Dr. Eades is a national treasure. I’m working on some biochemistry this year and look forward to actually understanding each step that he outlined in this lecture.
On eating carbs (sugar and/or starch) and still being in keto: like everything else, how well that works depends on a multitude of factors. A high carb diet that allows people to go into ketosis MUST be SEVERELY restricted in total caloric intake. Except in situations of war, famine, etc most people would find this extremely difficult to stick to, even for a day. Without fat, a body running on carbs demands more carbs throughout the day. Fat, on the other hand, makes us feel full and satisfied. Eating a diet of just potatoes, as Eades mentions, and being in ketosis requires eating fewer calories than we need. This is calorie restriction, the model that most weight loss diets over the past 60+ years has been based on - and has failed miserably. While a very few people can tolerate a high carb low fat diet, the vast majority of people who managed to lose weight on a high carb diet with restricted intake regain the weight - and often gain more. This led to the 'yo-yo' cycle of weight loss followed by weight gain that many people have repeated over and over. Generally speaking, for people who are highly carb sensitive, even a small amount of carbs will tend to kick them out of ketosis, or prevent them from going into ketosis. Certainly, we can all benefit from avoiding highy processed packaged foods - which are usually high in sugars/starches, and often contain added chemicals, and processed seed oils (aka 'vegetable' oil).
Starvation diets are NOT healthy. People find it "extremely difficult" to stick to them, because if you don't eat more, you will eventually DIE. Your body is trying to save your life. That's why you start binging or get some other type of eating disorder. The only way to recover from starvation is to eat LOTS of food. Extra vitamins won't work. This has been known since the 1940s and the Minnesota Starvation Experiment.
Wow. Yeah, I remember Miss Adele Davis quoting this "fat needs carbs" as gospel. We know better now, bless her sincere heart. She did a lot for us and the world. She was told ketones were poison. We now know we don't need carbs to burn fat. Ketones are our natural food.
NOTE: Whoever films speakers who have visual aides, PLEASE show the slides or other visual materials the speaker is presenting MOST of the time, with just an occasional shot of a few minutes of the speaker. It is annoying to have to stop the video to be able to really see what the speaker is talking about. As the speaker discusses their material, it is useful to be able to view the slides at lengthh. Of course, if the speaker uses gestures to help illustrate their points, or has no slides or other visual aids, that is a different situation. That said - THAN K YOU to Low Carb Down Under for the posts!! Wonderful material!
Mike, A great talk. When I was taking cell biology 1974 the final exam question was pick one of the 4 competing hypotheses for the mechanism of electron transport and defend it. I picked the proton concentration gradient mechanism. It is amazing to me how much of what I was taught as “settled science” was just plain wrong. I was quite fortunate in that my research director taught to believe about 10% of what you are told, 50% of what is in the literature and only 75% of what you see with your own eyes. That advice served me well. By the way the book you recommend in your talk is $140!
I've been on a low carb diet for quite some time, workout in the morning, and started to run out of energy when my weights were getting heavy. I added rice back in for energy, but Dr. Eades' portion on the ATP cycle has been wondering if I really should increase my protein intake late in the day instead to have energy for weight lifting in the morning.
I am deeply torn, completely supporting the freedoms granted by the U.S. Constitution protecting speech and expression, but often find myself fantasizing about the arrest and prosecution of people, media, and groups who overtly lie to the People.
A great talk. I still remember when I first began work at Downstate Medical Center being told that fats burn in the flame of carbohydrate. I could not figure out what it could mean. Of course, when I asked the people who said that, they didn't know what it means. Mike clearly showed what it means: nothing, or more optimistically a mistaken idea in the history of medicine -- I didn't know that that's were it came from. Great talk. One minor point: I don't think that the cholesterol story is right. There are two HMG-CoA synthases. Only the liver has mitochondrial HMG-CoA synthase to make ketone bodies. All cells have cytosolic HMG-CoA synthase to make cholesterol. I could be wrong on this but I don't think statins affect ketone body synthesis and I don't think ketosis effects cholesterol directly. I think cholesterol may go up in the liver because of the influx of fatty acids and hence acetyl-CoA. May go up in other tissues because of ketone bodies which essentially supply acetyl-CoA. (I don't think that you indicated explicitly that basically ketone bodies supply acetyl-CoA from the liver to the tissues). Ha. The flame of carbohydrate.
When people can’t drink milk, they don’t blame milk-they just say they’re lactose intolerant. So why blame carbs? Why not simply say you’re carb intolerant?
Im a high carb high fat advocate and Coach here in nyc...LOVE THE DR!!! I always have an open mind and yes he is correct FAT ACTUALLY ALWAYS BURNS! in the flame of carbs fats and proteins! agreed!
Shitty explaination 10:04 He makes it seem as statins would block a 2 conversation chain to cholesterol. If it was that simple I would be on statins right now for having very high cholesterole on keto. Would have loved to know why some create more cholesterol.
1600 calories is a starvation diet? I eat one meal per day and have had 1600 calorie days. Granted, mostly fat. I guess I should be skinny any day now :)
I think he was emphasizing that it was In the SOUTH of England so as far away from Scotland and as far away from Edinburgh as he could get. There are people who have never traveled to England who don't know where Cornwall is so he clarified that.
This is pretty inaccurate biochemistry. In humans, OAA is not formed de novo when the Acetyl group of Acetyl CoA is Oxidized and Acetyl CoA's entry into the Krebs Cycle is dependent on the availability of OAA from pyruvate. Only plants have the enzymes to convert two the two carbons from Acetyl CoA into OAA.
Such an amazing lecture!!
My take away is, "fat will burn in the presence of fat as energy"....LOL
You’ve given a few. Good job Doc.
You're a clown.
I wish there were more videos from this guy
Search his name on UA-cam, there are more videos of him.
Dr. M. Eades talk entitled 'Paleopathology and the Origins of the Paleo Diet' is particularly interesting. It is available on UA-cam.
Outstanding. Will definitely look for more of these videos from Dr. Eades.

I think you just reiterated the good doctors point but in a far wordier way

He never said it's a good idea or that anyone should do it... He only said it was technically possible.

Thank goodness that there are such clever people willing to share

Well said. As a leak, loving to research health, I stumble on this truth almost every day of my life
Thank you,I really enjoyed this.
An excellent presentation. Thank you for posting.

This guy is good. gotta read up on Peter Mitchell.

@@stevenlindhorst7579 It's malpractice.

So was Hans Krebs “Krebs Cycle” wring? Of course it wasn’t.
This is a long winded way to say if you eat real food you won't be hungry.
Not just real food, but real food that wasn't hybridized to yield lots of sugar like most fruits and probably all grains.

Me too, mine is double what it should be and there's nothing wrong with me apart from that.

Is this why the potato saved Ireland and the Irish from total annilation?

Nice belly.
6:24 "... he bought a mansion in Cornwall ... the southern part of England". I suppose Scotland is the northern part of England then?
Scotland isn't any part of England ;)
Cornwall is a part of England. Scotland is separate country.

I wish more fat people can teach me how to not be fat.
Zero Carb Health dot com This is how to get healthy and eventually not be fat without effort of starvation or exercise. Enjoy.
