Evergreen memories of Talat Saheb
Some thirty years ago while shopping for some old Hindi songs along Serangoon Road in Singapore, I bumped into a 60-year-old French musician who was teaching music to teenagers in the Netherlands. He was sharing how he became interested in Hindi music after listening to Hindi songs of the 1940s up to the late 1960s. He was mentioning musician Naushad Saab and the legendary playback singers Rafi, Mukesh, Mannaday, Hemant Kumar and Talat Mahmood as among the most talented singers who had perfect breath control and voice modulation. Their recorded songs along with the soothing music provide effective therapy for people in distress. In 1990, the musician demonstrated his experiments to some young musicians in the presence of two doctors in a private nursing home in Singapore. I was there to witness the event. It was simply astonishing.
