This song was released in 1999 and went to number 1 in the Ofiicial UK Singles Chart, (she made it into the Guinness Book of World Records, in 1999, aged 53, becoming the "Oldest Female Singer To Reach No.1 in the UK Chart)
I remember this and was so exited to see a new song again from them finally. I really love this song as much as the old ones. Debra Harry is beautiful here as ever!!
99 i thought i was bit earley remeber buy cd single was in my teens listening to rave music when this came out think it was first chart music i listened to in ages love blondie went to see them live at roundhouse few years ago would go again anytime ,when im not raveing lol
"Maria" is one of my favorite Blondie songs! "Heart of Glass is my favorite.❤ Blondie was a part of my childhood and teen years. The 80s were good times!😊🎉
Same here. Followed them since 1977 when I was 16. Still have their fanclub fanzine magazines etc. Great band and music! Still have all their/her vinyl records from around the world up to and including Debbie's Solo career. Then cd's for 'Maria' and 'No Exit'.
Maria was Blondie's a big comeback single. This was the first new music the band had come out with in 17 years. It was released 98/99. The album it comes from, No Exit is really good. This was a huge song when it came out. Debbie had been a solo artist and doing a lot of film work in the late 80's and early 90's. Blondie has some many great songs. I'm glad to see you guys going back to them. Some others I think you would like: Dreaming, Slow Motion, Union City Blue, The Hardest Part, Hanging On The Telephone, Denis, Detroit 442, In The Flesh, No Exit, Good Boys, Shakedown, Undone, Golden Rod, Background Melody, Mother, What I Heard, Love Doesn't Frighten Me, China Shoes, Take It Back, Backroom, Take Me In The Night, Sugar On The Side, Long Time, Fun, My Monster, Gravity. So many great songs. Debbie's solo career has some great songs as well, worth checking into her solo works as well: Backfired, Inner City Spillover, Jump Jump, Now I Know You Know, French Kissin' In The USA, Secret Life, Beyond The Limit, In Love With Love, Free To Fall, I Want That Man, Brite Side, Rush Rush, Bike Boy, Sweet And Low, I Can See Clearly, Strike Me Pink, Dog Star Girl, Mood Ring, The Fugitive, Deep End, Two Times Blue, Whiteout, Love With A Vengeance. Debbie also worked with Dolly Parton on a version of Heart Of Glass that will be out on Dolly's forthcoming rock album, Rockstar next month.
Blondie is one of the best bands. Love their music. This song saw Blondie getting back together with Clem Burke (drummer) and Chris Stein (guitar) after having been broken up as a band for almost two decades and Debbie went solo. Blondie ended it in 1982 and this song brought them back in 1999. A really good song and shows their staying power and talent.
I love this song, something so beautifully haunting about her voice. Not to mention it's impressive that she was still performing this well and she was like 55 or 60 when this came out.
@travismorris9303 - Well that's not old, and actually voice improves with age like fine wine and cheese. Take it from me who knows about music. The only time it wouldn't improve is if you have a health issue that could affect your voice.
Great pick! You have wondered if Blondie has a "sound", as their sound seems to be all over the place; well, this song represents their "core sound"! After a tragic breakup in 1982, we all thought Blondie was done. Then, years later, this song appears, and we were like "Hey, this sounds like Blondie....WAIT this IS Blondie!" This song is instantly recognizable as a Blondie song. We couldn't believe it, such a great song & an epic return. After their breakup, they reformed the band in 1997, with most of the original members and some new faces. But they could not get a record label to sign them! So they formed their own label, and came out with their first album in over 15 years, and this song shoots to #1; their story is epic. Blondie was always a rock band to me; they started as a punk rock band, and I first heard them when the rock station in Houston debuted "One Way Or Another" (A CLASSIC rock song, and you guys should check it out). Their later stuff is actually the sound you've heard; Rapture, The Tide is High, those came after they established their punk rock sound. Heart of Glass was done as an experiment (another great story), and they had no idea it would become their biggest hit. But their rock sound came before the others :) This song is actually a return to their roots, 2 decades after they first formed. Keep rockin it guys!
Great comment! The other layer to that tragic break-up, alongside the inevitable and natural 'band break-up' story was Chris Stein's illness and Debbie's work caring for him, as she started her own solo career. That was the icing on the cake of their comeback, there's a deeply personal story at the heart of Blondie which I feel contributed to them being one of the best bands ever, and they have never disappointed me live.
Clem Burke, the human metronome, great drummer! Back in the 80's they put a heart rate monitor on him to see what his heart rate was during concerts. You can guess how high it went. I got to stand on the side of the stage at a Blondie concert in Oakland in 1978, got to meet her, gorgeous woman, sweet.
And Clem Burke's work with the Eurythmics is often overlooked, he gave them great energy too, he was playing drums when I saw them play live around 83/84, post-Blondie and was in some of their later videos.
One of my favorite Blondie songs. This different style came in at a very good time too. Late 90s/early 2000s was a time when older pop/rock groups were having a surgence. Blondie, U2, Duran Duran, etc. Bands that made charts in the 80s, were making charts again and it was exciting seeing bands we loved back then coming into a newer sound but still had that fun groove from the 80s and brought in a newer generation of fans. 😎👍
I saw Blondie "live" in 2013, tour with CheapTrick (co-tour) They were both quite awesome! Have been a fan, since the late 70's -got this "return album, end of the 90's.
So funny, I was actually just listening to Blondie in the car today and thought that I wished you'd do another song. "Fade Away and Radiate", "Sunday Girl" and "Dreaming" are all ones I think you'd like. And yes, Debbie Harry was 53 when this was released in 1999! Still totally rocking though.
I remember being so excited when I heard Blondie was back and they had put out this single. I loved the song on the first listen and was in awe when I saw her in the video and how well she had aged and still had her phenomenal voice. Sulky and raspy and high pitched and everything in between...
Blondie's discography has a lot of great hard hitting bangers from the 70's, 80's. For example "Hanging on the Telephone," "Dreaming," "One Way or Another," etc.
One of my and my husband's most favorite ones. We played it on his 40th birthday party, huge success. And my husband is a metal head. Good music knows no boundries 😉
Grew up listening to Blondie. I had Parallel Lines on 8-Track, Vinyl, and CD. Dreaming, Sunday Girl, One Way or Another, & The Tide is High are all with a listen.
There's another great Blondie song that flies under the radar that's rockin' and mostly flew under the radar - "Accidents Never Happen." Only one reaction to date that I could find. Guitar solo/instrumentation at end best from them that I've heard. And I've been hearing them since the '70's.
Love this song! Her voice is so awesome in this song. I remember it playing on the radio in 1999 every time on date nights on my way home from dropping off my gf in west Austin and driving back to south Austin. Great memories. I still own this song.
There just isn’t a bad Blondie song, and I’ll never forget as an impressionable teenage boy seeing her perform Denis on Top Of The Pops on BBC1 here in the UK, but I still have to stop whatever I’m doing whenever Atomic comes on the radio.
Thanks, you reminded me of the day I got the train into Edinburgh, bought Eat To The Beat from my Saturday-job wages, carried it home and put it on the turntable, I still remember it was cold but very sunny, and when I heard Atomic I instantly knew it was a Number 1, it blew the top of my head completely off, I remember I had to tell everyone I knew! It was a few months before they released it as a single, but thank goodness I was right, for the sake of my reputation...
This was Blondie's "comeback" single, released after the group had been apart for 17 years. By this point they were in their 50s. It was a big hit in the UK, but not in the USA.
Thanks so much for playing Maria one of my favorite Blondie songs ever. Whenever I’m down in the dumps or just feeling nice uplifting song I have to play it. You might want to check out her song called mother think it’s about a bar somewhere there’s also another song I will look it up soon or she’s almost sings like opera singer.I didn’t even know that was Blondie when I was listening to it it was pure magic.
"One way or another" is a very unique Blondie song and one of my favourites. I recommend the studio version because I feel like the live versions are not in best quality recorded. Check it out.. it will haunt your dreams ;)
Honestly, you have covered a lot of great Blondie songs, but have barely touched their greatest album, Parallel Lines. Literally one of the greatest albums of all time in Rock history IMO. it is pretty much one of those rare albums where every song is awesome! (This won't be a popular opinion, but I actually think "Heart of Glass" is not even close to the best song on that album.) The impact of that album when it came out was huge! You can't go wrong with anything on it, but the top songs to check out would be "One way or another, Hanging on the Telephone, 11 59, or Picture this." Definitely the album version for all these!
I'm 59. Saw them in Indianapolis two months ago. They were so good and their fans ranged from 6 to 60 at that show. Phenomenal talent and leading a Phenomenal movement. Try Choke from one of their recent Argentina shows if you want to see a crazy crowd.
My favorite Blondie tune - thank you! I love the line "...walking on imported air." My (non-Blondie) recommendations: Bow Wow Wow "Do You Wanna Hold Me," The Primitives "Crash," Moonpools & Caterpillars "Hear," Altered Images "Don't Talk to Me About Love," and for a chick with attitude - Missing Persons "Mental Hopscotch" or "Walking in LA."
Jay & Amber, you guys need to check out Blondie's "One Way Or Another", which is one of their hardest rocking New Wave tracks. The inspiration for the song was Debbie Harry's own encounter with a stalker. You're gonna love this one!!! 🔥❤😎
This was a huge comeback hit for them after almost two decades off the charts. Didn't revive their chart career but was a welcome throwback to hear at the close of the 20th Century.
My fave Blondie song is Call Me...great driving song. Tide is High is great and the B-side of the record Suzy and Jeffrey was played a lot in my bedroom in 1981/82 lol. And yes I love Maria. Check out "One Way or Another."
This is tied for my fav Blondie song…tied with The Tide is High…their most ska song (people think reggae…but it’s ska). Speaking of ska…please listen to the song Don’t Let the Bastards Grind You Down, by the Toasters…NYC SKA!!!
Just saw them play at the festival in Louisville, Ky. They were AWESOME! And I had completely forgotten about this tune until they played it. What a banger!
First time I heard this on the radio I did not have to be told who it was, one of a kind voice. i think in the era of Blondie there was a wider contrast of songs. so different many of them. Try the No Exit Album including the title track which is different and one of my favs End To End.
This has become one of my favorite Blondie songs. Debbie Harry sings the chorus so beautifully. Oh, and I can't believe ya'll haven't done Blondie's "One Way or Another" yet. What on earth are you waiting for?
I loved all of Blondie's hits back in their heyday of the late 70's and early 80's, and even though there was a near 20 year gap before their comeback with this song, it was, for me, just as great as their early hits
Earlier Blondie is amazing. Presence, Hanging on the Telephone, Sunday Girl , Fanmail. I hope sometime you might listen to these to get the feel of Blondie at their best.
I liked the Parallel Lines album from 78 (?) the most. It's the only album of theirs I got. And, the record itself had a picture of Deborah stamp on it. Very cool back then. Wasn't until this song came along I got back into them in the late 90's or early 2000's. Good hearing it again!
The song was written by Blondie keyboardist Jimmy Destri and produced by Craig Leon. Taken from their seventh album, No Exit (1999), it was Blondie's first new release since 1982
This was a comeback hit for Blondie in 1999. You have to react to another song from them at this time called "No Exit" which included some rap from Deborah Harry & Coolio. Cool Song! 😎
I suggest one of their first singles, "X Offender." Another one that is quintessential Blondie is "Hanging on the Telephone." It's Debbie at her most aggressive.
More to check out? Ya gotta do "Dreaming"! Clem Burke's drum work on that song is fantastic, and it's my favorite Blondie song. Also, I think Amber will love the song "In the Flesh". That song has an old school 50's vibe.
Blondie was one of the most Iconic Bands of the late 70’s & 80’s. To think where they started as a Punk Band and ventured into modern rock for the time was a testament to their diversity and willingness to change with the times. You mentioned Rapture in your summary, did you know that Rapture is widely accepted as being the first ever recorded Rap Music song (which is basically talking thru the song instead of singing vocally). Hence the name Rap coming from the title of the song.
Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man - Candy Man (Both Great Horns !!) Also - Lady Marmalad Annie Lenox (Eurythmics) - Would I Lie to You - I Need a Man - Thorn in My Side Gwen Stefanie - It's My Life - What You Waiting For Shikira - When ever Where ever - Objection Tango Head Pins - Don't it Make You Feel (like Dancing) - Turn it Loud - Just One More Time Toronto - Your Daddy Don't Know - Start Telling the Truth
Not bad?? Im surprised. Its bloody awesome 😎😎 Each to their own i suppose. This was huge when it was released in her later years. Shes still got the sass here and still the brilliant Blondie sound. I saw her live back when this released and this song was so great in an arena, a lot rockier and louder. Keep up the great reactions though. 👏👏👏👏
I agree, I’m surprised “Not bad” is his reaction. This is such a great song in many ways. I guess try it again not watching the video. Just let the song take you places.
Debbie never married Chris Stein, and whilst she did indeed help him through a very serious rare illness, Chris has been married himself for many years and has grown up kids, one of whom tragically died a few months ago from an overdose.
Yeah this was Debbie's comeback single. You beet me to it. When this record came out to be it was an afirmation that Debbie still had it. She was still a force to be reconned with.
@@beachbumsailordude I smiled to myself at the thought that all the '80s and '90s female "stars" heard this and said "Debbie's back.....We're finished!"
This song was released in 1999 and went to number 1 in the Ofiicial UK Singles Chart, (she made it into the Guinness Book of World Records, in 1999, aged 53, becoming the "Oldest Female Singer To Reach No.1 in the UK Chart)
It's a shame it bombed in the US. I had never even heard of it, but I like it.
French kissing in the USA
I remember this and was so exited to see a new song again from them finally. I really love this song as much as the old ones. Debra Harry is beautiful here as ever!!

"Dreaming" by Blondie is one of my all-time favorite songs. Clem Burke is a beast on the drums.
Yes he is.
Hint, hint: Amber and Jay--this would be a great song to do in the future!
I've been trying to get them to do "Dreaming".
I'll second this, Dreaming is a must-listen!
I listened to that song today. ❤
"Maria" is one of my favorite Blondie songs! "Heart of Glass is my favorite.❤ Blondie was a part of my childhood and teen years. The 80s were good times!😊🎉
I don't think I could pick a favorite Blondie song. The entire Eat to the Beat Album is just incredible -
The Tide is High is myfavorite from her…takes me back to junior high❣️
Same here. Followed them since 1977 when I was 16. Still have their fanclub fanzine magazines etc.
Great band and music!

You recommend far too many songs there haga
Agree with all of those ... but let's go with "Union City Blue" 🥰
I LOOOOOVE Shakedown and Long Time. Blondie's newer work gets lost in the huge wake created by all their classics.
Whoever decided to hit the bells during the chorus deserves a raise
The chimes are just right aren't they! ❤❤
Absolutely. The bells give it a gospel vibe that takes it to the next level.
Especially with the Catholic prayers woven into the lyrics

It’s amazing how much they recreated that classic Blondie sound after such a long absence. ✌️
Keyboard player Jimmy Destri an original member is also on this album, song.
@@flyingburritobro68yup. He was the one who wrote this song.
As far as I remember Maria was the longest period between consecutive no 1 hits in the UK at 21 years between this and The Tide is High
She's an icon, and 78. She must have sold a billion posters.
This has to be the greatest comeback song ever.

FWIW, Debbie was in her mid 50s when they recorded this.
Clem Burke, the human metronome, great drummer! Back in the 80's they put a heart rate monitor on him to see what his heart rate was during concerts. You can guess how high it went.

Speaking of ska…please listen to the song Don’t Let the Bastards Grind You Down, by the Toasters…NYC SKA!!!
Hanging On The Telephone from Blondie is a must
Just saw them play at the festival in Louisville, Ky. They were AWESOME! And I had completely forgotten about this tune until they played it. What a banger!
Blondie were ALWAYS rockers, they came out of the CBGBs punk scene. But they also were not afraid to change it up.
The Hardest Part is a banger!🤘
Yes it is. Love that video.
Debbie (understandably) always gets all the attention, but the band is incredibly talented, very tight, always were.
Mother is a must.
I absolutely love Blondie. And, I love this song. I grew up on their music, but really got into them on the release of Parallel Lines.
A couple of other more rockin' tracks of Blondie, "One Way or Another" and "Call Me" are from their earlier days.
Love this one! So cool that it was released in 1999 and yet it's a seemingly perfect throw-back to late 70's/early 80's. An awesome time travel piece!
Can you imagine a 10yr old Madonna watching Debbie and thinking to herself, "I could do that"
I loved all of Blondie's hits back in their heyday of the late 70's and early 80's, and even though there was a near 20 year gap before their comeback with this song, it was, for me, just as great as their early hits
I never listened to any Blonde records, just knew her hits. Never heard this before. I love it. Thank you for reacting to this
Great song; even more so when you realize it’s been 21 years since “Heart of Glass”!
Earlier Blondie is amazing. Presence, Hanging on the Telephone, Sunday Girl , Fanmail.
I hope sometime you might listen to these to get the feel of Blondie at their best.
Saw this summertime and pil great song still going strong 47 years great live band
I liked the Parallel Lines album from 78 (?) the most. It's the only album of theirs I got. And, the record itself had a picture of Deborah stamp on it. Very cool back then. Wasn't until this song came along I got back into them in the late 90's or early 2000's. Good hearing it again!
I love this song. Blondie is a great band!
Cool Song! 😎
The chorus really highlights Debbie Harry's incredible range.
I suggest one of their first singles, "X Offender." Another one that is quintessential Blondie is "Hanging on the Telephone." It's Debbie at her most aggressive.
This is an older Blondie and I like how they've got a more mature sound
Good choice Amber , Debbie is an absolutely beautiful lady and a legend, I’ve managed to see Blondie a number of times, great live Band
She Still Rocks.... 30 odd years latter.. not many can do that
Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man - Candy Man (Both Great Horns !!) Also - Lady Marmalad
Annie Lenox (Eurythmics) - Would I Lie to You - I Need a Man - Thorn in My Side
Gwen Stefanie - It's My Life - What You Waiting For
Shikira - When ever Where ever - Objection Tango
Head Pins - Don't it Make You Feel (like Dancing) - Turn it Loud - Just One More Time
Toronto - Your Daddy Don't Know - Start Telling the Truth
I would love to see you guys react to Dreaming. It is my favorite Blondie song and I think it’s just about the perfect pop rock song.
I was 9 when I first heard this song on the Radio when it was released. One of my all the favourite songs.
I missed this when you originally posted it. My favorite Blondie song, Maria.
I’m surprised y’all haven’t reacted to “Dreamin’”. Classic Blondie!! You’ll Love It!❤
Her husband is one of the guitarist . She helped her husband thru health problems during a time .
Debbie never married Chris Stein, and whilst she did indeed help him through a very serious rare illness, Chris has been married himself for many years and has grown up kids, one of whom tragically died a few months ago from an overdose.
One way or another, In the flesh, Dreaming, Sunday girl. These are others you could check out
My favourite Blondie song! Got tickets to see her next year, can’t wait!
Blondie's comeback song, the whole Album is good. I think I've listened to this song probably every day since release.
Love Blondie & this song, Debbie Harry has a brilliant singing voice
Great song! This was Blondie's comeback.
Yeah this was Debbie's comeback single. You beet me to it. When this record came out to be it was an afirmation that Debbie still had it. She was still a force to be reconned with.

I smiled to myself at the thought that all the '80s and '90s female "stars" heard this and said "Debbie's back.....We're finished!"
@@roypalfrey5694 I didn't exactly say that but music hasn't exactly improved since the days of Blondie.
