Tim used that like a pocket knife! Light, comfortable, convenient. We enjoy Tim's commentary, he speaks with confidence and authority without being overbearing. Cheers to all.
I switched over to Stihl saw's some time ago. I used to be dealer for a few of the other popular brands but always looked longingly , at these and now that I am retired, I can see why folks buy Stihl. This is an enjoyable video,.Thanks.
I love my MS 170, 30cc with 16 inch bar. I've had it for two years. Great for liming and smaller jobs. Probably would say it's my favorite Sthil chainsaw. My MS 251C is a great bucking and firewood saw.
I got my 201 with a 14 inch bar. I can not imagine a homeowner buying this saw. They are very expensive here in Canada. Super saw though for professional use. Very happy with this little beast. You must keep up with air filter maintenance, seems to clog up quicker than most other professional saws. BUT, No where as bad as the dreaded 026.
I have been using the MS-193 for about a year now and love it for limbing and clearing out dead fall. Getting ready for the summer push here in Alaska. In America the MS-193 and 150 are available. Both smaller.
those are not really professional stihl saws though.. they are not made in germany (for one) and dont have cast engines but plastic ones.. but they work.. a ms170 will work also (bit short on power compared to a 201.
I have tried almost every brand of chainsaw and while I do like certain aspects about husqvarna and echo chainsaws the best part about the stihl chainsaws is parts availability and the dealer network in North America at least. Still dealers are almost like gas stations they are everywhere and it is extremely easy to get parts for them even 20-30 years after a product was produced. A few years back I fully restored a 028 wood boss and the stihl dealer was still able to get me the parts I needed to restore a chainsaw from the 80’s... I don’t use the 028 anymore but it’s nice to know it still runs like new if I ever need it. Also the price of stihl replacement parts are pretty fair compared to some other brands... usually a brand new carb for a stihl weed whacker or chainsaw is $20-40 and when I went to get a new carb for a echo weed wacker they wanted $80 for it at the echo dealer... So for those reasons I have decided to stick with stihl and stop testing other brands until they can catch up to stihl.
I've got the top handle version...only had it a week now but it's been great. Two loads of firewood and some cleanup...starts and runs good with decent power for the size. LOVE the top handle!
I went out and bought one of these today. Largely because of this video - had been looking for a lightweight saw for carrying with me and limbing etc. Tomorrow I will be taking it out for the first time and I’m really excited.
Oh boy, another episode of Swedish Chainsawing.Tim is amazing to watch. There's no wasted motion. If he ever gets bored with cutting up trees he could dance ballet.
I have 2 MS180. One is set up with 14" bar x .050" the other has an 18" 3/8" lpchain that has really surprised me. If you lean on saw it may bog, but for an all around small saw( my 80+ year old dad wanted light weight saw he could use around farm) it is pretty awesome. I noticed the extra bar length comes in handy when libing without bending over so much
Thats a great little saw, i have the 201t and love having the top handle. I havent modded mine as it does everything i want but maybe sometime down the line ill make it run even faster. I use this saw and my pole saw for the majority of stuff but will pull out my 310 for larger rounds. You can definitely tell the difference from the homeowner to the farmboss to the pro saws.
Stihl offers an *air fleece filter* to avoid dust ingestion with some woods. Good to assure a long lasting service. My father is 81 and still cutting wood with this chainsaw.
I don't hate Stihl, and I've owned several, but when it comes to air filtration, Husqvarna mops the floor with them. I mean the difference is almost laughable.
I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.
Been using ms200, ms201 and now ms201c-m (m-tronic version) for professional pre-commercial thinning the last 15 years There are no better tool for the job when you are lugging the saw along for up to 10hours days and cutting down 500-1000 trees during the day The m-tronic version was a great improvement, as I had a lot of struggle with the first 201. Especially in damp weather or snow Another thing to mention is that the saw looks fragile, but lasts me 2-3 years with heavy abuse and just regular maintenance I use a ms241 for traditional thinning and really feel the weight difference over the day even it looks small on paper, but it definitely got a bit more grunt for bigger diameter trees Great review guys!

Got 1 at work, i recommended it, in the past i was used to ms200t and basically i chopped respectul trees with it didnt feel like a pocket knife and it got the job done, due restrictions they took the top handles away from us and came with a cheap ass saw for homegarden use entry level, i missed the ms200t wich i used for years, the cheapers saws couldnt do the work like i did before they just lacked power, and im not a fan of there construction. Nowadays im working with the backhandle ms201c, it gets most of the work done and it can easily cut down trees twice the size of the bar, so basically its enough, if u do basic garden work on professional level
I am a chainsaw carver and run the rear handle MS200 and the MS201. The MS201 was/is, from the very first, a nightmare. It requires constant carb adjustments just to keep it running. This saw was around $1,000 CDN years ago, and I'd hoped it would have the power to run my toonie tip bar while having the wonderful balance and smoothness from the horizontal cylinder (the reason it looks different than most chainsaws). I no longer would consider running any of these heavy, rev limited "smog saws" (Husky 5__ series included) and now scour the internet searching for pre-xtorq Husky saws to use in my business. Perhaps the automatic carb on the 201C will help (until it malfunctions), but I'd put money on the MS200 cutting circles around it.
Hi you're back it was great to see you both, Simeon and Tim. Greetings from Michigan USA. I enjoyed watching your video even though being a 65 year old woman I don't really care for chainsaws but it was great seeing you guys. Can't wait for more videos have a great day, Bye.

Great video. Wow look at Tim go. Seems to be a very light saw and does great. My husband would've loved it. We cut so much firewood them years ago. Our old chainsaw never lasted long. Glad to see you both and the videos again. Thanks for sharing. May God bless you and your family always.
Thank you both, I used Eco and Husqvarna for a number of years. I was looking for a new saw, this looks right for the kind of seasonal work I am looking at doing.
as a WEST COAST man, I have no use for a 201. but, great video regardless! :-) Here is a saw shootout I just did today, Stihl361 vs the Holzfforma G444
In USA it's $710 for this saw and they have it listed under "farm and ranch." The ms-241 is listed as "pro" and sells for $540. Quite a difference here.
I would love to see a comparison of the Stihl MS261CM and the Husqvarna 550XP (especially after each of them has a few tanks of through them, since it can take a few tanks for the saw to "wake up" to its full power)
I own both. Got the 261 first. Did not think anything would match it. The 550 is a great saw. Switching back and forth between the saws. Here's what I notice. The 261 has more torque. This means once you get it into the wood the chain is easy to keep moving/cutting. I tend to not cut a lot of air when I cut. Running the 550 you need to stay on the throttle more and keep the revs up. Requires cutting more air. Less torque more speed. The chain is more likely to stop in the cut if you back off the throttle or put to much pressure on the bar. That is the biggest different for me. 55o has a primer bulb. Starts on the second pull. The cold 261 may take 10 or 12 pulls to start. Both saws are great saws. I just notice the differance because I switch from one to another. Hope this helps you out. I own the 201. I love this saw also. I have owned a o26 / 260 these are poor saws compared to the 261. Not worth owning if you are a professional cutter.
Stihl saws are AMONG the very best saws made. They have had problems with ATTITUDE as well as engineering. My grandfather used to say, Don't buy something newly developed. Wait until it is perfected. Wait till the bugs are worked out. I am not bothered by a saw that looks odd. As long as it is strong and reliable. Did you say this saw comes in a top handle model? I would like to see it. And does it have a strong rope ring on the back for climbing arborists? Thank you for the demonstration. And the good narration.
I still use my 1974 Poulan S25DA for cutting firewood, 38cc and 8.5lb powerhead with 1/4 pitch chain. Actually my go-to saw, I use it for some rather large projects from start to finish. Of course I have larger saws for the really big stuff beyond 16 inches, my Poulan 306A (59cc) cuts like mad but it's 12-3/4lb, too heavy for me using all day.
I like the longer pole limb saw for low trimming because I don’t need to bend over. I own the Echo system and it’s just as good as Stihl’s. I have the older PAS260 system with all the toys. I couldn’t run a farm without it and I’m a little old man (72 yrs) and I can handle it.
I own this saw but mine is a MC T which has a auto timing system. It’s a nice saw except for the very well known oiler issues. The first thing you need to do is turn the oiler all the way up as far as it will go. If you buy one, you will frequently have to take it apart to clear the oiler entire system, as it easily clogs unlike other Stihl saws. It’s a pain to deal with.
I use one of these 201s trimming trees every day. The power is nice and it gets the job done. BUT after a few weeks, the damn thing won’t stay running. Changing the plug helps for an hour or 2 but it still needs restarted constantly.
I like Tim. I dont know what you pay for big macs and Starbucks but that wont get you a stihl saw. I ran one or those at work and it is light but gutless. The husky 440 is a close second. If you dont push on them they cut but if you do they bog
Great review. I think that the first 201's without m-tronic came to the market about 5-6 years ago. The m-tronic version is superior compared to that. Thanks.
I am a pro saw carver and right from the purchase this saw was junk. The carburetor is worthless and it was in the shop for 6 weeks and they couldn't fix it or get parts from Stihl Midwest. I finally called them and asked for my money back and they finally sent another carburetor, but upon installation it didn't work either. I will never buy a pro saw from Stihl again, and I am actively campaigning against them for making trash. The MS 200 was a great saw, they now have ruined it.
If anything this is just as traditional as the upright cylinder design. Many older saws including Stihl units had a horizontal cylinder. Lovely little saw though. Interesting that they went for a clutch -outwards design like a Husky, it brings the bar in a little bit which I guess is important in a very small saw.
What are your animals doing while you are working in the woods and reviewing? How are they progressing through the winter? Good to see you back. We’ve missed you.
ya know i had a landscaping bs. i bought a echo chain saw small one it was so lite n plenty of power n cheap AF also and i ran the hell outta it id def recomend it!!
Still, the old MS200 is more popular here in Finland. I'm not saying the 201 is bad, just that most professional people here think the predecessor was a bit better.
I dont know how the prices are where you guys live, but out in the states, the MS 201CE-M costs about $730, which is more than both the MS 241C-M and MS 261C-M. I think it was only about $50 cheaper than a MS 362C-M (both 16" bars). Also, that saw is listed as a farm and ranch saw.
This is a good saw. The old 200T skipped great and went straight to legendary as you said. If you have experience with both, you'll easily tell the difference. It's a shame that the 200T saws are hard to get now, unless you get a knockoff clone. I don't have any experience with this back handle version, but I have plenty of years with the top handle of both and the 200 is leaps and bounds better in almost every way in terms of performance.
It is funny how Husqvarna dealer once say that it is very lucky for Husqvarna how bad 201c first models come out, because they had no change compete with 200.
Tim used that like a pocket knife! Light, comfortable, convenient. We enjoy Tim's commentary, he speaks with confidence and authority without being overbearing. Cheers to all.

I ran one or those at work and it is light but gutless. The husky 440 is a close second. If you dont push on them they cut but if you do they bog
The old mc culloch chainsaw number 1. .Stihl 090, 066 number 2. 3 rd Husqvarna 390 west coast modded. non epa with motul 800 35:1.
what a gr8 review boys your videos just get better and better all the time , from Manitoba Canada
I sure enjoy the videos you all put out. Keep up the good work and good web site. I dream with every video. This Old Dawg Is Dreaming
Good for bucket truck use. I prefer a ms201t but that rear handel provides less fatigue on bunk shoulders.
Great to see both you guys, fantastic, honest review. I hope you gain your own saw soon. Regards, Tony from England.
Great review. I think that the first 201's without m-tronic came to the market about 5-6 years ago. The m-tronic version is superior compared to that. Thanks.
Increadible!!!!
Thank you so much for this kind of practical video
These Stihl pro lightweight saws are great. Kinda expensive, but since you do more limbing, this will not wear you out
I am a pro saw carver and right from the purchase this saw was junk.
Thank you guys for that honest and very informative review.
Love the chainsaw videos! Always very informative.
Annette Anderson I love them tooo
Great video! I'm sharing it on my Facebook timeline with all my woodcutting friends here in the Pacific Northwest...thanks!

Great review. Thanks very much. You have a lovely family.
Thanks for review found it very illuminating
Hello Tim...thank you for your video, it was very helpful...
Say hello to your Family....
I do a lot of climbing and this looks like a good limbimg saw.
What are your animals doing while you are working in the woods and reviewing? How are they progressing through the winter? Good to see you back. We’ve missed you.
Great for bushcraft ☺
Love this saw for pruning
ya know i had a landscaping bs. i bought a echo chain saw small one it was so lite n plenty of power n cheap AF also and i ran the hell outta it id def recomend it!!
glad your back
Still, the old MS200 is more popular here in Finland. I'm not saying the 201 is bad, just that most professional people here think the predecessor was a bit better.
I am definitely a stihl guy. Have the ms251 not to heavy but just enough power. I would maybe upgrade to ms261 someday anyway thanks for the vid.
I like to know your opinion on the stihl 261 c-m. Thank you
I dont know how the prices are where you guys live, but out in the states, the MS 201CE-M costs about $730, which is more than both the MS 241C-M and MS 261C-M. I think it was only about $50 cheaper than a MS 362C-M (both 16" bars). Also, that saw is listed as a farm and ranch saw.
Hur långt är svärdet på husqvarna sågen?
This is a good saw. The old 200T skipped great and went straight to legendary as you said. If you have experience with both, you'll easily tell the difference. It's a shame that the 200T saws are hard to get now, unless you get a knockoff clone. I don't have any experience with this back handle version, but I have plenty of years with the top handle of both and the 200 is leaps and bounds better in almost every way in terms of performance.
It is funny how Husqvarna dealer once say that it is very lucky for Husqvarna how bad 201c first models come out, because they had no change compete with 200.
