This time we take a look at my old S54 - which has been damaged quite badly due to a spun rod bearing. We briefly took a ride in my engine builders crazy 1M, and then looked at the "new used" S54 - and what precautionary measures we are going to do to make sure it lasts in the future.

How does this guy see ? It looks like he only sees the gauge cluster.
its all about that low center of gravity :D
@@nyllie6239 yes we know that but how you can see lol
@@driftboi3989 you can feel where you are because your center of gravity is so low ;)
Seeing is obviously overrated
Love these tech videos mate, can't wait for that weapon to be finished! That 1M is just ridiculous!
Thanks mate! I’ll definitely take you for a ride once it’s done!
Frustrating that my German is not more competent.
Thank you for the subtitles.
Appreciate Marcel's forthright lecture.
So illegal.
Much love from Stuttgart
Danke! Es kommen bald mehr. Stay tuned!
I’ve just found your channel 2 hours ago and i’ve already finish the series ! Love your content 🔥
Thanks for the captions...
The positive side is that you will have a solid rebuilt s54. Also, the 1M is insane...👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love your videos! Never apologize for speaking your native tongue. Subtitles were greatly appreciated. Just bought a 97 M3 that I’ll building into a club sport. Videos to come
I saw this series about e46, instant subscribe. Love how simple your videos are.
Thanks for the subtitles, I love these updates so wouldn’t want to miss anything!
The preparation that you're doing to the car is massive, that's how you make a race car !
Keep up with the good work, it can cost some money but i thing you and us don't gonna regret it ;)
This was my first video of yours. Thank you for the subtitles. I learned a lot.
Thank you for the English subtitles and great video as always.
I enjoyed the details on this video, especially on a S54 engine. I look forward to watching this build.
Thank god a new episode. Hang in there bud. Best of luck. :)
OMG The green 1er is BEAUTIFUL!
Your old engine was pretty thrashed, but looks like you have a good replacement to start from. Great to hear you mention the Beisan VANOS upgrade. I put it in my S54. Raj is a legend and he deserves a lot of credit for making the VANOS what it should have been in the first place.
My M3 had the same problem and the engine fired in the end. I got a new engine. I was so happy when my M3 ran again.
Great video. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I hadn't done the rod bearings in my car. Also, oil analysis at every oil change for me lol. So far, perfect.
Hammer Auto! Weiter so!
Great ... looking forward to waching it, i bought my m3 in Bournmouth for 7700gpb in UK and drove it to Poland :) my cylinderhead gasket needed replacement... never drive it home, have it shipped, inspect, and than drive
That's how I drive my bmw, just like Marcell 😂😂😂
What would you replace after sparks and coils? Or what would be checked, for the "just in case"
I don't like people who cut lanes...doesn't matter how good they drive....should always be your priority to stay in your lane on public road.
Apart from that...nice build and a lot of knowledge!
True - i’ve also tried cutting down my lane cutting on public roads
I’m really love that green 1M coupe!!! Could u plz share more details?
I just got an M3 a couple of months back and it's been down because of the SMG gear box, I hope my bearings are okay in the motor I am already broke from the pump replacement 😕
Are you planning on doing something about the oil pump nut? I know that this is more of an m54 problem, but I've heard that it can also get loose on the s54 (since you're going to drive it on track). And another question not related to the engine: Are you going to rebuild the limited slip differential? Are you going to change the lock specs? I've heard that you can use the e92 m3 215mm carrier to get rid of the nasty right wheel banging
hey man love your videos looks like forza in real life what camera do you use?
Nice drivin, but keep safe on the streets.. there are tracks available for this kinda stuff
Great video and I love the content! Is there a reason for not letting Custom Racetec building your engine?
Custom Racetec also outsources their engine builds. In this case i decided to team up with AMT Motorsport for the rebuild as they’re a new and growing business. Everything else is still being done with Custom.
Nice vid. It's interesting to note that in Europe, mechanics tend to work alone in their shops, while americans tend to have groups of workers to do the job. Not meaning one is better than the other, just interesting.
Hi, do you have any advices how to tune e46 (non M, 328i like yours) for good handling, and better feeling? Maybe not exactly what you had in yours, but what do you think should make this car better :) (Suspension, Brakes, Steering upgrades, interior - some rigidity mods, drivetrain, engine, wheels - 17' light OEMs like styling 68, they weight below 10kg one or maybe invest in aftermarket, engine. Basically everything) Im counting on your opinion, because you have expirience in e36,e46 driving :)
Regardless of whether the bearing are "soft" or "hard", the oil is supposed to provide the film that the journal floats upon. I would love to hear from a BMW Diplom-Ingenieur why his employer thinks consumable bearing (and the metal they expel into the rest of the engine) is a responsible and proper solution to running the bearings dry? Is it impossible for BMW to keep the fluid between two pieces of metal that want to tear each other apart?
Also, it is impossible to bias the fresh coolant into the back of the engine, leaving the front to wallow in the airflow that it faces?
It seems that Stephan Papadakis can reliably make 1000 HP from a little 4 cylinder, but BMW has problems with 500 HP from a big 6.
sehr cooles video
the clutch in the 1m seems like a pain with little gain, but feel free to enlighten me
Did he paint his 1m British racing green? Don't think it was a factory option for the 1m. nevertheless beautiful color!
You Are in Roxheim LOL, i live 5km away 👌🏼
Great video 👍 Following. I’m kinda biting my nails nervously as my S54 just turned 82,000 miles which I believe to be on original rod bearings. Should I be nervous 🤷♂️
Awaiting the next video on teardown/rebuild
I would replace them now. There's no reason not to, and you'll feel better every mile you drive afterward knowing that you're safe.
How much is your engine builder charging to rebuild your new engine?
That's a great song at the beginning. What is it? Lo-fi is my kinda music.
Nockenwelle is by far my favourite German word. Enjoy these technical videos a lot! Question, did the bearing only fail on cylinder 3?
Also on 6, but most heavily on 3.
Welche airbox hat der verbaut
It’s a 1m or m135i ?
What caused the engine failure? I thought these engines are pretty stout once the rod bearings are done. Unless they were not? Great job documenting the new build👍
Probably faulty installation by previous owner
@@heelandtoe_ Regardless of the situation this is a must see vid for any E46 M3 owner. In fact it's a great vid for any gen M car owner. I love/loved both my E92 and F82 M3/4 regardless of the money i've spent on them. It's a sickness and I can't help myself.
where is your exige 340 cup
Wow, you guys seem to know alot about BMW engines. I want to buy a car for my family. E91. What engines would you recomment? Are 4 cylinders Diesel/petrol usable or do they make trouble? I drive an e46 with N42 at the moment and it has its problems here and there but its ok. Just want something reliable for daily driving.
With all of the work you are doing to the new engine, why didn’t you rebuild the old one? Seems you are doing most of the work anyway, with the exception of the machining?
Cost. Machining the block and crankshaft would be close to prohibitive. Never pinpointed why it failed. Oil pump and failed head gasket?
Please feature the 370Z also... Not seen one done 'ring spec' it's a forgotten BMW alternative
Please make a Video about the engine rebuild
Video is coming where we rebuild the new engine!
That e46 m3 from UK that supposed to be cheaper there, turn out to money pit, bad luck :/
Looking forward for new videos.
Yes.. very true. Turns out many of them are maintained far worse than advertised. Real bummer, but also a learning experience.
What was the reason for rod bearings failure? Just high mileage? If so how many miles/km? And were you driving it hard on the racetrack when this happened? The reason why I'm asking is because I have a 2002 Convertible M3 with 133K miles and am not sure how soon I need to replace the rod bearings as parts of the preventive maintenance. Being convertible it seems like the car wasn't abused that much but I don't want to take a chance. Fiel dank :)
The reason for the failure is that Bmw builds high reving engines but doesn't use a bigger bearing clearance. You can obviously never say for sure without looking at them, but keep in mind the forces your rod bearings have to take go up with the square of rpm, so if you don't rev the crap out of it all the time they take much less of a beating. The forces at 8000 are twice as high as at 5600 and 4 times as high as at 4000 so you can imagine how brutal track driving is compared to relaxed street use. If you don't have bearing material in the oil and you think the car wasn't thrashed I wouldn't be too worried.
I think it’s so cool seeing actual Germans talk about BMWs in German
Verkauft
What’s the exhaust setup?
Just watch the video...
Hast du deinen Lotus eigentlich noch? Lg
Did you manage to find out the root cause of the damage? That rusty spot in the cylinder wall makes me think it may have started with a coolant leak that contaminated your oil.
We couldn’t quite pin point the exact route. But several things came together. Part of it was faulty installation.
Dude needs a booster seat !
engine was cold :(
I don’t think you need to use focus on your camera because it feels worse than if you would record without focus
Yes, it's really exhausting
To me his 1M looks pretty stock :D haha :*
First boay...
What I would give to own a 1M.
sooo junge hast ein ABOOoooooo
why not just drop in an S62 and call it a day.. 🤙🏼
Uff... Also beim Autofokus läufts...
Marcels driving style is just pathetic and unprofessional.
Crossing the lines in blind corners on public roads - he is gonna kill someone sooner or later :/
Other than that: Nice video, nice 1M, good explanation just the statement that the rod bearing is a wear item is misleading: usually the bearing should never even touch the crankshaft as this is a hydrostatical bearing, so there should always be a separating oil film that it glides on. The brass material is just for dry startup and other "emergency" situations but not a wear item by design like i.e. a brake pad.
Just the S54 and S65 are known for bearing problems, which doesn't make it a designed wear part though.
why does the exhaust sound like a ricer civic
I do appreciate your efforts but fucking hell this S54 is made out of glass. Furthermore, rod bearings are not consumables! Toyota engines will go a million miles on the stock bearings. This engine has a couple of design flaws for sure.
