  • Park Delta Bay advertises as “the only legal Tiny House community in Northern California”. There are now 10 tiny homes on wheels parked here - among 65 long-term residents - on this former KOA campground that now offers RV parking and cabin rentals.
    To park your tiny house here, it has to be built according to RV certifications and registered as an RV. We visited four tiny homes.
    Ken & Jessie: After living in containerized housing while enlisted together in the military together, they decided to leave their $2000-per-month home in Suisun City and move into a tiny house (there’s was built by Tiny Mountain Houses). • RV park as NorCal’s fi...
    Sarah & Josh: With the only skoolie on the lot, Sarah and Josh moved from North Carolina, originally looking in the Bay Area, but discouraged by $1400-per-month parking fees they moved in here where things are “slower” and they like that. • RV park as NorCal’s fi...
    Corinne Corley: One of the longest residents here, Corinne moved from Kansas City to be closer to Stanford Hospital where she’s being treated for a rare condition. Her home is “accessible” for her: it has stairs that with a longer rise so she can walk up them. • RV park as NorCal’s fi...
    Melanie: A widow who built her own home - including plumbing, electric and elevator bed - and moved to California to be near her daughters. • RV park as NorCal’s fi...

      Except that $650 per month to live in RV camps is still too much for a lot of folks. That’s nearly half or more of some people’s retirement income. When did RV camps get that pricey?

    Compared to tract homes or neighborhoods with restrictions on everything from backyard sheds, green house structures and landscaping features to fences and walls between properties these tiny homes are both beautifully unique and inspirational in their designs and individual quirks. And many are quite simply genius in their design concept and actual implementation and fruition of ideas ! I applaud all of you on your bravery, execution and impact.

They reduce waste, are generally more efficient, make it easier to use recycled/reclaimed materials that would otherwise go to landfills, promote more minimal lifestyles that prioritize living over possessions, helps promote community living where resources can be shared and there's less need for redundancies, it gives people more control over what kind of home they have so it can more efficiently meet their needs and reduce the one size fits all wastefulness of most modern homes, they can be more easily be re-purposed, and the list goes on...

    Love how creative folks are in designing their tiny homes. Helps solve the problems of the housing shortage in many communities. That said, the area of this tiny home community is precarious as well as dangerous. I lived in Sacramento all my life. The berms (levies) seperating the rivers from the trailer communities is a failing system and has been for many, many years. I wouldn't want to see them loose their homes because the state isn't and never will fix them. Those areas have been flooded so many times it not funny any more. There needs to be more options for Tiny homes. Options that are safe. Great Video Kirsten!

    The pulley anxiety can be easily solved by moving the pulley closest to the crank out of the way of the bed (so, "outwards"). Just screw it 10-15 cm towards the living room. The bed would still be lifted straight up but the hook would not get in the way of the bed any longer. She has built such a great bed, please lady, I want you to enjoy it to the fullest!

    I'm a construction expert and now a full time RV-er. One problem I see with almost all tiny houses is the trailer is under capacity for the weight that is built onto it. The other things I see is most of them are fire taps. One can be built ultra light with fire rating but nobody seems to to do it that way, they go all cosmetics and less real world bullet proofing. Few are air and water tight to my satisfaction.

    • @CORYJOHNM

    • @martigreene500
      @martigreene500 5 років тому +7

      I've been researching Tiny Homes for months, and too often the owners trade safety for comfort. A reinforced custom triple or quad axle trailer is expensive and definitely not the norm. If I set on exactly where I wanted to live, I'd build a really small house because the thought of a fire in a Tiny Home scares the crap out of me. Another problem is all TH builders don't incorporate appropriate air exchange to avoid mold. So I'll research until I find a builder I'm confident will avoid all these issues plus a few more. I'm jealous of RV-ers like yourself but I'm a 50 year old chicken shit. Haha Maybe one of these days...

    • @rachelthompson9324
      @rachelthompson9324 5 років тому +6

      @@martigreene500 any builder that has commercial and residential knowledge should be about to design and build a unit that is lighter, better insulated, fire resistant and with proper air exchanging properties for mold prevention. I'd use an equipment trailer to start with, the type I used to haul track hoe and back hoes with. I've remolded a number of RV's and know their house systems well so I would incorporate the best of three worlds, commercial, residential and RV construction tech and house systems. Design it for how and where you intend to use it is step one. For example, in FL ten foot wide can travel on most roads without escort, 12 foot with banners is legal, and 14 with escort, so in FL there is no reason to build one 8 foot wide. Know the local codes and hauling rules before you build. Done right, the build can be way less costly and more efficient than typical TH builds.

    People who take the leap of faith and build their own housing should be proud! However, some of the Tiny Homes built by amateurs would scare me to live in! Building cheaply often sacrifices safety (fire risk mainly) and/or ignores health concerns like mold from inadequate ventilation and air exchange. I've been seriously considering a Tiny Home due to chronic illness and pain (I'm also a Disabled Vet) and so far I'm disappointed in the sub-par quality I've seen. Although privately built homes often have the uniqueness and character I desire, I don't want to sacrifice quality. The other issue is the damaged Orvile Dam, it breaks, it's all under water! Life has its risks when you live in California...fires, earthquakes, flooding just take it if one day at a time, no guarantees in life. It's a beautiful place.

    Nice Video, inspiring!! I'm a native Californian from the Bay Area but now live mostly in Georgia just south of Atlanta. We have an MH and RV Park community here with fishing ponds, community garden and so on. We have Tiny Homes and Shipping containers too. And the park is building a purpose built Tiny Living Community on the adjacent 10 acres next door. (City approved..) Lot rent is WAAAAAY less expensive out here, lol, currently $445.00 including utilities, amenities, etc. So as an option if someone is in the south east this park is a viable option.

      Mr. H it’s super reasonable considering the rising cost of living in Sacramento. Which is my home town. I left and went over the road trucking with my hubby 5 years ago. We’ve watched this town go nuts on rent because people are moving from the Bay Area and paying cash for houses. It’s becoming the new, old Bay Area

      I don't know if Sac is called that, but all the way up to Vacaville is. I know where Suisun is. It's on the other side of Fairfield. Rents went up so much all around those areas. I'll stick to N.C. One of the mobile home parks outside of town also takes rv's or tiny homes. But being on well water they can only have so many "homes" on the water system, so some of the spots have to be "dry camping".

      That you have hustle in your name says it all. *smile* What it is, is learning to slow down and accept the differences in peoples' space, and learn to turn a blind eye to what you don't like - it's just good manners, as long as it's not a health hazard. And that's CA, they have very high health standards.

    My experience is when you live in a beautiful home, you get a LOT of attention. So big windows are lovely, but it’s a privacy tradeoff.

    • @cynhanrahan4012

      I thought so too, when I saw that. And the no storage part. Lots of smaller windows, like the young veteran couple with those really nice black out shades/blinds in their bed area, still had all the light and a lot more privacy.

    Rigid Copper soldered tubing does not work well in mobile situations because the joints break loose. Pex pipe is good.

    It's a great idea.. we saw this video and went see the place, planning to move there. It was not what we expected at all. The property is very run down. They don't allow rvs over 10 years yet had old tons of abandoned rvs and vehicles on the property. The quarters are very close and for me this defeats the purpose of tiny living. If I'm living in a small house I at least want to feel like I have more space outside, but here they are so packed together you can barely set up a couple of chairs outside. There is only one long road through the delta and over islands to get to the place and it seems very unsafe and a little trashy. It is very unfortunate that this is what the people of CA have to deal with in regards to living. You make the best of what you have got but personally I would rather pay the same or a little more to live in an apartment in town. I prefer country living, but this is not country living, it's trashy. I'm not saying these people in the video are trashy, but take a drive down to check out the place and you will see what I mean. Absolutely disappointed because we really wanted to live like this.

I like video games and watching tons of movies so I need fast speeds.
