Hi Laura! I've been starting seeds on and off (off depending on kitties who want to eat them!) for 25 years, and there is NOTHING like seeing the little bent necks of the emerging seedlings just coming out of the soil. It never gets old!

Laura, I cannot thank you enough for this video. I grew tomatoes for the first time last year in pots. The out come was good...it could have been better. I did prune my plants after watching your video and the fruit production took off at that point, some of my fruit suffered from bottom rot. Oh well.
This season will be different. I have saved this and the pruning video to my Zone 3 folder (along with others that have zone 3 perennials) and I will be growing tomatoes like PRO!🙂🙂🙂🤗🤗

@@therapywithisabel Hi Isabel. It's actually quite simple. Every video that Laura and Aaron produce it there is anything I want to replicate or plant that pertains to my Zone 3 climate I click the save button on the video and create a folder and name the folder(s). This way I have my plan for this summer.

I think I always ignored that because I didn't know what that meant. 🥴 Thanks for teaching this 58 year old something new today and everyday I watch your videos. You have a precious gift. I’m anxious to see the pruning stage of tomatoes. In all my years I’ve never seen or done this. I love the idea, and it just makes sense for more production. I have my seeds under a grow light that has two arms lighting a tray on each side, as I have no room for a complete setup, and place them sporadically about the house. I did not know about the heat pad, that is brilliant! I grew up just using a heat lamp for them. It’s so refreshing to go back to basics because over time we forget; having done it for so long you sometimes do your own thing which isn’t always the right thing. 🥴😂

Laura, I have question and a comment. Question: I seem to recall sometime in the past you explained you water in the plant room with a garden hose running up the wall and coming in through a window. Surely you're not doing that in winter! Do you have that garden hose you moistened the bowl of soil with hooked up to a different system? Comment: When I sow seeds into cells, I use a bamboo skewer, moisten the tip, touch a seed in my hand and touch the soil in the cell. It transfers beautifully and efficiently! My wife and I love all your videos and feel like we've had the best visit with a good friend after watching them. Plus, we learn a ton and get so inspired! Oh, looks like I had more than one comment. ;) Thank You!!!

Very exciting video! Totally agree that planting from seed gives more varieties to choose from. I need to wait till end of March beginning of April before I plant 🌱. Something I learned last year is not to plant indoors too early. My plants were blooming indoors, approximately 2 to 3 weeks before it was safe to plant 🌱 outside in the garden. Always learning from you and others, great to get tips and try new things

I have never planted that many seeds and I learned to appreciate which seed companies have more of the useful info on the package. It takes time to look up planting depths on line.

Hi Laura, just curious, I've been seeing a lot of alternatives to using plastic seed starting kits, primarily the pots or cells in an effort to reduce plastic and also to save money. I have several different types of plastic seed starting trays, pots, cells, etc. and been using them and reusing them for years. The alternatives I've seen are soil blocks using both plastic and wooden trays to hold the blocks, newspaper formed into the shape of cells, etc. My question is have you seen these used and would you consider doing a video on alternatives to plastic? Thanks!

You talked about using “these ones” (LOL) as container specimens, just wondering how your blueberries did last year. I’m wanting to try that out this year myself, and I don’t think you ever updated us on that blueberry container. Happy gardening! 🤗

I heard that your supposed to pinch back tomatoes as a seedling to better branching, but if it's determinate should you if they're not supposed to be pruned?

Question-When do you put water in the bottom tray? When you plant the seeds or when you see them pop up through the soil?
Thank you for all your wonderful videos. They are so educational and inspiring.

Can you do a video on growing seeds indoors in an economical way? Some of the grow lights can be really expensive.. Would a clamp light work instead?

    • @mariafolch8067
      @mariafolch8067 4 роки тому +7

I put mine close to a south east window where they get intense light for 6 hours and they do fine. I use regular food containers to seed them and put them inside a plastic bag, which I blow in order to make a dome, zip close it and wait until the seedlings pop up to take the bag out and let them finish growing free.

Valerie Strickler I bought a $12 grow bulb at Lowe’s for a clamp light. It’s good for one tray. Haven’t tried on seeds yet. Good luck!

I purchased a two strip grow light from amazon for about £16 that is electric, clamps onto a surface and is doing great for my seed starting. I was concerned about electricity efficiency but it hasn’t had a negative impact so far. Hope this helps and good luck 🙂

Luke Marion at MIGardener just did a good video on UA-cam (2/6) about the different options and economies of buying them. I start a lot of seeds and use a 4-shelf set-up with cfl shop lights that I bought at Costco and it has worked great for 5 years. Just be careful to get the right lumens and kelvin. The price of LEDs has come down during that time, so some may be more affordable now.

Will you be doing this type of video for other vegetables you plan on planting in your garden - like cucumbers, bell peppers, squash, etc?

Yeah, that might be interesting: seeing how they catalog their videos. Are they cataloged with keywords or are entire segments in a database with video id numbers and time-stamps? Well, for the nerdy, dorky programmy people like me but I'm not sure the gardeners who watch this channel would have an appreciation (or interest) for it.

She mentioned in a recent video that she has a guy named Kevin help with editing. If he's a pro I wouldn't be surprised if he had some tagging or cataloguing system

To anyone who is watching this video and is really new to starting seeds, please understand you absolutely DO NOT need a heating mat and a grow light, neither do you need a sprayer. Chances are if you are starting from seed, you have a very low budget for whatever you want to grow. If you just put your seeds in a warm and bright place they will be totally fine. I know when I was super new to gardening, I was very intimidated and bummed out by the fact that i don't have equipment or resources to give my seeds the best chances. 4 years in and I can tell you, while those kind of things are nice to have and make it easier on you, they are an extra and are not a necessity. Go and put your seeds in the dirt and keep them warm, well lit and moist and you will for sure be fine. Good luck.

I have yet to try growing any vegetables, because I'm scared of all the disease and pests and chaos that come along with that. Could you please do a video on those issues?
I don't eat tomatoes any more, since my yayà (grandma) got too old and stopped growing them in her garden (and then passed away...), because no purchased tomato ever tastes like those...
    Have a wonderful weekend!! 😊

Hi Laura, thanks for the tip in buying a micro grow light kit. I live in the UK and I've just found from a garden supply store over here. Should help start my tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, chillies....oh I could go on forever. Anyway, thanks again for the tip and for brilliant videos. x
