I love this version. The way she steps back for the band to play, then walks to the mike, sings, steps back. That's class and respect for everyone in the band. Then the last run up front to jerk those final beats out! Still leaving it all on stage!
Well, the little girls should let out all the alcohol and drug abuse and her other "escapades", if they want to be healthy and clean :D But othewise - i agree. A real star, no build up plastic bi1ch of modern times... Debbie Harry WAS Lady Punk.
You are correct! Blondie a Charismatic genius. And so perfect how she can switch from perfectly calm to lunatic mode. There will never be another Debbie.
Deb is 54 here and just sounds incredible. Her voice-range, tone, phrasing just kept improving after Blondie’s initial break up in 1982. Give a listen to her work with the Jazz Passengers in the 90’s; just wonderful. And that Clem Burke 😍
A singer's voice is at its richest and fullest when they hit their 50's. It's why this is my favorite performance of this. Her voice was at its absolute peak and the Jazz Passengers stuff is a perfect example.
@@shyba2011 I'm a sound engineer, and "sound quality" generally refers to the recording, not her voice. Sounds like a balanced mix to me, and no major compression artefacts. And no, it wasn't a wise crack. Those lines she sings kick in the saturation in the mix via the side-chain, sounds great. Seems you missed the goal by some several football pitches.
Debbie Harry had more stage presence in her 50s stood stock still with her hand on her hip than most singers will ever have at the absolute peak of their career.
Stevie Knicks, Blondie, Joan Jett, and regretfully, I say Pat Benatar . Despite the fact her daughter's are duck lip " social influences " despite their mothers fight to be heard. Such a shame.
One of my favourite Blondie songs and performances.. Debbie Harry’s nonchalant stage presence and HUGE voice make this pure #musicmagic I listen to this song every single day
She took care of herself, she only got fat once, I remember then she got it together (therapy I think) and lost weight and back jamming. This is a lesson to Americans stop eating that garbage food take care of your body and you'll always be beautiful, Blondie is 77 and still hot! When I was a kid in the 80s I had a crush on her 🎶
Maria,.. you've gotta see her,.... When she hits those notes they go right through you like a subway train. Incredible. Her voice got even better over time.
I saw them in Portugal on the same Tour that year! I had the chance to exchange a few words ( and 2 kisses 🤩😍) with Debbie that night, after the concert! One fo my greatest life memory!
1999.. I just finished one contract on cruise liner and went to Germany and this song was released.. I heard in the car on the radio.. After that i went back to work for cruises.. but that song make me remember my time in Germany.. Great .. much better times..
Deborah Harry is a most ravenously beautiful, sensuous being in form and presence, possessing an absolutely marvelous voice and that unique style which defies labels. Yet, when you see her, you know instantly this is Blondie, and there is only one like her in the whole wide world, and there will always be only one, the one and only Deborah Harry.
Debbie Harry really is one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. She really knows how to use her voice to stunning effect and this song is a perfect illustration of that; the sly stance and creamy tonality she stakes out in the verses and then her soaring, emphatic command in the verses--it's a masterful display of knowing exactly when and what to do. She positively makes you believe Maria is the most glorious girl you've ever encountered. What a persuasive and dynamic performance. It's a horrid shame Top 40 didn't get on board with this track. It was totally deserving of mainstream success.
I was a grunge/metal boy back then and I hooked up with this song immediately, there were only a few 50 years old rockers in the front of the scene with fresh music in the air, and Blondie was one of them, a few years later I discovered as I was growing as a rocker that those old guys from blondie were just freaking legends. And what can you say about that huuuuuuuuuge front woman....Debbie is just timeless, there's only a few people that can inspire such a seductive aura in both genders, and in rock&roll we love that kind of aura.....in the male counterpart I can think of both JimMorrison and Michael Hutchence, Debbie is defenetly the queen in that regard....that combination of beauty, danger and attitude that so haunting.
I only learned recently that Maria was released in 1999 (I assume it was recorded not much earlier). I was amazed and impressed to learn that. All these many years, I thought Maria was from the 1980s. It has the power and energy of youthful Blondie. I was surprised that Debbie Harry belted out those notes in her 50s.
Debbie was 54 years old & still looked hot AF! 👀🔥 A stunning woman with no need to wear scantily clad clothes & dance around. Her voice & presence is all that was needed for this amazing performance. 🤩
Awesome later hit by blondie, right up there with heart of glass, sunday girl, call me, dreaming, to name a few, debby and the guys are really into the song, Clem has got to be the hardest working drummer I've ever seen he is awesome both himself and the drums get a heck of a workout

Debbie Harry sounds great here. This song has low notes and high notes, and she nails each one, seemingly effortlessly. Damn.
