This guy is singularly amazing. Perfect phrasing, and so fluid. Most pianists show some fatigue by the time they get to this movement and rifle right through it. You hear absolutely every note in the runs in the right hand with him. Unbelievable. Dynamics are right on and it's not overly dramatic. Can't say enough good things. One of my favorite pieces, wish I could play it, and I think I've just found my favorite performer of it.
All of this is true, this is a great performance. I also suggest checking Alexei Sultanov's performance of it, which I think is the most energetic and lyric interpretation of all
Agree with you...this is a VERY worthy rendition. But i still can't get over the Lipatti recording of the early '50s... THAT is pure magic, almost otherworldly.
The best winner in Chopin's competition history. In all the competitions, no one has shown such an overwhelming performance as Blechacz. At that time, he was a world-class pianist. This performance will go down in history.
I don't think so, you forgot Alex Sultanov even if he wasn't a winner because of the controversial Doble first prize, I feel he was one of the best ever winners of this competition!
What a lucky guy! This Presto movement blew my mind first time I heard it. And I love it more and more every time I hear it. But holy crap is it hard to learn! Massive props to this pianist.
From 3:30 though, jesus H christ he plays that with some passion, almost too much its astonishing well played, the tension he creates is transcendental.
Indeed, not to mention to be able to do so in such an intense atmosphere such as the Chopin Competition of all places. Unbelievable performance by an artist who I am sure we will come to cherish as he continues to make music throughout his life :)
Mark Fowler, at 3:30, is it a real passion? I am not so sure about that. There are so many pianists playing the same way right there, they’re going down at pace. They play slower, not because of passion, but because of the technically demanding left hand. Note that Rafal Blechacz also increases the pace again at 4:03, because then the demanding part is over… I prefer a somewhat slower tempo from the beginning, so that the pianists are able to keep the same pace all the way.
@@geiryvindeskeland7208 yes it's very impassioned, note the rubato he uses, it's very powerful, he deliberately holds notes longer to create dramatic tension, if you can't hear the any of this then that's your issue not mine.

One the most extraordinary performances I've ever heard of this masterpiece, and I've listened to innumerable performances in the last 50 years and have performed it myself. He's phenomenal!
При таком опыте прослушиваний трудно что-то советовать, но все же хочу отметить, что эта соната очень хороша у Алексея Султанова. Его выступление с ней на 3 туре конкурса Шопена 1995 запоминается на всю жизнь.
This piece almost sounds like Chopin decided he wanted to write a piece that only he could play. To me, the last movement sounds like 2 pianists. Could he have fit any more notes? How anything can be that busy and yet remain so aesthetically pleasing is a testimony to Chopin's genius. This is a really good performance of this piece- one of the best I've heard.
Remember this is the 4th movement of this sonata and certainly the most demanding of the others. I can't speak for any other pianists but I know I would be EXHAUSTED by the time I got to the last movement of this sonata. He did not omit a single note, phrasing and clarity, strength and most importantly musicality through the roof in this interpretation. Absolutely amazing!
I believe this will be, for much longer than my lifetime, the essential primer for virtuoistic performance of this piece of music. Period. Flawless, perfect, and beyond perfect. He adds not the music to himself (virtuoso). He adds himself to the music. Bravo!
Almost. He studied with Chopin standing at his side. Spirit teachers are not all that uncommon. I've had a couple of lessons from Debussy and Fats Waller... and a couple of others. It's not that I play all that well; it's just that I'm psychic. Fun... when you can make contact.
3:30 - I can hear something emerging from a depth. This moment is simply stunning; just feel that blow in 3:37. I've never heard anybody playing this moment in this part of Finale like that. Bravo!
Dear friend ... You just made mention of one of the key points of this brilliant and unparalleled interpretation ... in those seconds the music sounds much more than simply repeat the partiture ... emerges feeling, understanding, energy and mystical !!
Simply spectacular. I held my breath but the Inevitable lag in rhythms that occurs towards the end never appeared. There are so many great pianists who have performed this one and I seem to find (in my own amateurish way) something slightly "off" about most of them, the main culprit being speed, choppiness and phrasing. Blechacz keeps the tempo under control, maintains the syncopation and excels in long phrases. One of the few modern performers who match both style and virtuosity is the great Yuja Wang who remarked that this was one of the hardest Chopin ever wrote from both a performance and a theoretical viewpoint. You know a pianist is great when you don't notice any technical problems.
The quintessential recording. Phrasing, balance of voices, structure, rhythmic drive, diversity of touch. All facets of his musical ability are in full employment in this interpretation of the entire sonata. He undoubtably deserved the gold medal that he received.
