Actually, many bands have lead singers with glasses just like that today. Being a "nerd" or even looking like a "nerd" is actually a cool thing these days. Buddy Holly made that possible.

Shortly after they were returned to his widow, Rolling Stone displayed them on a full page, inside back cover photo with his birth and death dates.
It remains one of the most impactful rock photos I've ever seen - the realization that his wife recieved them in the mail 20+ years after the crash.

Kinda spooky the glasses were found the same year John Lennon was killed. A sad, early death just like his hero Buddy. The other items found in the envelope were a watch, cigarette lighter and pair of dice owned by the Big Bopper, which were returned to his son.

I reckon McCartney, Hank Marvin or Keith Richard would have paid much more than $80,000 for those glasses considering their iconic importance and the fact that he was wearing this particular pair that night.
A one off piece of music history.

The story didn't say SHE received 80 grand for the glasses. She sold them to some other party for an undisclosed sum. The other party sold the glasses to the Buddy Holly museum. THEY are the ones who received the 80 grand. At least the glasses are now in a safe place where EVERYONE can see them. If she had kept them and after she passed away who knows what would have happened to them. Strange things happen at estate sales. "things" have a way of "disappearing".

Buddy Holly 1st Rock and Roll performer to wear glasses on stage. Others would wear glasses on stage because it was Well Alright... to wear them on stage. Many individuals that weren't performers would wear Buddy Holly Glasses. In the movie "Batman vs Superman" Henry Cavill looked more like Buddy Holly than Clark Kent. Even Buddy Holly would influence what type of glasses Clark Kent would wear. Those type of glasses are still popular till this day. Buddy Holly was cool.

Apparently, Holly and his gang were flying in Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, if we're to believe the plane seen in this video! Those glasses held up fairly well when you consider the horrendous trauma Holly and the 2 thrown from the plane sustained. Crushed chest, large lacerations, multiple fractures of arms & legs, skull fracture and brain mostly removed by the impact is a very violent set of injuries.

Now we have to listen to the shit we are brainwashed with today. So sorry Buddy that our music industry has failed you. R.I.P Charles Hardin (Buddy) Holly

For the record, the Big Bopper's body was thrown out of the plane on the first contact of the wing , the plane then cartwheeled some 150 feet, finally hitting a fence, where it rested and the bodies of Buddy and Richie Valens were expelled, the body of pilot Roger Peterson, was stuck inside of the mangled remnants, of the plane.

20-800 vision means you have to be 20 feet away to see
things people with normal eyes can see at 800 feet away.
Apparently Buddy Holly was close to being legally blind,
so the lenses in those famous specs had to have been
as thick as the glass in the bottom of a Coke bottle.

He lost those around the summer of 1958. There was a period where he was only wearing his sunglasses because that was all he had. He started using the Faosa pair around the fall of 1958.

Yeah, you’re right... 80 Thousand dollars is an awful lot to give a widow who had to live her entire adult life without her beloved husband... Who might have been fucked out of royalties by unscrupulous record label executives... Her heart was broken forever on that day and no amount monetary remuneration would make up for that... Not 80 thousand nor 80 million...
