    A huge change to how DJI Geo-fencing works, meaning most DJI drones can now fly in more places. DJI have removed most of their own Geo-fencing zones and replaced them with the basic No Fly Zones stipulated by the Aviation Authority for the country being flown in. This unlocks geo-fencing in many new areas for flyers in the UK and many EU countries

      This is what it is getting ready for network-enabled RID, when that is in play NATS will give the fly no fly command to your controller via the interwebs. You will have to be connected to the internet before you can fly when network RID comes in. The UK has not yet released their map to manufacturers, most of the EU have. Where does Dronescene get its aviation data from? I am interested because you suggest its better than AA.

    Thank God! I went out twice recently (having never had need to check DJIs system) and found myself unable to start my drone. It had made me completely paranoid about flying up to an FRZ.

    Hi Ian. Great update! You really get the sense things are rapidly changing in the drone world. Yours is an excellent reminder that ultimately it's the drone operator's responsibility to ensure they are not flying in restricted airspace. It remains to be seen how this information can be easily and (freely) made available in the future. Fingers crossed the CAA will make some sort of resource/App available in a clear and user friendly way. 🤣🤣🤣
    Hopefully these changes will not result in an increase in drone incidents until some proper CAA approved info is made available. Use of any CAA resource (check map restrictions) would be great, as the CAA could mandate a check is made prior to any flight operation. We will see, Anyway, Cheers and Happy New Year! Interesting, thanks! I live a few miles outside Glasgow Airport FRZ. Yet DJI Fly app continually screams at me "150M ALTITUDE LIMIT" (sic!). For obvious reasons I ignore this as the real regs limit us to 120m, and in practice I'm normally far lower. However, the pointless warnings are really quite distracting, and probably mean I won't see or notice any *other* warnings in relation to my drone - warnings that might actually matter. So, removing these bogus restrictions almost certainly improves safety. Progress, of sorts!

However, the thought of having a run-in with an irate local encouraged me to leave the drone in the car as I wasn’t 100% clear on the legislation. Another one I’m unsure of, is flying near National Trust sites. I understand this is not allowed, however what is the no fly radius? I was at Uffington White Horse recently and there is a permanent sign saying “police drones operating in the area. I’m sure this is merely to discourage leisure drone flying. Hi Ian. A great update and an excellent reminder to people that it is their responsibility to ensure they are not flying in restricted airspace. The CAA really need to get on with producing a freel & simple App which shows airspace restrictions. They could mandate checking it prior to any drone flight operations. I know they can say it's peoples own responsibility to find out where they can fly safely but the CAA is there to encourage and assist safe flight operators so the need for them to get that information out is imperative. Anyway, Happy New Year and Cheers. 👍👍👍Suffolk Air Adventures.

    • @suffolkairadventures
      @suffolkairadventures 4 місяці тому +4

      @@SkysharkMediaAerialImagery No head not in the sand... I'm aware of (and have) Drone Assist and it is a great App. I think you have missed the point I was making. Drone Assist while referenced by the CAA on their website is not an 'official' or CAA approved App. Nor is it endorsed by them, and for good reason as they caveat on their site. ..'As a regulator, the CAA supports any measure to improve the safe use of drones but does not endorse individual products' The point being is that if there is some incorrect information about flight restrictions on Drone Assist (or any other App) the CAA won't care as the will say it is your responsibility as the drone operator to ensure safe flight operations. If an approved CAA app was available there would be the (not unreasonable) expectation that it was accurate. You as the drone operator can then have 100% confidence that you are flying in unrestricted airspace. If recorded, the checking of a CAA App could be used as evidence if challenged by the police or CAA. This would show you have done everything in your power to be flying in an area not covered by a restriction. For example, If I check NATs to see if there is a NOTAM in effect in advance of a planned flight, I know this is approved government information and therefore will correct. Not supplied by a private/commercial 3rd party App developer who will not accept (nor should they) any liability for incorrect supplied information. As the CAA say its up to the Operator to ensure a safe flight is conducted. I know it will upset a lot of people but I'm in favour of increased controls if it means both commercial and hobby flyers can continue to fly drones in a safe and responsible manner. Increased controls will hopefully weed out the idiots, criminals and auditors who just want to antagonise the authorities. I feel more controls/restrictions are inevitable anyway, so we may as well understand and accept it. I'm sorry if you feel I was promoting ignorance as an excuse for people to fly where ever they like, that certainly wasn't my intention. Cheers. Suffolk Air Adventures.

    Thanks Ian, really useful video. The UK really does need to get its act together with regards to info for drone pilots. As many have said this is good and bad. Honestly - without ensuring the replacement system was in effect before removing the GEO Zones I think it’s currently now worse. At least previously a complete newbie could be prevented from flying in some of the areas they shouldn’t. Now a new mini 2SE user can just launch their drone anywhere except an airport. My first drone was a mini 2 se and came with no information regarding any of the rules or regulations about flying (mini 3 and 4 have CAA leaflets in the box). From various Facebook groups it’s clear there are many people who have bought these drones and have no clue where they can and can’t fly, and risk bringing the whole hobby into even more disrepute.

    I live in a FRZ and often get permission from the local ATC to fly within the FRZ, and have to get a DJI unlock. I discovered this yesterday evening as I tried to do a DJI GEO unlock but nothing was showing. My drone doesn't even take off indoors without an unlock. I noticed that there was a firmware update, so I did that. Then a flysafe update, so I did that as well. Tried to get an unlock this morning but nothing, so I went on the DJI forum where others were having the same trouble with unlocks. Got told by DJI that unlocks were no longer required. Turned my drone on and now I just have a simple tick box and confirmation button and my drone will take off. No more Unlocks to do. So I only have to get ATC permission now to fly locally.

Other countries under EASA jurisdiction will follow in due course.

    This is absolute nuts. Just checked my local airport (Gatwick) and this is only in an “Enhanced Warning Zone” which only requires a DJI verified account to over-ride, utter madness, Gatwick (and every other FRZ in the country) should be in the Restricted Zones at the very least.
    I guess they’ll be a lot more morons flying into Gatwick airspace soon then, if it’s so east to over-ride the restrictions - it’s almost as if DJI want their users to stir up shit and bring in tighter regulations.

Can't help but think this is a step backwards, I live within spitting distance of RAF Kenley. There is now nothing to stop me flying in an FRZ, I'm not going to because I'm not a dick, but there will be plenty who do either deliberately or because they're ignorant to the zoning restrictions. The possibility of a repeat of the "Gatwick" incident has now multiplied exponentially. When it happens the CAA won't hold back, just another inevitable nail in the coffin of this hobby in the UK.

    I don't understand the point of removing these geo zones until each individual country was ready to be able to offer its own up to date no fly zones, creating a smoth transition from DJI straight to the CAA for example.
    its almost like they are deliberately leaving the door open for misuse to then crack down further citing irresponsible operators or even just inexperienced users.

    This is good news. There's been just two occasions in two years when I've been prevented from flying by a fictional DJI NFZ, but I overcame the problems by moving the TOLP by a few metres and imaging from a different viewpoint.
    However, I know a few places where overflight will - at certain times of the day - endanger crowds or people who will be unable to avoid a falling drone, such as workers in glasshouses. So...
    Q. Who should people with responsibility under the Occupiers' Liability Act now contact to ensure appropriate geofencing?
