Hey Deiv, would you ever be interested in posting the full videos unedited, no need for vocals or anything on gumroad as well? It would help a lot sometimes with trying to see what layer mode was being used to get certain effects in the environment, etc
Hi Gene. It’s a bit too much work to do that because I need to check the videos and edit them in case i include NDA stuff accidentally. Also that will take up too much space and will probably take a few days to render. 60+ hrs realtime. Not possible with my schedule. Also, I can’t sell these in gumroad because they are owned by riot. Instead, I plan to make a shorter realtime tutorial of a personal splash art. But it will take time since im still busy. Hopefully later this year! 😀

amazing art and breathtaking levels of detail and polish! the complexity of the number layers looks quite daunting, is there preset structure you use there? Also thank you for sharing this process, it's good to see how such professional work is created
The logic in my layering is actually very simple. It's just the sheer amount of elements that make it have that many layers. The base layer is the simple painting layer with a basic lighting, then on top of that I usually put a color dodge layer for those super strong rim lights, then another layer on top for textures, etc. I apply this logic to the major groups which are the foreground elements, the character, and the background. Once everything is done, I put more layers on top of everything to give it a more cinematic feel like light blooms, noise, particles, etc.
im gonna take an educated geuss here and say that roughly every 2-3 minutes of this timelapse, it amounts to a one day of digital painting for this splash art piece, since it is a fact that splash artists are generally given 3 weeks to finish a splash character piece.
Close! Splash art actually take 5 weeks! I also dont include the rejected sketches here and also pause recording when im thinking or researching. Its hard work!

It's a smart object that is instanced inside the PSD. If I change one, everything changes at the same time. :) Basically I made one smart object per card color then duplicate it so that it is instanced.
@@deivcalviz OH :O i have never thought about using plugins in my life to draw digitally thanks for this new knowledge! and incredibly fast reply too lmfao
Yeah but thats the goal! It's to make it look close to finish during that stage so that it can get approved and locked for the rest of the tiny detail work.
@@deivcalviz that's good to know, how do manage to not forget any detail? every single section of that drawing is well detailed, i've missed a details in small drawings and realizing after posting them on instagram.
Nicolás Makoala Sometimes I circle areas I need to work on so that on the next day I will remember it. I recommend not posting your art immediately after you finish it. Maybe look at it again on the next day and will most likely see some things to improve. Hope that makes sense. :)
You can press the record button and do what you want then press stop once you are done. My actions are just presaved lens blur with different strengths. And the other one is just a select>invert>fill action. Ill provide these on my next tutorial next yr. 🙂
So im absolutely dying to know. Ive just found your channel and your art is absolutely insane. I have a question though! i noticed that you tend to go back to the sketching stage multiple times, and i just wanted to know why that is? Hope you could get back to me! subbed
Good question. It is because I am not yet approved for rendering and by redoing the sketch, I can keep my base colors flat and I can still play around with different lighting scenarios. This allows me flexibility when designing the 3-4 color/lighting variations I need to show the client. Once I get past that stage and the light and colors are approved and locked, that is the only time I merge things together and actually start painting. There are some times where I want to redraw lines even during the render stage. This is purely to help me visualize things easier without worrying about values and color. Also, it's good practice to do lineart. One of my weaknesses... haha hope that makes sense!
@@deivcalviz Yeah i totally get that! I did think that it was something to do with being approved from riot. Just want to say thank you loads for getting back to me, I've only just found your channel but have been playing league of legends for years and your art is so insane its hard to describe in words... You are a huge inspiration for artists everywhere and i hope you never stop making these videos
Just Wow.... Soo... Sooo much time invested into a single piece... Don't you get bored of it... What about time for personal work? Also teach me sensai! This is AWESOME!
Yeah it takes so much time. One way not to get bored is to have mini goals per day. Like 1 day for the face, one day for the upper body, etc. It's actually exciting to see it get slowly finished. What is not fun is if you need to revise something you already did but to be honest I am already used to it. There is plenty of time for personal work BUT usually you would just spend it somwhere else instead of sitting down at the computer.. XD
@@deivcalviz I am a noob... In art... But just like you said I made a single piece in that similar approach... In the digital medium... It was a first for me... Cause I picked up digital art recently... And it sorta worked.. Like making the face, arms etc... Also... Like don't u feel discouraged that you aren't able to do the personal stuff... (Just like the hobby that you surely might have had as a kid...) Or do u only take projects that you love... Also thank you so much for replying and helping me answer my queries..... Lastly HOW THE HELL DOES SOMEONE RENDER?? (Like for every thing I have found a process but when it comes to finishing... The people just say... "Then u render it".... But HOW?... Once again thank you so much for your time and effort .... Edit: I am sure sometimes it might suck to (re)draw under someone else's terms.... This must make u frustrated or not? :)
@@shivajoshi9068 I think with work these ,even if it is just a job, you must love what you do and still take ownership of the piece and be proud of it. If not, then you will get burnt out. In terms of personal art, I still manage to do some from time to time. I mostly post it in my instagram or fb. It's more like my brain is tired of thinking about art than it is about time management. If you want to learn how to render, then study the basics and start copying real world materials. Dont expect to be good just by reading something. You literally need hundreds of hours of practice. Yes it is frustrating but being frustrated is a waste of time so just move on and do it. If you cant accept revisions then this job is not for you. Hope that answers your questions!
@@deivcalviz genuinely... Thank you so much for your wonderful advice.. Also in future... If I need any conceptual help related to art... Can u help me... ( like here in the yt comments) Also I'm now following you on insta as well! Thanks a lot:)
Hey big bro!! I wish that you'll see this comment.I'm an illustration student , please tell me which programs (like photoshop etc) i must master . I want to be a concept artist.Thanks.
Hey! Is there a period in the splash process where you feel very underwhelmed by what you're creating? If so, do you move on and feel better about it when you add the finishing touches? I can never finish a splash because it looks so plain to me I just restart the whole thing
This usually happens in the rough color stage where the painting is fighting with me . I feel like it is there but i cant quite figure out what is missing. Finishing touches is the easiest part. Its the rough color that is one of the hardest parts because balancing things requires lots of trial and error. Other than that, the thumbnail stage is also the most challenging. I think that is happening to you because you just lack research.
@@deivcalviz Thanks for the answer! I probably do lack research but I've looked all over the internet for ways that the splash process is done and found a lot of different results. I've always been confused when I look at the early stages and it's all grayscale. Does every artist use the flats/grayscale/multiply method? Or do they use the gradient map method too? I wish there was a course on this type of stuff, It'd be nice
@@C.Sc20 I see. By research I mean gathering proper references. I take my own photos, download other artworks that look similar, movie screenshots, material samples, etc. All of these help. Its fine if you copy some aspect from each one and mix it into your work. Most artists use colorize or the multiply method. The gradient map one is a bit difficult to use. My next tutorial would be about the 3 ways to color grayscale. Hope i can finish it soon... XD
@@deivcalviz lol I hope you finish the tutorial too. I gather screenshots from shows movies, lol splashes, search up references etc too. I do exactly what you're saying to do but when I get to the lighting stage it looks so...meh and I restart the entire thing. I've never been able to find a good lighting reference for what I want
@@C.Sc20 thanks for elaborating what you mean. I think at that stage what you need is to go back to the basic theories, how contrast works, how values are grouped, composition, lighting logic, color theories... etc. I believe that by going back to those, it will help you bridge the gap on knowing how to use those references. Check out James Gurney's book Color and Light. All the lighting "formulas" are there. Hope that makes sense!
Its impossible to get this same level of quality I did in that time but it is possible to do an acceptable splash art quality in around 15hrs realistically. That will only work for projects that do not need much client involvement or for personal art. Actual marketing illustrations involve a lot of people and lots of planning and research. The fastest league splash i did took around 40+ hrs
@@anryzez622 yup. So what i did was create the card first as a flat rectangle, then convert it to a smart object. Double click to open it. Now you can transform it in the main psd and any change you do on the 2nd opened card psd can be saved and it will update automatically. You can keep duplicating it in the main psd. All will be instances.
I just wanted to offset the direction of the cards a little bit so they are not all pointing to just one vanishing point. By doing this, they will feel more dynamic.
Thanks Michell! For now, wala ako balak mag upload ng free tutorials. Paid tutorials lang ang balak ko in the future. Napaka hirap din gawin mga yun so need ko sila ibenta.

It's a smart object that is instanced inside the PSD. If I change one, everything changes at the same time. :) Basically I made one smart object per card color then duplicate it so that it is instanced.
What's that green line that you used to for reference make all the cards neatly?
I use CSP btw
Might be the lazy nezumi plugin?
@@deivcalviz OH :O i have never thought about using plugins in my life to draw digitally
thanks for this new knowledge! and incredibly fast reply too lmfao
You know its a very long project when the timelapse lasted an hour
Yah you need a lot of patience to pull of something like this... XD
awesome!! love it
Thanks! Glad you like it! :)
hi~ very cool splash art!
46:35 tool information plz T-T perspective line draw
thank you~
Thanks! The plugin is called Lazy Nezumi
I know i'm not suited for this job when i think its's almost finished at minute 10
@@deivcalviz Thats a really useful tip, thanks!!
How did you make the shortcut actions Sir?
But HOW?...
Once again thank you so much for your time and effort
....
( like here in the yt comments)
Also I'm now following you on insta as well! Thanks a lot:)
Hey big bro!! I wish that you'll see this comment.I'm an illustration student , please tell me which programs (like photoshop etc) i must master . I want to be a concept artist.Thanks.
Any program will do! Photoshop, clip studio, even procreate is good. Its the fundamentals that you need to focus on.
Hi Deiv, out of curiosity what program were you using to create the geometric shapes?
Are you talking about the perspective lines? That's a plugin called Lazy Nezumi
What did he use for the 3d pose reference?
I used a Daz3D model. They have free models you can pose. I also use Magic poser for IOS sometimes
Hello, what is the plug-in for your brush? Can you share it? Thank you very much
I use Lazy Nezumi to help my brush strokes. It's a paid plugin you need to buy it.
What's the size of canvas in regular League splashes? (pixel)
4500 x 8000 maximum size... 3938 x 7000 minimum
Also.... Can a splash art be made in a way shorter duration.... Like 10 hours... Or ig 1 house... I was just curious...?
Its impossible to get this same level of quality I did in that time but it is possible to do an acceptable splash art quality in around 15hrs realistically. That will only work for projects that do not need much client involvement or for personal art.
Actual marketing illustrations involve a lot of people and lots of planning and research. The fastest league splash i did took around 40+ hrs
@@deivcalviz huge props to you and you pure dedication and hard work...!
What do you use to draw on?
I used a wacom intuos 3 for most of my artist life but recently I started using an XP Pen artist 24 PRO since the Kalista Artwork. :)
so bad ass
i love it ^^
How you can edit the cards on different window and thats connected to the cards on main window 41:37
Use smart object. Its like a psd inside a psd
@@deivcalviz how to open it.. Just double click or how?
@@anryzez622 yup. So what i did was create the card first as a flat rectangle, then convert it to a smart object. Double click to open it. Now you can transform it in the main psd and any change you do on the 2nd opened card psd can be saved and it will update automatically.
You can keep duplicating it in the main psd. All will be instances.
@@deivcalviz thanks for the lesson
3:48 what does this process called? Is it also part of Perspectives? I wanna learn that 🥺
I just wanted to offset the direction of the cards a little bit so they are not all pointing to just one vanishing point. By doing this, they will feel more dynamic.
sana makapag upload ka po kahit isang art tutorial ng process mo po thank you!
Thanks Michell! For now, wala ako balak mag upload ng free tutorials.
Paid tutorials lang ang balak ko in the future. Napaka hirap din gawin mga yun so need ko sila ibenta.
22:16 how did you do that? To have it open on separate tab??
Sorry for the late reply lol.. but that is a smart object. Its a psd inside a psd. :)
@@deivcalviz and how did you flatten it on to the hat? Is it warp and perspective?
Did you study something else besides art classes in order to achieve this level?
Not sure what you mean.. i take inspiration from everything. Studying the fundamentals is the most important. Also, i use lots of reference like comics, movie screenshots, photography, etc.
How long does it usually take an ilustration like this?
This one is around 80+ hrs. Check out the FAQ in the description for more info. :)
