- Prabodh Chandra Dey (1st May 1919 - 24th October 2013) better known by his nickname Manna Dey, was a playback singer in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Assamese films. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007. Along with Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh he was a part of Indian film playback music industry. He is rated as the best classical singer among all singers of Hindi film music, though he sang various types of songs from pop to folk. He has recorded more than 3500 songs over the course of his career.

Manna Dey was one of those Jewels in Indian music. He was probably one of the very few complete singers, not just a playback singer. His expertise in classical music and powerful voice made him unique in the classical-based film songs which couldn't be matched by till today. In Bengali modern songs and film songs he is arguably the best by virtue of his many versatile and super hits songs. A singer who can sing so comfortably and play with his voice easily at all range of notes for five decades speaks a lot about the great musical maestro. He is equally at ease with Geet, Ghazal, Kawali, Bhajan and devotional songs. Nobody can match his voice in Hari Bans Rai Bachchan's MadhuShala. The poem is made immortal by Manna Dey's touchy, melodious and strong voice. A lot of love and pranams to this evergreen singer.

I disagree with Manna Ji over this point.There is one thing that is called god gifted voice.Kishore da,Mukesh Ji were not classical trained but had god gifted voice.Kishore da ,Mukesh Ji may not be technically strong in comparison with Manna da but these two legendary singers can not be treated lesser in terms of singing.in other words.what Mercedes car can do Maruti car can't & vice versa.

Rafi Sahab , Kishore Kumarji , Hemanthji , Mannada & Mahendra Kapoorji All Of Them Top Singers Were There In The Same Golden Era Of Hindi Music 1950 - 1975 ( The Very Best Of Music / Music Directors / Lyricist / & Singers ). Through Their Unique God Gifted Voice & One Man Rajesh Khanna Made Rafi Sahab & Kishorji Sing nearly 80 Percent of The songs & An Opportunity ,Any Of The Other Singers Would Have Got .Mukesh ji Death in 1976 , Rafi Sahab Death in 1980 & Talatji Fading Away AfterJahanAra In 1965 - Hemantji With Such An Extraordinary Heavy Voice Had Strangely Very Few Songs & Also Was Never heard After Mid 70's - Opened The Door For More Songs For Highly Talented Mannada & Mahendrakapoorji. Unfortunately They were Left to Fade Away With Hardly Any Songs in The 80's . Ramanand Sagar Ramayana Could Have Had Mannada Sing Than The Out Of Tune Suresh Wadkar. Chopraji Atleast Was Intelligent Enough To Use Mahendrakapoorji In His Mahabharatha Serial . Why The 2 Never Was Given Songs After Rafi Sahab Death
