Jason Vieaux - M. Giuliani: Grand Overture

- Although he was a younger contemporary and colleague of Beethoven, Giuliani followed the more strictly classical principles of Mozart and Haydn. This is illustrated perfectly in his Grand Overture, which consists of a brief, slow, minor-mode introduction followed by a fully developed major-mode sonata-allegro structure. Giuliani himself was a guitar virtuoso, so this piece requires great facility and invites imaginative coloring from the player.
The introduction is quite simple; a gently throbbing ostinato bass note underlies brief passages that initially cascade downward and then rise expectantly. The movement's main matter is built upon good-natured, even bumptious, music that relies heavily on fast passagework and burbling tunes, with some sly partial scales and a couple of crescendos tossed in for humorous effect. Indeed, if this were orchestrated it would be indistinguishable from an opera overture by Giuliani's idol, Rossini.

• Jason Vieaux - I. Albe...
Exquisite playing! Like an orchestra....and every single note meaningful - powerful. A perfect interpretation! Yes! A new guitar hero :-)
I'm huge fan of Jason's, saw him perform twice, just incredible technique and dynamics, brilliant! Working through this piece myself, so had to see how it's done here!
Great performance! So much filling in the interpretation. Plays with filling much like my favorite guitarist Julian Bream.
Interpretation brimming with exciting musicality! Stefano
Interpretazione traboccante di emozionante musicalità! Stefano
The description reminds me of how wine drinkers describe their wine
wow...this guitar is like a canon, very explosive....!
Beautiful interptretation. Especially the tempo indications "Andante sostenuto" for the Introduction and the "Allegro maestoso" for the Sonata Vieaux really takes seriously. Often one finds interpretations that sound too rushed (and fail or play unevenly in the triplets or the rapid ocataves passages) and do not know how to portray the humorous, the operatic charcater of the Grande Ouverture by Maiestro Giuliani. Vieaux' interpretation is different. Vieaux also knows how to bring out the dynamics excellently and with nuances. Thus the 8 min. 40 seconds are really varied and the music entertains - in a highly virtuosic and musical way. Thank you!
Wow Great Interpretation !
Best version, no doubt.
A great master!
Great! Really like orchestra.
Great performance bravo!
Bravo
Very good!
It's those damn triplets
Love the part at 4:13
Brilliant.. Do whatever feels right :-)
bravissimo
Nice
He always looks FAR too big to be playing such a small guitar. Plus his right hand position looks "textbook wrong" but he's a phenomenal player. Great sound, insane technique, wonderful interpretation. And that RH thumbnail....DANG.
fucking awsom dude!! great performance such a hard piece.. im mastering now hope in certan period can improve a performance like grand overture should sound.. cheers!!..relly love the interpretation
Amazing playing!! Inspirational. What I would like to know is how do you go about memorising a piece like this? I battle with a 2 page A4 piece let alone a magnum opus like this?!? Fantastic playing!
When you study a bit about the sonata form, pieces of the Haydn-Mozart period onwards can be understood easily. Don't know if you already got an answer for your question, but if not, read some texts about sonata form. It's such an interesting topic. Cheers!
Lots and lots of practice
I just recently committed this piece to memory, and yes, it is quite a project piece, took me months to do, still working on getting it tight/clean. No doubt, 12 pages of music is daunting, but I will say, it is really and exciting, dynamic, and fun piece to play. Jason is such a phenomenal player, love the guy! Seen him perform live twice, a true virtuoso master player.
dope
