Why Uncle Ben Matters (MCU and Spectacular Spider-Man)

    Everybody shares the same opinion about MCU Spider-Man. Despite this, I offer my thoughts on the topic in this video and emphasize the importance of Uncle Ben to Spider-Man’s character. In doing so, I invoke the greatest Spidey cartoon of all time, and one of the plain best Spidey anythings of all time: Spectacular Spider-Man. I hope you enjoy.
    Also I know it seems like I come down pretty hard on MCU Spidey in this video, but I actually really like the portrayal of Peter Parker in Civil War and Homecoming. I definitely have my issues with how Peter is characterized in those movies, but the good far outweighs the bad, in my opinion. Far From Home, though? Yeah, I got more issues there. It honestly feels like so much of what I loved about Peter’s character in Homecoming was walked back or ignored, but maybe you feel differently! If that’s the case, let me know why down in the comments.
    I know I didn’t delve super deep into my analysis of MCU Spidey in this video, as I’ve already reviewed Far From Home and I didn’t want the MCU side of this video to completely overshadow the Spectacular Spider-Man side of this video, so I’ll be happy to continue the discussion down in the comments with you :)
    I’d also like to go on the record and say that Spider-Man is pretty cool. Just, like, in general. And if you decide to attack someone personally for their opinion about Spider-Man--a fictional character meant to unite people--you’re exactly the type of person that Spider-Man would abhor.

      Yeah and I do think it's weird that Cap wasn't really a mentor to Peter at all... like I feel like Cap's and Peter's ideologies line up much better than Tony's and Peter's, but as you put it, the problem isn't who the mentor is, but the fact that that mentor serves as Peter's motivation

      My interpertation for MCU Spider-Man is that Peter views Tony Stark not a replacement for Uncle Ben but as a stand-in for him. Peter sees some of the Uncle Ben in Tony as if he never left.
      While Tony himself isn't perfect compared to Uncle Ben, he is basically testing Peter in order to be better even if it is harsh but Peter's idolization for Tony gets in the way of his maturity.

    I don't remember where I read this sentence, but I think it summarizes the quintessential nature of his stories and character adequately:

      Exactly. That is who Stan Lee wanted teenager Spider-man to be. A guy who has to either finish his homework and get a chance to enter university, or spend the night saving lives. A guy who struggles to decide whether he should spend his weekly allowance on parts for web-shooters, lunch, or to pay the bills. A guy who works for a boss who disrespects him as both Peter and Spider-man. A guy who does not get the girl, and loses his closest friends.
      Spider-man is clearly bad for Peter's life, but he keeps being him because of what Ben Parker taught him.
      Peter's personal sacrifice allows Spider-man to save lives, and he knows it is worth it.

      The second Tony dismissed Vulture as being "below his pay grade", every comic or cartoon version of Peter Parker would have been disgusted and disillusioned. The student/mentor dynamic always falls apart in the comics because Peter is an objectively better person than Tony.

      Well, someone did point out something interesting in an earlier clip. They stated "Basing on the rumors of Garfield and Maguire being in Spider-Man 3, I thought in one way on how they can fix this Uncle Ben situation:
      Yes, MCU peter had uncle ben and he died, which made Peter become Spidey. However, maybe in the MCU version, he and Uncle Ben hadn't a strong relationship and/or didn't have a direct blood connection. That makes Peter sorry and responsible for UB dying and, consequently, becoming SM - but it didn't have the impact it had in other versions of Peter.
      Then Spider-Man 3 comes out and we get to see the previous live-action peters. Throughout the movie, Peter understands the responsibilities of being Spiderman by looking at how AG and TM act as Spidey's. At the end of the movie, MCU peter learns the famous spiderman sentence (With great powers, comes great responsibilities) and, after the villain loses/dies and the other Spideys go away, Peter is a new Spiderman, one that, after so long having the mantle, now finally understands his responsibilities as Spiderman (this could appear on screen like a situation of Peter starting to ignore some crime happening close to him, but quickly going to action to be the friendly neighbor)." - Pedro Maragon

    I think the main problem with this discussion is that, for some reason, people seem to think we want to see Uncle Ben die again. We don't. We've seen it enough. What we want to see is how his death truly impacts him. All it takes is a mention of the guy and how that affects Peter's choice's. I feel like Homecoming kinda tried to insinuate that with the whole "Just looking out for the little guy." Line, but it doesn't have the same affect. We don't need the "with great power" line, but just something from the man that is supposed to help push Peter to keep saving people.

    SPOILERS FOR NO WAY HOME:
    Believe it or not, No Way Home hard counters all of these issues. The Homecoming trilogy acts as the origin story for Spider-Man. The MCU version of the story is a bit out of order, since Peter doesn't lose anyone super important until the third movie, but it helps clarify why he acts the way he does in Far From Home. He still wants to help people, but he doesn't view it as his responsibility until the end of No Way Home. Aunt May's death and dying speech acts as the Uncle Ben moment for the MCU, and while it may be considered nontraditional or not comic book accurate, I feel it plays an important part in the story and feels even more traumatic, given we had time to become attached to Aunt May as a character before she died.

    My theory is that Peter did lose Ben, but the impact Peter suffered was so bad, it got to the point that Peter couldn't mention Ben by name because the pain of the memory of losing him would be too much. It's like he locked it up in a vault inside his heart. It would explain why he is clearly referring Ben at some points, but at the same time, explaining why he can't just say Ben's name out loud.
    EDIT: Or maybe Ben died when Peter was very young. I don't know

      He referenced uncle Ben's death in captain america civil war. And did the whole "with great power comes great responsibility" talk with Tony. He clearly understands and it shows how uncle Ben teached him responsibility. In far from home however he wanted to stay away from everything after everything he saw in endgame and infinity war. I too would try to do the same. Yet the movie and characters remind him again of that lesson uncle Ben told him.

But I feel like you finally explained what was missing unlike high top films (who makes good videos most the time). Thank you, anyone can say what they want about the old Spider-Man movies, they worked because they identified who Spider-Man was, who Peter Parker was, and why key moments in his life should be utilized in telling his hero story. Tony Stark is no Ben Parker, MJ is no Mary Jane Watson, and saying "oh, he's a teenager" doesn't take away the responsibility of playing the role of Spider-Man. These people and things are all important to understand both Spider-Man and Peter Parker, he's a flawed hero, and shouldn't be shoehorned into the shadow of Tony Stark to fit the MCU movies. I think the worst thing they could have ever done was deciding to reveal Spider-Man's identity because peaking does exist, and there's nowhere to go once you hit the ceiling.

Maybe having Peter just whispering the name *Ben* could be a way for Tom Holland's spider man to stop and think about the situation he's in. I really disagree with this idea that Ben has to be present for Spider-Man to become a hero. The assumption is being made that every Peter Parker is the same, had the same personality, and needs the same motivators. Couldn't any loss (if written well) be as impactful to Peter as Ben?

    • @lamario
      @lamario 2 роки тому +1

      @Stephen O'Brien That's my point. Anything can serve as that moral compass. People are attached to the idea that it MUST be been because that's who is been in most cases. Anything can serve as his moral compass or his motivator for becoming a hero. I appreciate the fact that they've only mentioned Ben twice in the MCU Spider-Man, and the people in his life has been his guiding light.

    • @lamario
      @lamario 2 роки тому +1

      @Stephen O'Brien But what makes Spider-Man special isn't who made him a hero, but the fact that he becomes one. People are stuck to this cannon for no reason besides that's how it was first done, and that assumes there isn't a better or more clever way to do it. The "mythos" you mentioned was thrown out the window in 1971 when the multiverse was introduced. If there was a world where Ben exists (which has been presented dozens of dozens of times), there also has to be a world where he doesn't (which is less often explored). It can now be completely cannon that Ben is not even a part of Peter's worldview.
      I'm saying this as a 35 year old man who grew up with every multi-media version of Spider-Man I consumed telling me the same story, until I read a comic that told it differently, and I still appreciated that Spider-Man's struggle. Why are Spider-Man fans insisting on skinning the same cat the same way when there are other methods and other cats to be skinned?

    • @lamario
      @lamario 2 роки тому

      @Stephen O'Brien So then you care about the individual elements and not the end result? Ben, Peter, May, MJ are all things that have been replaced because while they may be important to some versions of Spider-Man, they don't make up the idea of who Spider-Man is. The multiverse means that not every version of a superhero IS the same, that's there point, it allows them to tell different stories while maintaining certain elements of the hero. Peter Parker is not the same as Miles Morales, Ben Riley, Brian, Mac, Mattie, Junie, etc, and they should all have different stories and different motivations for becoming heroes. And inside of that, different versions of Peter should also have different motivators.
      Remember, Spider-Man is the hero, Peter or whoever else they use is just a plot device. The entity who swings around the city with super strength, sticking to surfaces, with spider-sense and shooting webs is Spider-Man. A plot device with powers in a suit. You can change out the plot device and still have Spider-Man.

    • @lamario
      @lamario 2 роки тому

      @Stephen O'Brien Oh, and that was your first time mentioning the multiverse, so how did you previously point out that Ben is still important even though there is a multiverse?

    • @lamario
      @lamario 2 роки тому

      @Stephen O'Brien Alluding to and mentioning are very different things. And you're right, all those individual elements make up something that is greater than the sum of it's parts. A car is still a car even if it uses different parts than another car. There needs to be an engine, wheels, and a steering method for it to be a car, regardless of the type or quality of of frame that houses those elements.
      For Spider-Man to be Spider-Man he simply needs to have similar powers as what we know as Spider-Man, and a story to tell. Doesn't even have to be a hero, Spider-Man has been a villain plenty of times.
      Maybe this is why we don't see eye to eye. The multiverse isn't a 'what if', it's a 'but elsewhere'. It runs alongside what you think of as "main", not just as an offshoot. There is no longer a "main mythos", it's all just what the "camera" is currently being pointed at. You're used to the Spider-Man you grew up with and his story, but all the while, there have been all these other ones that you weren't aware of. There's all these other stories to be told, but Spider-Man fans believe the only true story that should be told, is the one they are used to.

    They introduced Spider-Man in the MCU, but only in the bedroom scene during Civil War, when Peter is talking about helping the people that get over looked by the Avengers, because he feels responsible because he has the power to do so. He's been Spider-Man for 6 months up to that point and he would love to do something like use his new strength and speed to be on a football team, but he couldn't before so it wouldn't be right to do so now. Even implied something happened prior that Peter could've prevented but didn't, and now he has to be Spider-Man to make up for it.
    Spider-Man has yet to appear in the MCU films since, because responsibility and self sacrifice fell to the wayside in order to feel validation by "Mister Stark" and defending his legacy. So happy that Spider-Man made his long awaited second appearance in the MCU during No Way Home.

    Why i love mcu spider-man for me he's more realistic. Im 16 also and every time i see peter make a decision in the movies i agree with it and could see myself doing the same. I also understand and connect with his pain more than the other spider men.
    Like how he was sadden about the death of iron man. See for me tony being peters 2 uncle ben works for me. Uncle ben will always be important to peter, he is why peter is Spiderman. Tony is peters inspiration to want to do more and help more.
    Tony makes peter want to try harder so he can save more lives and prevent more deaths so that less uncle ben moments happen. "When you can do the things i can but you dont bad things happen cause of you".
    Also mcu peter cares more about people than the other spidermen in my opinion. See toms peter is given so many opportunitys to look the other way.
    Like in homecoming he could have done what tony said and stop going after vulture he didnt. Vulture told peter to look away and have fun with his daughter he didnt. In infinity war he could have looked away when Maw attacked he didnt. Also tony sent him back to Earth but peter still choose to go to space and fight thanos.
    Yes i get that in far from home he was more reluctant to help nick but i feel like he was more justified in doing so. He died for 5 years, watched tony die, and was brought back into a world were everything moved on thats not an easy thing i assume.
    Even then he still chose to fight the elementals. He chose to tell Nick about mysterio. And finally he chose to go back and stop mysterio for good.
    I will admit that mcu peter should have more consequences, but i feel like the whole world knowing his identity is a step in the right direction.
    Theres alot more i can say but this comments long enough. I do wanna here some thoughts though i wanna here peoples arguments or if people agree with me.

    Everything about this vid, and some of the comments I read are straight out of my brain. I've said this myself and it's the main reasons I don't like the MCU Spider-Man. And him constantly having his mask off in front of EVERYONE. They force this father son thing on us, and make it all that Peter seems to care about; as well as making him borderline ADD. People try to defend it saying he's young, but when every other interpretation of the character is close to what he's supposed to be I just can't accept that. I feel like Peter in CW was his best even though he wasn't in there very long. We get hints at his backstory, and Uncle Ben when Peter says "when you can do the things I can and you don''t and the bad things happen they happen because of you" then Tony says so you're just looking out for the little guy, and Peter stutters his response saying "yeah that's it". To me that was them acknowledging Uncle Ben's death, but Peter just couldn't talk about it. None of this exists in his solo movies, and they suffer because of it.
