"Don't you ever judge me." | What Cazador did to Astarion and Astarion's Empathy | BG3 ACT 3 SPOILER

  • You get this scene when the camp gets attacked by his siblings after encountering them at the flophouse in Act 3. This particular dialogue triggers if you choose to say nothing during their argument, they will reveal that Astarion was the 'weakest' because he never fought back. Truth was that he did fight back, way before his other siblings even existed and he paid the price as he explains here so the fight in him was gone by the time the others came around.

      @@kstar1489 yes, he is but I meant more like, it's too much to expect it of him. It's cruel to expect him to be kind and nice after everything he went through.
      Through this game I have learnt that we assert a lot of pressure on everyone to be nice because it benefits us as social beings but for some who have been through so much, it is probably too much to ask and expect. People should be nice, yeah, but we shouldn't just expect that of them considering we don't know what they've been through nor should we judge them to be the ultimate evil because we have seen like 1% of their entire life and not the other 99%. Astarion used to be decent until his niceness was snuffed away from him.

    Astarion was never a bad person. It's just that between the Gods never answering his prayers of being saved, or any adventuring heroes rescuing him, and Cazador punishing him for having a conscience and acting on it, Astarion has zero motivation or reason to be heroic or selfless without getting anything in return. It fully explains why at the tiefling party he hates being treated as a hero.

    His story is awful and encapsulates everything Cazador forced him through. He was not only made to suffer in complete isolation, but any attempt at companionship was punished. He says this was in his first decade of slavery, implying that he had already been a vampire for a few years. Astarion had already endured years of being tortured by Cazador, but still disobeyed him in the hopes to save a near stranger.
    Astarion did give up, but only after one of the cruelest punishments you could inflict on somebody, especially given his trauma of digging himself out of his own grave. And then he survived another 160 years after this. It's a testament to his strength that he was able to hold out even as long as he did, and that he had any empathy left by the time he escaped Cazador for good.

    Truly I cannot fathom how people encounter scenes like this and still believe that the Ascension route is his ideal ending… Like sure Cazador suffers more but so do all those innocent people, many of which Astarion was forced to lure back to him in the first place. He also does not allow himself any moments to express emotional vulnerability (especially indicated by how he can barely stand to hear the name Cazador without deflecting or lashing out while Spawn Astarion will fully admit that he wanted to be just like him for a moment) and as a whole it’s a process that denies him any opportunity of introspection, self-acceptance and healing, in favour of completely detaching himself from the clear guilt he once felt and attaching his own self-worth entirely to the power and control he wields. It earnestly does feel as if him is essentially trapping himself in a prison of his own making

    • @stars-and-clouds
      @stars-and-clouds  5 місяців тому +6

      Exactly. Very well said. I never understood why most people who ascends Astarion wants to justify their actions as the right one for some reason.
      I can't help but feel that the people who ascend him have the exact mindset Astarion does and that is not healthy for him. Irl, they'd be called enablers.
      Seeing him close himself off worse than he was at the beginning of the game would break my heart. All that work for nothing. From a gameplay pov, you basically reset all your progress with Astarion if you ascend him, it's like deleting your romance progress from your save lmao.

    • @saribeepo.o5111
      @saribeepo.o5111 4 місяці тому +1

      -_- because some people actually think? I mean look, I could argue either way to be honest, but... really? you don't think they suffer feeling the constant hunger? The first thing Ascended Astarion notices isn't how powerful he is, it's that he doesn't feel like he's constantly starving. But you know, keep telling yourself that the actual evil choice of releasing them into the Underdark is the right answer.
      The truth is, they need to die (and if you choose that without ascension its not treated as evil), because the game doesn't allow for a gradual rehab to safely turn the ones that can be set free free. Now mind you, in my first good playthrough I did release them into the Underdark, but it was a struggle, only assisted because I had a Drow Durge (still isn't his right to release them but at least it's HIS home he's wrecking and not someone else's ), and planned to go to the Underdark with Astarion to clean the mess he made up. I also had to head cannon that once they get it all sorted out for the spawn, that would give Astarion time to chime in on what he'd rather do, because it actually sounds like being adventurers together was what he would have rather done (but he's still not confident in being the one to say what he wants rather than checking in with Durge).
      So, if they need to die, and if we stop trying to force this to be a 'cycle of abuse' narrative (which is clearly is not when you look at the facts), it's easy to see why, if they have to die, it obviously makes sense for some use to come of it. Imagine telling victims you were going to make them go through the pain of the trial, but oh, it would be evil for someone to benefit from your suffering, so we're not going to use this to protect other victims. We just want to make sure we make you go through what's the best thing for society. That's essentially the argument about ascension being morally wrong. Now, one could argue it might not be the best path for Astarion, but that's not the same discussion as it 'making him evil' (which it certainly doesn't).

      @saribeepo.o5111 Treating your partner like property, not allowing them to leave, and guiltripping them for even trying is pretty cut and dry abuser behavior... like it's totally okay to enjoy both sides of the story or even the darker side of the story, but the references to cycles of abuse are not subtext - he says it outright.
      He admits that he wanted to become Cazador in that deciding moment. Granted he's not exactly like Cazador - he's practically speaking almost more Lestat-like - Okay when things are going his way, but terrifying when they aren't. ( perhaps he falls somewhere between the two with his love for making you debase yourself for him) The way that he is "like Cazador" is the way that he is obsessed with "power over people" even if he's not as overtly sadistic about it.
      Enjoy your toxic character, he's fictional, he can't hurt you or me or anyone else. If you don't want to think about it in terms of abuse dynamics, and just want to abstractly enjoy the vibes, that is totally reasonable and fine, but trying to rationalize it into the ground isn't really helpful.

      I will admit, I thoroughly enjoyed turning everyone (left) into their worst selves. We destroyed the world together - it was certainly something. And then I backed all the way back to the ascension choice and redeemed everyone I could. It was really satisfying to take the same character, my same Durge, and take the story all the way to hell and back 😁

      @@coloraddiction except he does allow the PC to leave, the PC can go with Karlach to Averrnus with no problem. There's also no evidence of him treating the PC like property, other than emphasizing how the PC is 'his'. That is, in fact the normal way it has always been understood between a couple, as we should remember that most people are NOT alright with poly relations.
      He furthermore let's the PC dictate the course of their future, always accredits success as being both theirs, and speaks of them as being a united pair. He not only allows, but supports the PC in his/her desires to seize their own power, and allows a semi-open relationship. This is not how one treats property. His whole thing about obedience is all bark and no bite.
      There is then the other element that this debate often neglects. They are, in fact bonded, and Astarion says just as much before turning the PC. Despite some being in denial, I've seen consistent reference to Dnd lore (with a cited source from E2) that points to the PC being made a 'vampire bride', not a spawn. In this case, the PC's well-being is tied to Astarion, such that he/she could be used against him. That's not to say what he does is good. He should trust the PC with this information, which I suspect would satisfy most people who forget the importance of the in game setting (if the damn kiss scenes were fixed). However, these are the same insecurities Astarion has always had (and likely has even if one goes with the spawn ending). They need to be worked through, wether the PC enjoys their dynamic (and wants it to continue) or not. However, that's not the same as being abusive, and it sure as hell is no where even close to what Cazador was and did.

    My heart always breaks for Astarion. He has such a good heart, underneath all the bs he's built up to hide his pain. He's kind. And loving.
    On another note: we can find out Astarion isn't the only person who starved for a year in Cazador's Palace. The other being Cazador's niece, Amanita, who it is implied may have been a true vampire, not a Spawn, considering she fought him every step of the process lol. She refused to drink human blood after her transformation and locked herself in the attic for a year, until she finally relented to drink. Honestly there are some interesting implications with her, considering she mentions other family members: a grandmother, and cousins among them (Astarion does mention being a slave to the Szarr Family, not just Cazador,) and some sketchy "Family Rites" that Amanita would have no part of, but mentions she was forced to become a vampire during them (honestly it sounds like she may have been intended as a Vampire Bride? Super sketchy considering *she was THIRTEEN* ). I've seen a few people headcanon that she killed the other members of her family since they never appear or get mentioned outside of her notes. She also cannot be found in Cazador's Palace, alive or dead. But we know she wrote books, including books on vampirism! Fascinatingly there is only one place this little girl vampire is mentioned outside of Cazador's: Raphael's House of Hope. He has a copy of her book on vampiric illnesses.

      @@ComedyLoverGirl No... we need to put this to rest because this is the exact misconception that has people buy into the BS that Astarion becomes Cazador if he ascends.
      It SOUNDS like Cazador had a similar experience to Astarion, but he didn't at all. If you pay attention to what you learn from the skull of Cazador's former master, everything he went through was clearly done to TRAIN him to become the head of the family. You need only remember that his master has to be willing to allow him to drink his blood to become a full vampire to know this, but then take into account why he gets punished. He gets punished for showing weakness when he turns to a friend not because his master wanted him to sacrifice the friend, but because he was being taught that in vampiric society relying on such attachments to peers will get him killed. The second lesson shows us he is punished, not for trying to kill his master, but for failing to kill his master (who must have already given him full vampire status by that point). When he finally manages to kill his master it isn't through plotting it is part of a vampiric right, and they share a laugh. It is Cazador who dishonors the tradition, by disrespecting his master's remains. Which, I can't help but imagine is why he makes a point to stick around until he can ensure the true nature of his rules, which is to groom the next lord, are passed along. It wasn't until Cazador made a mockery of the lessons that he had a way to know he chose the wrong man for the job (as later proven by Cazador's actions as head of the family).
      Cazador on the other hand has no intention of letting his spawn become full vampires. In fact, he doesn't even intend for them to be spawn, that is merely their place holder while he gathers enough to perform the ritual. He goes out of his way to torture them when he actually has no reason to do so. Consider, he only needed two things for them before sacrificing them. 1. gather more spawn which they could have been coaxed or forced to do if he treated them well. 2. have the scars caved into their flesh. This would have been one single night of suffering out of Astarion's 200 years, and had he done something to make it hurt less, he wouldn't have needed to take as long correcting mistakes.
      when taking into account the nature of vampiric society, and what it takes to survive in it; there is no cycle of abuse here, and certainly Astarion, at no point does anything even remotely like what Cazador or his master did. Take out the goofy Tav/Durge faces during the kissing scenes and there's 0 reason for anyone to say anything against him. Not even past his first day, and Astarion, while still high off his new powers already talks about protecting his 'children' (ie the spawn he will no doubt turn, because if he doesn't establish himself other vampires WILL come for what he has).

And when Sebastion asked how long he's been in there, Astarion said "170 years, you were one of my first" I have wondered for a while if the "200 years" is rounded in some way because it's easier and makes a stronger point than like 183 years or what not. I also maybe just want to know more about the Sebastian story. When Sebastian says "My name sounded like music on his tongue" (that's when Tav was just talking to him, and then when Astarion is there he says "My name sounded like a lyric on your tongue") I was so saddened but also inspired but that line. I'm probably reaching lol but still. :P and I mean, who's to say how fully accurate his memories are of the time? being abused and locked away for whatever amount of time, would get difficult to keep track of.
