Finally starting to use the FuelTech ECU to take control of my ignition!!! Why have I not done this up to now????? Testing at the track very soon to see how well the launch retard works off the transbrake! Check it ou.
As the owner of 2 FuelTechs, a 550 in a 2000 K24 Honda Insight and a 600 in a 97 Supra Turbo, I can tell you that I've burned my brain trying to configure them, since I can't find anything anywhere, beyond basic information, but the angle settings for the triggers is where it gets complicated. Tech support helped me with a few things and they are now working and I have both cars running. In the case of the Supra, configuring the automatic transmission control function can leave you in a bed in a mental asylum.
Much better Kev! It was just a bit distracting to listen to what you were saying with the background music at the volume level it was at. This is perfect! Thanks again for uploading this, I love any technical or tutorial based content.. even if it's something I already know or understand I enjoy listening to and watching how someone else does it. Thanks again Kev! Looking forward to the next upload 🤘🏼😁🤘🏼
Absolutely and it works great. Through that 1 wire it has controlled my MSD Digital 8 plus with zero issues. Shifting at 8100 RPMs. Checkout these latest runs from Darlington Dragway with this setup: ua-cam.com/video/PwXTr6po-fE/v-deo.html Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!
If you had a chance to do this all over, would you have started out with the FT 550? I’m guessing you will see yes. And buying a 12 - 1 hub. I am currently thinking about upgrading my 7AL-2 ignition system and going with Fuel tech FT 550. I am contemplating doing what you have done here and going with a 4 magnet damper and later on upgrading to a 12 -1. All these upgrades are expensive so I was thinking just to buy the FT 550 for now and start out with a 4 mag damper like you did and later on use it as a ignition system with a Coilovers plugs. What are your thoughts? Should I just buy the 12 - 1 damper now? Unfortunately, I do not have room for msd 4 mag trigger in between my damper and radiator, the cog for my pro charger is taking up a lot of space. I am at a crossroads where I either have to choose a 4 mag damper or a 12-1 damper. Do you know if there are any disadvantages with the four Mag wheel/hub/damper over the 12-1? Thank you, I appreciate your feedback and all your videos.
I would definitely go with the 12-1 and the FT-550! With the 12-1 you get much quicker feedback to the ECU and with FT and 12-1 you have a known home with the missing magnet. What that means is you only need the cam sync for starting, but once the motor is running the ECU will ignore the cam sync as it always will know where the missing magnet is in reference to TDC!!! The MSD and 4 magnets was easy to do as you can see from the video, but coil and plug is much, much better with 12-1!!! Go fast, go straight! Be Safe!
Awesome video. Do you by chance know if the ft450 is compatible with the 6al-2 box? I have a sbc crank trigger setup carb motor I’m wanting to converter to either ft450 or msd grid.
That’s a awesome video I don’t have fueltech mine is A Holly dominator and msd 600 but this is a great video I have thought about getting rid of all the Holly and going to all Fueltech but haven’t pulled the trigger on it yet.
Excellent video! Thanks for taking the time. I have a procharged sbc that I am installing Fueltech on this winter. I am going CNP with an MSD cam sync, but I will be continuing to use my flying magnet trigger with VR sensor so this video helps me out. Only question is, usually with any efi system you want the crank reference angle to be at least 10 degrees more than the max timing you would want to run. You set your crank reference angle at your max timing, has that been a problem at all? Also interested to see how the Fueltech does with the VR sensor... I know Holley hates it and you usually have to install the replacement hall effect sensor. Thanks again!
You know you make a great point! I need to research that more. It actually makes sense to have the CRA 10 or more degrees ahead to give the ECU a chance to do it's thing. I actually need to see how much more I can advance the VR sensor down on the bracket to give me more offset. Thanks for taking the time to comment! So far the FT is doing great with everything and the VR sensor. Go fast, go straight! Be Safe!
@@KevinWilsonSBC maybe it has more to do with CNP? I have a procharged E85 blow thru set up using an MSD programmable box. I had that set up with a distributor and crank trigger. I had it locked and set at my max timing 34 degrees, just like instructions said... didn't need the extra 10 degrees and it worked fine. Going to CNP cause I also drive the car on the street and the car would run better with more advance on the highway and I don't want to have to worry about phasing the distributor for a 25 degree sweep.
FuelTech recommends a 70* ref angle as specified their FT600/550/550LITE/450 Manual. I have set them anywhere from 50-70* but never have I set them less than the max ignition timing I plan to run. The rule of thumb is at least 10* more than your max ignition advance.
Before i got Micky Thompson drag radials on my blown destroked 454 to 427 with off the shelf forged LS6 pistons, puts comp ratio right at 7:1 and hitting it with 16 lbs @ locked out 30deg from Dyers 8/71 street Camaro, I tried using MSD timing retard with just a 6AL to lower power for initial take off and the motor just didnt like deg change, Think was pulling only 5deg and no ramp up,, But the tires fixed it, lol

You can control boost indirectly by controlling rpm. Enjoy next test session, there is lot to be gained in power management.
Great video! So the FT450 will control launch rev limit thru just the single points wire to the MSD box?

Curious how this works as I want to make the switch to . How do you wire the 2 step and the ignition coil ? I am wanting to keep my distributor
