I haven't used Red Heart yarn since before you were born. I might have been tempted by this one, but all my favorite You Tube crocheters have tride this yarn, and you have all hated it. Thanks for saving me. My current passion is making scrappy balls from two different but complimentary Lion Brand Mandala Bonus Bundles. I am working with Meowth and Sasquatch. Superb combination! I am making an infinite linen stitch baby blanket for my niece's baby to be, and another larger one for myself.
I’ve seen probably half a dozen yarn UA-camrs try this yarn and not a single one has liked it for making granny squares. They’re like, we’ll make different stuff with it.
This is how I felt when I first used the yarn, even now different colors and lots, I have to use a different hook based on the lot. Typically I can use the same hook for the whole square. I also do 3 chains in the corners until the last two rows then I do two for nearly every square. I have used up 12+ skeins cause I bought 3 of 6 colors. Once I figured it out, I am in love!
I have watched several videos reviewing this yarn. And every one ended the same. It's not worth the constant frogging and redoing every round. No thank you Red Heart !!
Just found your channel and loving it! You kept me company while I wound yarn this afternoon… it was the best. I bought the same colorway of the granny square yarn and have the same opinion… just shoot me. So I made it into a bucket hat. Give that sweet Ruthie a pat for me! 🩵
Shows you how much I know, didn’t even realize it’s supposed to do that lol. I don’t make granny squares either though. Always figured the color changes were random, learn something new every day!
My best guess is they wanted their directions to be proprietary so they have an easier time claiming trademark if another company comes out with something similar in the future, but who knows 🤷🏽♀️ Your cardigan is gorgeous.
I would have done this same. I have had to just pitch out the whole skein of yarns because it just won't work with me. So I stick with my typical yarns now.
I have ASD. i got this yarn knowing that it was so fkn BS. 😂😂😂 Like no 2 ppl crochet the same. Why they thought it was a good idea to make this is beyond me. Im making mine into a diagonal cheveron blanket and a giant granny "hobbit shawl" (i think thats that Secret Yarnery called it) I totally didnt even try to make those squared bec i dont read patterns and i do not crochet they way other ppl do. So i didnt even try. Too tedious 😅 crazy!
I had to do their extra steps following their pattern, and size up to an 8mm hook to get the color changes right. If I use the recommended hook and do it my usual way, I make a granny pentagon to get to color changes right.
I do not even like Red Hearts. It is so rough when using it. Only time I would ever use RHS is if I wanted to do larger plushies because it is more stiff. My go to acrylic yarn is I love this yarn from Hobby Lobby, and the blanket yarns is Loops n Threads baby from Michaels.
There are instructions on the inside of the packaging that you are supposed to use in order for it to come out correctly. I haven't tried this yet but I have seen several UA-camrs and there's definitely a learning curve.
I have watched a bunch of YTrs try to make the granny squares work & only one .. ONE person was able to make it work. I have heard one color blend works better than the others & she had used that color. But so far I haven’t seen anyone else do it without having to rip it out a gazillion times IF they were ever able to do it at all. I would love for whoever tested this yarn to determine the yardage needed for each round make one on video so we could see them make it work in one go.
Crocheting is so personal and tension for each person is so different. I have no idea how they thought this was going to work. I really really wish it did though 😭

I won’t buy any red heart 😂 But most people ended up using it as a self-striping yarn. Everyone has different tension & there are different ways to make granny squares, so bad idea for a yarn all the way around 🙄
I came here from a tiktok! I have seen several videos of this yarn and all of them have put me off from buying it.. I have a very consistent tension and several yters have also said they have great tension and it seems to work for no one.. its annoying that you wont know thats its not gonna fit till the end of the round

The idea is grand however like you said depending on tention..... me I tend to stitch tighter. 😂

Nah I’m just not ever gonna buy it again. I shouldn’t need 3 hooks to make it work. No matter what square it is I don’t see it working.
It was a big frustrating game. Frog and frog some more. Love the colors but it costs more than other yarns.
