    Many times I tried to understand past perfect. Sometimes one word can have an effect. When you said "earliest" action, I got it.
    Many thanks Ronnie! You are amazing teacher.

    You're surprisingly charming. I like your dry sense of humor. It's especially refreshing while teaching something as dull as grammar.

    1) What if i wanna say that;
    After I had had a bath, I have watched T.V
    Would it be correct?
    2)Can i say that;
    I had woken up then i have eaten breakfast then i watched T.V
    Would that be correct too ?
    Thanks a lot

    • @noodoo19
      @noodoo19 9 років тому +7

      No, Alp, it's not proper form as you have it written above. It is comprehensible, but awkward, so although you are likely to get your point across, it wouldn't be grammatically correct. Back to your question - you have gone from one action expressed in the _past perfect_, to a connected action expressed in the _present perfect_. The _present perfect_ is used when an action or a state that began to happen at some time in the past, continues into the present, e.g. _I have had this headache for two hours and it only seems to be getting worse._ In this example, the headache came on 2 hours prior to the statement being made, and it persists.
      As Ronnie teaches in the lesson, the action that follows the initial action in the past (eating breakfast, in this case) should be expressed in the _past simple_, and thus the correct structure would be _After I had had a bath, I watched TV._ "Had had", the _past perfect_, expresses an action that began in the past and has ended. The _past simple_ construction that follows, expresses an action that has also been completed, i.e. having watched TV.
      As a final note, and hopefully this won't confuse things (LoL), I personally don't see a problem with expressing the entire answer using the _past simple_ when responding to the following question: Richard, what did you do after work yesterday? _Well, I had a bath, watched some TV, and then went to bed._ Formal writing is, understandably, held to higher standards, but for casual conversation, or colloquial writing, it works just fine. Anyway, there's my 2 cents. Hope it helps.
