This video series features the complete restoration of a 1972 CL350 Honda Scrambler motorcycle. The videos should help anyone whether working on a cafe racer build or a full-on original restoration. I'm definitely not an expert so please refer to your manuals for proper disassembly and assembly instructions. Please leave comments if you have any questions. I'll be happy to help answer questions if I can confidently provide solutions. Again, I'm not a professional. This is my 2nd Honda motorcycle restoration and I'm learning every single day. I'd love to hear your tips if you have better ways to do things. I hope you find the series useful and entertaining. I strive to show as much detail as possible so that the videos can be used as not only a how-to resource but also a reference for the placement and original set up of parts and systems.
If you don't have one already please get a manual for your specific project. There are many available online for download for free.
Common Motor Collective, from which I source many of my replacement parts, has a fantastic resource on their website: bit.ly/CBManuals
You can also join groups on Facebook and get involved in the community.
    Keep on wrenching, Friends!

You are a lifesaver....had stuttering, fuel starvation, symptoms....had replaced the gasket during rebuild....never realised how the gasket should have been installed! Super valuable video!!

Great to hear. This video is the hard way. The next video in the series features the easy way. Please be sure to check that one out. It’s WAY better. Thanks for watching!

Trying to restore my original locking gas cap on my '89 Honda fl400 Pilot. I have a new cap with gasket identical to the original and, after watching this, I'm ready to take a leap of faith and pry the old one out. Thanks for the "push".

Easy way isn’t the best way. I should actually remove the easy way video.

If you don't need the sharp point, just use a small screwdriver. Thanks for the videos.

You don’t need to do that. There are caps that pop off, and there are others that have screws that you can take off. Clearly, this one can be pried off from underneath where the gasket sits.

There’s actually a little metal star shaped bracket that pops off. It’s a bit of a puzzlement.

Thanks for sharing installation technique, speaking of vintage Honda gas caps, can they go bad in terms of letting raw fuel come trough that little opening at the bottom of the cap? Say you replaced the seal but the fuel may still come out trough the little opening, I think the opening is there to allow gas to vent in case pressure build up.

There is an easier way. It’s in the follow up video.

    • @KeepOnWrenching
      @KeepOnWrenching  3 роки тому

That vent needs to be clear for sure. I prop it open or compressed and let it run through the ultrasonic a few times. Seems to clear it out.

I think I remember that middle springed area slides completely out. tight fit but not attached.

I’ll have to check that out. Wasn’t aware it came apart further. Some caps have a screw in the middle. Others appear to be just a river of some sort. Thanks for the info. I’ll look into it.

@@KeepOnWrenching I tried your method, Brian, and I think I spent two hours working up a sweat and letting some four letter words fly. Never could get the damn thing on. I found a post in a forum that mentioned removing the entire inner piece. You can see along the cap on the inside edges some triangular metal pieces. From memory, I want to say there was four, but it might have been three. Pry one up a little with a flat head screw driver and work another one up some and eventually the whole mechanism pops out. Placing the seal on then is a breeze. Getting it back in the cap wasn't difficult. At least not on mine.

The profile of the gasket is unequal. The thicker section wants to be on top (sits against the tank)

Hi there. Just had your vid linked to in a comment on my experience trying to change this seal/cap. I then discovered you can remove the central section completely, making seal replacement very, very, very easy. Here is a link to my next vid showing that discovery and the easy way to replace this seal.
