*Alright... let's get the Dusty Dodge back on the road.* This will probably happen to you at some point. Hope it doesn't... but when it does, at least you'll be prepared.
2016 RAM 1500. Replaced battery like a dummy$150. Watched this video and will be heading to NAPA for OEM starter. Thanks for this video!! I have 14'2x 14, 3" track overhead door to install today AFTER starter!!!
My 2019 Durango srt just went out and if you can imagine the wheel well is completely closed off by felt. Underneath is my best option so much heat shielding ugh 😂 wish me luck
RAM’s are not Dodges since 2009. No where on that 2019 RAM will you find anything marked as Dodge. Separate companies, separate plants, separate engineers, completely different company.
Thank you very much for posting this video. I actually just had the same exact issue on my 2022 Ram just yesterday! After two hours of troubleshooting I went to the auto parts store and bought a starter and started removing the old starter and when I got to the 13mm nut located on the starter solenoid that’s located on the starter, it was extremely loose. I was able to remove the nut by hand with no tools needed. At that point, I tightened everything back up, connected the battery terminals, and the truck started right away. I was able to return the new starter to the auto parts store. Have not had any issues all day today. I don’t know why this isn’t a recall as the 13mm nut WAS the issue! Thanks again, man!
Thanks brother I have a 22 Laramie with the 5.7 I replaced the battery in January thinking it was that everything was cool till yesterday I have 48300 on it and it happened again! Thanks for the tip I am going to have that checked out!
Same issue I had. Mine also turned out to be a loose nut on the power cable to starter lug. Tightened and good to go. Saved few hundred on an unneeded starter.
Hey little tip! It wasnt probably the actual starter…that little wire with the clip that goes to starter was probably corroded. Its dumb how Chrysler does it. But that wire reads the volts and tells the pcm if it has the volts to start. When you replaced the starter, you just agitated it. You should try to run a “pigtail” from that wire straight to the battery and see if it works.
I had this same issue when my 2019 Ram was under warranty, but the dealer put in a battery which took care of this problem for 1 years, now I'm going through the same thing again.
Great video and informative! Two thoughts I have. - 1. Get rid of 12 point sockets and replace them with 6 point! Those 12 point sockets have rounded a lot of tight bolt heads. And - 2. I still wonder if it was your starter OR that loose bolt that connected the cable! Either way, it’s new now and great job fixing it!! Keep those wheels rollin! I’m watching for the next vid! Thanks!
I’ve got a mix of 6 and 12 point. But I try to keep 3 sets of the “essential” tools. At the house, at the land, and in the truck. So it is usually a crap shoot what I’m going to have for a repair. Haha. And it’s possible that it was just a loose wire… but at that point I wasn’t willing to take the risk and potentially end up stranded somewhere. I feel good about it being new. Thanks for the comment as always!
Fixed!!! You gave me the right path. 2021 no start, could jump. What I found then battery. I replaced battery and no issue for about a month or so. Then it started again, guess new wore off the battery and extra umph was gone. Well after video and comments I removed the starter, same thing power cable was hand tight. Had it tested at autozone and starter good. Put bsck on with some dielectric grease on all connections and tightened with 1/4" rachet and mid length socket. Was terrible to get to and get starter out. Had about 10 successful starts since. So thank you for video and from the comments. From the factory under torqued. 1st exact issue i found documented.
My 19 Ram is experiencing this problem now. Have to wait a week for service but glad I have this info to pass to dealership. Extended warranty expires in December, phew!
Had this on my 19 Laramie. What fixed it for me was cleaning the corrosion off of the starter wire and tightening the 13mm bolt at the front of the starter. I bought a new battery just to be safe as well. My check engine cleared itself and has been consistently starting weeks later.
Exactly same thing is happening to my 21' Ram 1500 with 41K. My mechanic seems to think it is the same thing, starter issue. Battery is slightly low on voltage, but enough to cause this issue. Thank you for taking the time to create this content to help us out, maybe RAM will do something about it...dont think so...
This is crazy! The EXACT same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago. 197K miles, has run like a top. I was 4 hours from home, stopped to get gas and snacks. Get ready to go.....and click. The tow truck came in about an hour. He messed with the battery cables, and it turned right over. 2 days ago, Im headed out of town for work, and "CLICK". It was the starter. All things considered, it was a "pain free" issue. Im currently shopping for a 2500. I just want a step up in size and towing capability
If you couldn't even check the battery cables what makes u think another bigger truck is right for u ? 😂 why don't u learn the truck first big boy and you might save yourself some money
Hello Mr. Wheeler. I have a 2021 Laramie and same thing happened to me. Truck has 55k and was driving me crazy. Went to change the starter and the bolt on the power for the starter was just hand tightened. Just tightened it up to see if it was just a loose connecion and i am going on 3 weeks of no problem. Fingers crossed that i dont need a new starter but for the meantime no issues.
I am having the same issue right now, I’m wondering if it has something to do with the cold weather, cause mine only does it when it’s cold in the morning 2019 27k miles and already doing the exact same thing, let me know if yours has done it again?
I have a 2019 Limited as well love it do wish I got the panoramic moon roof though. Bought it a little over 3 years ago she has 36k on it. Love the videos for any future issues I might have 💪🏼
Not only did I have the exact same problem….i saw exactly what I wanted to see down there as well on my driver side. I just tightened and buffed the connectors. They were loose. Thanks for the help!
I had a similar starting problem. It ended up be a blow bulb on the 3rd brake light. Giving a faulty code to the PCM and not letting it start. So check the brake light, simple fix before crawling under for the starter.
I knew exactly what the problem was😂. Mine is a 2021 Bighorn. I thought it was my battery, so I dropped a new one in it. Turns out, it wasn’t my battery. My battery was actually still good. I replaced it any ways🤷🏽♂️. It was my starter the whole time🤦🏽♂️. Got that fixed. She started up just fine 👌🏽. I have a 6” lift on my truck, which made it easy to get to mine. This was about a month ago. Great video👌🏽.
The nut to the starter is a bolt on the starter. No reason to remove. Just remove the heat shield cover. Reach around to the start of the starter. You should feel the nut move freely. Tighten it down and the issue will go away. Had it happen on my 2019 and this fixed the issue.
1) fix that boot before the next rain storm. Our last rental car had a bad boot and within 10 miles of wet road we had a failed wheel bearing. 2) our 1999 Ram would have battery ground terminal issues every 5-7 years that gave the same symptoms you describe. Sandpaper on the terminal and cable end helped for a while, new cable end fixed it for a few years, but it was a recurring problem that always could be fixed by reseating the battery connection.
keep us posted on this please :) I have the same issue and apparently so do a handful of people online. it is a weird issue, the intermittent-ness of it makes it a challenge to track down and these new trucks have so much electronics going on it can be pretty hard to trace stuff. I can confirm its not the battery, its not corrosion on terminals. Things it could still be: Component drawing power on occasion (but not always) and draining the battery, start solenoid (which I am increasingly thinking it might be after seeing this), bad wires (seems unlikely but possible), bad ground, bad break depression switch maybe, bad parking sensor maybe,... idk. Like I said, vehicles are becoming so complicated it can be a pain to troubleshoot.
Not a mechanic just mess with my vehicle till I get to a major issue. Looking into the Rams now but I have run into similar issues with push button systems in a Toyota. The light on the start button would stay red when you press the brake pedal. So I would give it a couple of presses until it turns green indicating its good to start. I wonder if the brake pressure switch has a double contact or something. To where if it doesn't have good voltage it doesn't allow a start? This literally happened to me a few weeks ago and I am waiting to see if it happens again. 2021 Toyota.
@@glenmyrick1359 3Months later and I am back in these comments lol, my truck still has this issue but very intermittent as mentioned. I have wondered lately if it is the brake depression sensing like you are saying too, because I have found if I keep trying to turn it on, while also pressing and depressing the brake each time, it often will eventually start up. This to me seems like a brake sensing issue based on this characteristic. Also, Didnt mention in my comment that when it truely wont start, I hook up my jumper pack and it will start no problem. so so odd. so increasing current fixes the issue, new battery does not fix the issue, repeatedly trying to start fixes the issue sometimes, and the issue only happens extremely randomly and not consistently due to any external weather or anything as far as I have noticed. So... still leaning towards the starter motor solenoid sticking I guess which would make sense for all the issues and fixes, (assuming overdriving current unsticks it). Or some kind of weirdness going on the the brake depression sensing
@@BenJaminLongTime UGH! What a nightmare. Currently my 2020 Ram 1500 Rebel crew cab is sitting in my driveway and won't start. I ruled out the battery being the issue as I even tried a new one. I was going to try a new starter, but not thrilled to see 3 months later you're having the same problem (and you bought the expensive starter, not a cheapo). I'm going to attempt to check my starter with a multimeter this evening...
My 21 limited 15k miles didn’t start,no lights, even remote control, nothing, drain battery out,so I recharge battery full,as soon as it start ,i took to dealer, found out there were two bad fuses,$10 for 2 fuses and $70 labor,
Exact problem I'm dealing with on my 2017 rebel. Battery, alternator, both fine. Turns right over if I jump it off. Didn't want to replace a starter but glad to know it's not just mine having this problem. Appreciate the video
Another great video thanks for the time man, I actually just bought a 2019 Ram sport 1500 so I love watching your videos and stuff just to get an idea of what I'm going to have to deal with in 100,000 miles
i got my 2021 ram 1500 brand new with only 4 miles. now she is 23k and counting no problems at all. so far i have just replaced the battery it only lasted me 1 years. so far i love my ram
Thanks for the video. I have 22 1500 5.7 gas. Same thing, I thought it was the battery. New battery solved it for a very short period then the dreaded click. I have 40k miles on it and bought it used last spring. I replaced the starter myself and was happy to have your video to refer to. I had to use a torch to heat up the starter to get the bolts loose. Not sure what torque spec they used, but dissimilar metals can be a real pain. Thanks again ! BTW the nut on cable ( 13mm ) was tight. Old starter motor appeared to be bound up tight .
This happened to my 2019 Ram a week ago. I too thought it was the battery since it's coming up on two years of age. After it happened the second time, It had me thinking, maybe it's the alternator. What I wound up doing both times is actually pushing the start button with the Key Fob instead of my finger. Lo and behold, it started right up! I don't know why it worked but, it does. And, after doing a little research on UA-cam I found out that's what some other Ram owners did as well. I'm not going to discount replacing the alternator. But, I'm hoping I won't need to.
First thing I noticed was the wear on the cheap undercarriage shielding by the starter... you do a lot of off roading, between the dirt and stuff hitting your undercarriage. I bet your connection to the starter was either loose or dirty; which explains the starter working on and off. It doesn't take much resistance on a 12v circuit to cause issues!
Its the wire and connector that goes to the solenoid on the starter. Its happened to me twice. Im on my second starter and I still needed to climb under and jiggle the terminal. Its super loose. Finally had to crimp on a new terminal and no more problems.
I actually got rid of mine last month I couldn’t keep pouring money into it all the repairs I had to do and stuff still was breaking down on it. I had 170 K on it when I got rid of it I went through three radiators, three water pumps, two starters, four batteries, exhaust manifold, bolts were broken still did not get those fixed and the rear sliding window kept leaking. I’m going to keep following your channel and to see how you do because I know you got more miles than I did on mine but it’s just sad that they don’t make nothing last anymore, and I took care of my vehicle just like you take care of yours.
I have a 2022 power wagon w 65000 miles. Same problem as yours. I changed the battery before I saw your video and like you, decided, change starter. As I was starting to do that I noticed the battery cable on the starter wasn’t very tight. I tightened it and my starter sounds better than it has in a LONG time. Loose battery Cable on starter
I have a 2019 rebel and my starter just quit at 110k miles, not even 2 weeks ago. No warning, just wouldn’t start even with a jump. I thought my battery was bad as well but had it tested and it was fine. I laughed at the part in your video where you show all the extensions and the swivel head ratchet because I did the same exact set up when I replaced my starter 😂
Thank God! I thought about the starter ten times but dismissed because the alternator was charging funny even with a full battery. Thanks for putting this up!
@truckcentral starter wasnt bad its a loose hot connection. identical problem i had. i got under the truck and had someone hit start and watched sparks fly off the starter connector. tightened up and immediately fixed the issue. sometimes it would start sometimes not, FOR MONTHS.
Yeah, It’s very possible that was my issue too. But I’ve got to play it safe and make sure not to leave anything to chance. Appreciate the feedback. I’ll keep that in mind if I have more issues around 400k miles. 😅
Mr. Wheeler, thank you for the info. Something to be aware of if my truck starts acting up. Actually getting it inspected tomorrow and the one thing I know needs to be fixed is the bolt/ nut on the exhaust flange right before the muffler. The head of the bolt seems to have just sheared off for no reason. My wife noticed a strange sound from the exhaust while we were up at Penn State for the West Virginia game. Got home, looked under the truck to find the flange open a bit because of no bolt head. The boot issue sucks but they tend to wear out over time. Always looking at mine every oil change, I hate surprises. Hope your first issue is fixed. As always, good to see you sir.
Thanks, Jim! I actually was supposed to be at the Penn State v WV game, but plans changed last minute. Sorry about the exhaust. Hopefully it’s an easy fix!
@MrJustinWheeler it would've been great seeing you if you could've made it up there. An absolute great weekend with family and friends. Maybe next time.
I have the exact same issue right now with my 2015 Laramie. 3 new starters since last May, new battery last month,,,but same issue ! Starts when it feels like it !
23’ ram big horn 4x4 here. Battery tested good gauges are good Not any throwing it wants to start on the first initial cold start but it almost shakes the hole truck almost like it’s out of gas almost acts as if it’s a diesel. Dealership said it can’t find the problem they hooked it up to their computer’s it’s just the first initial cold start really struggles starting I’ll usually kill it if it struggles. Then the 2nd attempt it will fire right up very weird can stop & start after that all day no problems. Today it did it again I gave it gas and the RPM jumped to 2k steadily it stayed there so I killed it and the 2nd start this morning fired right up
Just bought a '23. I tend to own my vehicles for the long haul, but typically not more than 6-7k miles per year. It'll be interesting to see if/when this problem shows up. Thanks for the heads up. Great informative video.
Had the SAME problem: intermittently would just click and not start. I tightened the nuts on the starter solenoid and then reconnected the battery at the terminal. Started stronger than it had in years. I believe the nits on the solenoid were probably only finger tight from the factory. Also, I the dealer service center could NOT diagnose the problem. Stupid, imo. They had the truck for 3 nights supposedly testing everything. Took me a while reading and then 30 seconds under the truck to tighten. Didn’t even need to remove the heat shield. 2017 Ram 1500, 77k miles.
2011 Ram 1500 130,000 miles Crank No Start. Battery was bad so I replaced that, then starter went bad replaced that, alternator was next so I changed that. The crank no start was a little $9 buck relay that is on the circuit board inside of the TPIM. Until I soldered the old one out and the relay I got on Amazon I used a jumper. Pain in the but because the jumper where I had it was supposed to act like a relay however when I didn’t pull one side of the jumper my fuel pump kept running thus killing my battery also. Once I took the TPIM apart and put the new relay in truck runs normally again. There is a great video on how to do this on UA-cam 😊
I would say the loose connection is the main culprit. I would have have tightened that back up just to see. I say that now but if I already had the thing loose I would have just swapped it too lol.
Maybe change the alternator as well this way both are done around the similar time. Since you changed the battery and cleaned terminals and cables etc. Great video as always 😎
Thanks amigo. Christmas night leaving my folks house the my '21 with 57k clicked and didn't start. It took about 5 minutes of hitting start, throwing a jump pack on, taking the jump pack off, scratching my head before it randomly just fired up. Swapped the starter out last night and boom, fired right up. I did notice this truck has cranked slower than my 2019 since I bought it but didn't think much of it. Guess the starter was going for about 7k now of my ownership. For those doing this swap, drop the front of the front drive shaft and loosen the two bolts holding the black support plate around the lower starter bolt. This will save you an hour of screwing with it and wondering if you are even a mechanic.
I had the same problem. Especially since temperatures cooled from 110s down to 70s so i guess the metal shrank and the bolt became looser. Battery was fine. Once i tightened the bold holding the wire to the starter, went back to brand new!
Thanks Angel. You can get the starters tested at certain shops, but at that point, I’d feel more comfortable just replacing it with something new (with a warranty).
Load testing starters used to be something all auto parts stores did as a free service before they sold you a starter or alternator. At your mileage you were probably going to need a starter soon anyway but I suspect you have a connection issue at one of the many points between the battery and the starter.
In a shop, on a rack, its not so bad. On the driveway, video after video, I don't see anyone taking off the 4 drive shaft bolts to get easier access while on your back. Its only 4 bolts and you then have significantly more room to work.
My 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7 acted up yesterday and almost left me stranded 30 miles away from home. It would click but not turn over. After sitting in my truck researching different methods to get it started, I thought about the fuse block. I checked under the hood and found the starter fuse, labeled F40. The fuse visually looked fine, but I had no tools or multimeter to test it. Thank the heavens the fuse block under the hood had a spare F40 sitting in one of the spare slots. Swapped it out and fired right up. I’m skeptical about it being just the fuse though and I’m going to have to look at the actual starter when I get decent weather around Maryland. Too freaking cold out to be under a truck for hours trying to take two bolts off like most people here are saying lol. My truck had previous electrical issues a year before with the rack and pinion system failing which caused power steering loss while driving and the entire instrument panel to go haywire and shut down the truck. No lie, it spent 50 days in the dealership where they ended up finally replacing the rack and pinion system and it was working great until yesterday. This truck is becoming more of a liability the longer I hang on to it. If it wasn’t so pretty, I’d trade it in for a freaking Prius at this point.
Just had this happen to me this morning and thankfully it started with a jump, but I am going to test my battery after I drive it for a while today to see if it’s bad first, then on to the starter I guess. I have 77k on my ‘19 limited. Thanks for the heads up on the starter Mr Wheeler, dealership would have charged me a arm and a leg just to diagnose it…
I have owned Dodge Rams in the past and this seems to be an on going problem , after about or around 60,000 mile the starters seem to fail or have intermeated problems. I found that replacing the starter takes care of the no start issues.
Wow surprised to see the CV boot like that, any signs or symptoms besides the visual grease? If you remember I had issues with mine around 50k miles (low speed when turning would hear clicking/popping/clunking noises), I ended up replacing mine with a Heavy Duty Shaft with a thermoplastic outboard boot from Cardone, no issues so far at 60k and sounds are gone. What did you use to replace yours and do you think its wear and tear/bad boot, or did it tear on something like a rock etc?
My truck is doing the same thing and has less than 60k miles and just got a new battery less than a year ago. Do think it’s a bad connection or bad starter? It started after a long drive on vacation 5 months ago and just happens to my truck about once month then goes away
My 2015 needed a long block at 250k miles. Another 100k miles the accessories like fuel pump started failing. I’m getting it fixed. It’s been an awesome truck. Now I’m looking at a 2nd vehicle for instances if/when my truck fails and found a 2019 Ram with low miles however it appears to be insanely less reliable than my current model.
Same thing happened to me I replace the starter and it started and a few weeks later click click crap again. I replaced the starter relay and never happened again this was on my 2012 different truck but same story line
Hey thanks for your video, my truck is going through that right now replaced battery now I’m going to do the starter I hope that’s it 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 I appreciate your thoughts very helpful 😊
Mine is a 2020 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi. Thought I needed a starter after ruling out everything else. Guy told me to put a new battery in my key fob. I’ve done that and it’s started every time for 2 weeks now. Waiting for the next no start but keeping my fingers crossed.
I was thinking it must be a loose connection. You moved the battery cable terminals and then the truck started up. The next time you disconnected the battery cable terminals to remove the battery and then reconnected and it started up. Since it was intermittent I strongly believe it was a bad connection. Either at the battery cables or that cable on the starter. But, it’s done now and seems to be good to go.
had a brand new 2022 ram hemi laramie. less than a year and around 48000 miles the same probelm happened. what's crazy is theres no option to manually start with etorque. that would be nice
Have a 2500 and this happened to me few days ago. Battery test out fine so I will try the starter. Also same thing I was able to jump it and it started right up. Then waited a bit and then same thing
Mr Wheeler! Based off your experience with your 5th gen would you recommend chancing a 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie with 260,000? I recently found one for 15k and thought about getting it with hopes of getting another couple years from it. I do not drive much, I have a company vehicle for my day to day driving.
This happened to my 2020 when it had only 45k miles on it. I had no warning signs, just went out to the truck one morning and nothing. I will say that it was only 7 degrees out that morning. Anyway, I tried a new battery and that didn't help. Luckily for me it was covered under warranty.
Same here. Snowed last night in Colorado. I went to start it this morning and nothing... Just one pop sound from the starter. It did finally start. But then happened again. Battery. Alternator and starter all tested good. What was your issue? Is it fixed?
Just check the bolt on the power for the starter. Mine was way to lose for my liking. Tightened it up and I've had no issues for 3 weeks. Truck has 55k and I'd say it was just a bad connection issue.
@@davidduran8465 also, check that little wire that goes to starter. If thats corroded and bad connection it wont start. I can almost guarantee thats it. Its so common
Hate to see it happen to you too. Have almost the exact same story have an 2020 1500, 50k miles. Started what seemingly was a bad battery noticed some corrosion on the terminals. Cleaned it and it worked for another 3 weeks or so. One morning just a click no crank. Replaced the starter and apparently the extra drain causes the battery to have extra stress and that died a week after the starter. Wonder how wide spread the starter issue is, these engines have been around a whole wonder what changed.
So did this solve the problem? Your truck was having the exact same issues mine is. Just like you, I replaced the battery and everything was fine for a couple months and then it started again. Just want to see if this fixed it before I drop $300 on a starter.
Hey thanks for the video... I have a 2018 ram 3.6l which I experienced the same symptoms and replaced the starter... Which works fine after replacing it but only for about 5 or 6 starts and then the same symptoms so I've warrantied replaced the starter 5 times now once I was even performed by the dealership to which it happened again was curious if you've had any problems since replacing it...
Electric connector on starter wiring corrosion, I replaced the down wiring harness ,, exact symptoms… maybe just cleaning all surfaces ,,, you replacing start likely gave you fresh connections
Same exact problem, same exact solution on my 2019 Ram 1500! I started by replacing the battery which did not fix the issue, then I went and got a new starter (do not buy remanufactured!) and that completely solved the issue.
I have this problem and it is pretty frustrating. I have been living with it for months now and was fairly sure it was not the battery due to it being an intermittent problem. Also, even with a jump pack hooked on it still will occasionally fail to even try to turn over. further making me think corrosion (despite loooking clean) or some other weird issue. so I got a new battery, cleaned the connections and bam still nothing, so I have yet to finish this video but I know its some bs issue lol.
Just started having this problem on my 2021 (2500 6.4) two weeks ago. Truck has 27k and thankfully still under warranty. Currently at the dealership, service guy said he thinks bad battery cell. Haven't gotten a call confirming yet.
yea dealer has told me that 4 times now. on battery number 5. im taking the truck to them tomorrow and telling them i dont want it back until its fixed. 2020 Ram 1500 etorque with 26k miles. its ridiculous, car has almost been in the shop longer than ive had it in my possession. seems there are quite a few problems like this starting problem, ranging from seals around window or third brake light leaking water on to 48V battery behind seat and shorting things out intermittently. my problem only surfaces when i leave the truck parked for more than a week.
@@daxrussell8863 Waiting on a part now. Some sort of sensor on transmission that tells the truck its in park to allow for cranking. What I was told anyway. I guess time will tell.
Watched your video and I think this might be the issue I just experienced this morning with my 2019 Ram with 205k miles. Well first off on Monday (21 July) my check engine light turned on and my remote start hasn't worked since then. I ordered a code reader but it will not arrive until tomorrow. So this morning, I went out to start my truck pressed button and it tired to turn over and nothing, tried it two more times and nothing. My first thought was the battery, I went and checked the cables, cleaned the build up on the ground and reattached it so I could try and start it again. I tried to start it and I heard a pop through the speakers and no start and almost nothing is turning on when I push the start button. It is basically dead and unresponsive, I have to cycle through the push to start let it sit for a second and try it again. Same thing two more times, I hear a pop in through the speakers and I have no gauges and the engine does nothing. Has happened to you before, is there another reason the only thing on my dash that shows is no key fob detected? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
My 17 started this last week after christmas. Click no start, pull the battery it tests low, put a new battery in it runs fine for a week until this morning. Cranks and drives 15 min to gas station, go to start my drive to work after filling up and click no start. Had to jump it off. Ill start checking the starter connections after seeing your video. Thanks for posting!
Turns out my hot lug on the starter had worked its way loose snd the serrated lock nut had worn down and is smooth. Going to throw a new nut and lock washer on it and see if it fixes it.
More than a few people with this issue. My 2020 Ram 1500 with 37k miles, is going up on a flatbed as i type. Ive been chasing this peoblem now for months. Battery is tested and good, alternator good too. Rf module, opens and closes the doors and tries to start the truck. I get nothing but a loud "click". It's throwing no codes and the dealer "cant replicate the issue". Its been intermittent, but completely crapped out yesterday. Im forcing the dealer to put in a new starter.
Be careful getting your parts from Carquest. That’s where I was getting mine from like the radiator and water pump for some Carquest and they had to keep replacing it. Just a heads up maybe you’ll get lucky but I had to replace my starter to as well.
I have a 2007 with 85k on it and it's doing the exact same thing. I can drive it a short distance and it will randomly do it after shutting off the motor and going into the gas station a short amount of time. So, here is another exact symptom, but low miles, but lots of years.
Did you ever diagnose problem with air suspension? I have same ram 1500 limited and I installed b&w turnover ball just like you did and it has been awesome until now my rear bags drop sometimes after sitting a few hours. Not every time but sometimes
My truck is a 2020 ram 1500 Laramie, with 20,500 miles on it and it’s having starter issues. Gonna take it to the dealership, it should be under warranty. But it has to be towed
*Alright... let's get the Dusty Dodge back on the road.* This will probably happen to you at some point.
Thanks for this video!
@TruckCentral Have you had this issue in the past 3 months since the fix?
LOL MY 6OK TRUCK WONT START ITS 2 YEARS OLD...LMFAO , DODGE IS JUNK BUDDY.
That’s a good idea! I’ll keep that in mind in the future. Thank you!
That's a very good point and glad you brought that up. Kudos to you
This helped me out majorly tonight. THANK YOU
I am having the exact same symptoms right now. Wondering should I see if I can get the wire fix or change the starter?
12 point’s definitely have a place but your right. Always use a 6 point when you can.
Thanks again Justin, 5 days over 20 starts later, would try removing heat shield and tighten pos terminal on starter.
My 19 Ram is experiencing this problem now. Have to wait a week for service but glad I have this info to pass to dealership. Extended warranty expires in December, phew!
What was your culprit?
This video saved me a bunch! Turned out the starter was bad, but also blew the fuse. Truck is up and running! $220 and 4 hours!
Relax tough guy...youve got alot of drywall to put up this morning. Dont wear yourself out.@@cormaro13
Hello Mr.
@jonatanescobedo8748 still running fine. Even with the cold weather. If you're having trouble in cold weather I'd get your battery checked.
New starters are easy to install
Damn 55k in a 21. I have a 22 and only have 6800 miles on it in a year and a half.
@@UA-camcansuckmyshithole I live outside of the city and work in the city. So I drive a lot haha
I have a 2019 Limited as well love it do wish I got the panoramic moon roof though. Bought it a little over 3 years ago she has 36k on it. Love the videos for any future issues I might have 💪🏼
Thank you! I love the panoramic roof. But it sure lets in a lot of heat.
I have the same truck with the moon roof and I'm having this issue rn my truck won't start 83k miles on it.
Not only did I have the exact same problem….i saw exactly what I wanted to see down there as well on my driver side. I just tightened and buffed the connectors. They were loose. Thanks for the help!
I just rolled 178k on my 1500 5.7 Laramie (non-etorque). MN driver all it's life. Love your Vid's.
I had a similar starting problem. It ended up be a blow bulb on the 3rd brake light. Giving a faulty code to the PCM and not letting it start. So check the brake light, simple fix before crawling under for the starter.
How on earth did you figure this out
I knew exactly what the problem was😂.
I'll also add my brake lights worked the entire time. Just that stupid indicator stayed red and turned green when it see the brake pedal was pressed.
I’ve got a 2020 1500 Limited, freaking love this truck! Hoping to put as many miles on mine as yours !
Had the same issue just cleaned the connector that is ziptied in his video at 7:55 and it fixed the issue
You need a new battery in your key fob
First thing I noticed was the wear on the cheap undercarriage shielding by the starter... you do a lot of off roading, between the dirt and stuff hitting your undercarriage. I bet your connection to the starter was either loose or dirty; which explains the starter working on and off. It doesn't take much resistance on a 12v circuit to cause issues!
Its the wire and connector that goes to the solenoid on the starter. Its happened to me twice. Im on my second starter and I still needed to climb under and jiggle the terminal. Its super loose.
Finally had to crimp on a new terminal and no more problems.
Yes! For sure! Its that little wire that goes to the starter is the problem
Good to know!
2022 Ram 1500 4x4 with 80,000 miles, and my truck just did the same thing this afternoon. Thanks for the tip
Same issue with mine watched the video and removed and sprayed electric clean on connections now working like a charm again.
Thank God! I thought about the starter ten times but dismissed because the alternator was charging funny even with a full battery. Thanks for putting this up!
So, what was the problem on yours?? The starter nut??
@@alfredibarra8526 yes! 10 minute fix.
Glad you got it all sorted out my friend, good job!
Thanks Vinnie!
Great video! I had the same symptoms on my 2018 Power Wagon. I changed the starter, no more starting issues.
Wow! Great video. My RAM is with the local mechanic shop for this as well.
Had this happen on my 21 Grand Cherokee. Had it for 3 days under 500 miles. Took almost a week to get a starter. Same exact symptoms just clicked.
I’m having the same problem with my 2020 Ram Rebel 1500!! What a great new year’s gift 😅 thanks for the help
Same problem with my 2020 Rebel. I tried a new battery, still wouldn't start. Have you got yours started yet?
Same thing here on my 2020 Rebel, on its way back to the dealer for the 4th time in 6 weeks. Fun stuff! @@ChrisRouxPhotography
One upside of the 2wd, no front drive shaft or differential in the way. Can get to the starter as clear as day.
Yep, there are definitely some upsides to having 2wd. I was just thinking about that the other day when I was hammering on a 2wd S-10 starter. 🤣
For someone that will most likely never take it off roading is this a solid truck
Great video and thanks for the update! KEEP ON ROCKING!
Thanks CJ. Many more miles (and videos) to come.
I would say the loose connection is the main culprit. I would have have tightened that back up just to see. I say that now but if I already had the thing loose I would have just swapped it too lol.
Yep that’s exactly what I thought too.
Maybe change the alternator as well this way both are done around the similar time. Since you changed the battery and cleaned terminals and cables etc.
Great video as always 😎
Maybe pay attention to the video next time 😂
Thanks amigo.
I was really close to buying a new starter but I used your recommendation and boom it started. My truck was down for a week over a loose 13mm part.
amazing! glad I could help

Great video Justin. Curious to know if there is a way to test that starter without taking it all apart. I hope this fixes your issue.
2020 RAM Limited 5.7 Hemi, same fricking situation brother. Part comes in tomorrow. Wish me luck 🙏
My 2021 is going in 2 days for a new starter. Same exact problem! Difference is I have less thank 19k miles
Oh wow. That thing should still be like brand new. Sorry to hear that my friend. Good luck with the repair!
Just picked up a 2022 Laramie last week with 13K odo. Maybe I should make my appointment now.
Update. The starter was replaced under warranty. Crazy!
🤣 That hesitated a bit there. That was scary. Prob was the loose wire.
Do you have a remote start?
That's an interesting fix
Very common issue with ram, busted cv boots. Mine was done at 30k. Napa CV shafts at my local NAPA are lifetime warranty.
@@-a-strikelures1212oh I had to get a new starter.
Nice video! I couldn't tell in the video, but does the truck have a different startup sound now?
It actually does sound a little different. Hard to tell if it’s just a better sound, or just different. But it was noticeable.
started with mine at 60,000 miles. Something to look forward to this weekend! Great video!
Just check the bolt on the power for the starter. Mine was way to lose for my liking. Tightened it up and I've had no issues for 3 weeks. Truck has 55k and I'd say it was just a bad connection issue.
Thanks, I'll check it out tonight!@@renecastellanos9155
@@davidduran8465 also, check that little wire that goes to starter. If thats corroded and bad connection it wont start. I can almost guarantee thats it. Its so common
I'm at 59K and have had that problem last 2 days.
70 thousand km 3500 6.4 hemi my starter went . Yes, I changed my battery first .. I'm happy warranty coverd it
My 19” ram has done this twice. Both times it was the module that recognizes the FOB went when the battery gets low.
Swap out the starter relay, they can and will get crusty contacts from a bad starter with over-amps going through them?
I have this problem and it is pretty frustrating. I have been living with it for months now and was fairly sure it was not the battery due to it being an intermittent problem. Also, even with a jump pack hooked on it still will occasionally fail to even try to turn over. further making me think corrosion (despite loooking clean) or some other weird issue. so I got a new battery, cleaned the connections and bam still nothing, so I have yet to finish this video but I know its some bs issue lol.
See my comment above. Might solve your problem?
I had the exact same issue on my 2020 1500. Replacing starter now after putting in a new battery in and having the same issue.
Had same problem just hit the back of starter with a spanner and boom car started …Same time great video
Im having this issue currently. Shade-tree tokd me its the starter. I plan to have it towed to a shop tomorrow
Great video. Looking forward to the exhaust update😅
Thanks! Coming up soon!
Just a heads up maybe you’ll get lucky but I had to replace my starter to as well.
when are we going to see what the new truck is. i have personally always owned chevy's, but this Ram is on my radar for my next truck.
Man 2019 came with so many electrical problems!! I wish they made a PC replacement for this truck
Have you had any problems with the transmission?
I have a 2007 with 85k on it and it's doing the exact same thing. I can drive it a short distance and it will randomly do it after shutting off the motor and going into the gas station a short amount of time. So, here is another exact symptom, but low miles, but lots of years.
Did you ever diagnose problem with air suspension? I have same ram 1500 limited and I installed b&w turnover ball just like you did and it has been awesome until now my rear bags drop sometimes after sitting a few hours. Not every time but sometimes
Hold the starter button soft and it will slowly turn over and cut on, the starter button is the flaw, I’m on my second 1 in a year
My truck is a 2020 ram 1500 Laramie, with 20,500 miles on it and it’s having starter issues. Gonna take it to the dealership, it should be under warranty. But it has to be towed
My mechanic replaced the battery, he said it was the starter not the battery.
That's starter is sure in a tight ass place.
Sure was. But not too bad if you have a few extensions laying around. 🤣
