    This is one of my all time favorite movies, particularly the ending. You said that about “somebody’s getting fired for that” about all the screwups with the falling lamp, radio sound, rain just on him, etc. One thing I’ve been thinking about for years is that there’s obviously some kind of organized resistance trying to free Truman.
    Taking a close look at all the stuff on Sylvia’s walls, she’s working on getting people inside the system to sabotage the show. I think the resistance must have existed for Truman’s whole life, but Sylvia loving Truman made her that much more dedicated to the cause.
    I am thinking that yes, people probably lost their jobs for those mistakes, but I think those things weren’t accidental but rather the results of sabotage.
    I’d love to see a sequel where Sylvia and Truman get some kind of revenge and some peace and privacy.

    • @AtlanticGiantPumpkin
      @AtlanticGiantPumpkin Рік тому +26

      I completely agree! With one exception: I think having a sequel would ruin the point of the show. There’s a reason we don’t see him again once he walks out that door. His life is his now. It’s not ours to view. His life is not for our viewing pleasure. We’ll have to be satisfied with not knowing.

    • @MarijnvdSterre
      @MarijnvdSterre Рік тому +11

      That the radio in the car picks up the signal where they are talking about him is 100% sabotage imo. No way that would happen otherwise. As is the smuggling in of his father most likely.
      I do think the falling lamp was just wear and tear after 30 years of using it. That moment being used by the resistance to make their moves.

    • @tamarleigh
      @tamarleigh Рік тому +4

      I also love how the story of Truman’s televised life ends with his taking a bow and exiting the stage. It’s perfect. But I do love to imagine how Truman would feel the first time he walks into Sylvia’s apartment. 🥲💗

      I love this theory about a possible resistance! I love the thought of people other than Sylvia caring about Truman's human rights and wellbeing, and wanting to stop the show. But I disagree on the movie needing a sequel. His story ended here for us, the audience. It should stay that way. Perhaps if there was a new character introduced as the protagonist we "follow", that could be neat. Or even a prequel about how this whole sick mess started.

These days I'll watch a movie and maybe enjoy it, but I never feel I want to go back to it. The 70's to 90's were an amazing period for rewatchable movies, and I hope we get that quality again someday.

    I remember watching this in the theater when it first came out. There were a lot of laughs in the audience but when it got to the final boat scene, the whole room fell silent. I cried and I know I heard sniffling around me. Jim Carrey is a funny dude but he's been a few movies that have a completely different feel to them. There's this, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Man on the Moon and one of my favorites simply for how dark and different it is, The Number 23. He's a talented man.

      I went with my mom to watch it in the theater, too. I remember having the right idea, except I applied it the other way - since I was 11 when I saw it, I wasn't quite smart enough to understand it, so I remember thinking that Truman was an actor at first, not the other way around. Once my mom explained it to me, I watched the last 20 minutes or so much differently.

    Yep, that's a part of movie making. When actors have to eat in scenes, and those scenes are shot over and over and over, they start taking smaller and smaller bites, or even just shuffling food around on the plate.
    Watch from now on. You'll be amazed at how little food is actually eaten in movies, because actors start getting stuffed and even sick.

    There was a mention in a behind the scenes bit about the fact that Meryl (really the actress playing Meryl) was the highest paid acting person on the show and was I believe a billionaire by the point that the movie happens. She got proceeds from a clothing line that sold all of the outfits she wore on the show, she got proceeds from all of the products she modeled and touted throughout. She didn't NEED to keep acting. She wanted that lime light. Same with his friend and most of the "main cast".

    "Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!"
    Fun Fact: Ed Harris and Jim Carrey never met during filming.
    Medical Cameo Fact: In an early scene, a bottle of Vitamin D is on Truman and Meryl's kitchen table, needed for those without exposure to the (real) sun.
    Trumania Nation Fact: The Trumania bits, where Truman draws on the mirror with soap and acts strange, was completely improvised by Jim Carrey. Carrey and Peter Weir initially found working together on set difficult (Carrey's contract gave him the power to demand rewrites), but Weir was impressed with Carrey's improvisational skills, and the two became more interactive.

    This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I was lucky enough to watch it in the theater. The fact that Jim Carrey and the movie got snubbed for Best Actor and Best Picture is still ridiculous to me. It seemed likejust science fiction back then, but with the way technology has progressed, a scaled-down version of this could totally happen. It's a special kind of paranoia. It makes you want to question your surroundings; how much of what we think is reality is actually real? Are you being watched? Is your family even your family? His gradual process of noticing things and slowly breaking it all down is always fun to watch. There are lots of little details that you'll only catch on a rewatch, like the "You Are Now Leaving Seahaven Island! Are You Sure It's A Good Idea?" sign just before he drives across the bridge. The production is really interesting; several things were changed between script drafts. One of the early scripts was much darker, with the fake setting being in New York, the escape being longer and more violent, including Truman shooting down a helicopter, going through the exit door and having him stealth his way out of the studio lot, holding a flare gun to a tour guide's head, and an in-person confrontation Christof. The sentence, "You never had a camera in my head" was always there, but it was in a darker context; originally, Truman said it as he was about to throw himself and Christof from the top of a building. You should check out the deleted scenes, too; one shows that Marlon actually found Truman during the search at the end, but deliberately let him escape. Regardless, there's no way the show would've lasted; the actors are terrible at improvising under unpredictable conditions, and Truman's natural curiosity was going to win out over fear in the long run. It's a great message about embracing one's nature, not denying it, taking risks, and seeking truth. And yeah, that's one of the best endings I've ever seen.

    The Majestic and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are a couple Jim Carrey movies that are similar in tone to this one. Like the Truman Show, they are more heartwarming than comedic, and Jim Carrey plays the lead in them more straight than he usually does. The Majestic is a Capra-esque feel good movie. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a surreal romance. Both are definitely worth watching. And if you really want to see Jim Carrey show a different side, his movie the Number 23 was a light horror/thriller, no comedy, and it was good, definitely worth watching.

    Two very important moments from this film:
    1. When the interview with Christof begins, it's mentioned Christof is a very reclusive, private person. This man is responsible for creating a TV show where one man had 0 privacy whatsoever, and yet he apparently values his own privacy greatly. How very peculiar.
    2. Christof defends his actions by saying "Truman can leave at any time if he wants if he tries hard enough." Yet, we see the lengths Truman went through on escape attempt 1 just before this, and then Christof is ready to *delete* Truman instead of letting him escape. Again, how very interesting.
    Two little moments that show just who Christof is. And it's a terrifying thought he is in control of Truman's life. Glad you watched this movie!

    I've loved this movie since I saw it in theaters. The ending details were some of the best: the "I am the creator.....of a television show" guy (that line got a laugh in the theater since his hubris was so obvious) PLAYING God while his girlfriend is, literally praying to the REAL God to help free him. The two guys representing the worldwide audience, just like you said, are going to just turn the channel looking for something else. The fact that we don't get to see what happened to Truman later. If he were a real person, he'd have the right to live the rest of his life without a camera on him. Except maybe in the courtroom when he's suing the SHIT out of Christof. LOL

      As I understood the movie Truman became the first baby to be owned by a corporation, so does Truman even have personhood in the eyes of the law? Can he in fact sue Christof?

    • @robertsmalls3513
      @robertsmalls3513 Рік тому +1

      @@scipioafricanus5871I would say yes there is grounds for a lawsuit on the grounds of fraud, false imprisonment, and potentially attempted murder. He didn’t want Truman to leave because that was his cash cow, and he attempted to kill Truman with the storm at the end. Truman never gave permission to be on a tv show, even as an adult. The corporation could get away with it for childhood for being the “parent” but the adult years is definitely non consensual life path.

    Watching this at the time, before Big Brother and the rise of 24 hr reality shows like it, and then coming back now is so interesting tbh. One of my favourite movies! I remember the first few seasons of Big Brother ppl used to just have it on in the bg all day too it was such a new concept.

    Yeah, this movie was a huge surprise for me too. I went in expecting a typical Jim Carrey comedy when it released. Jim Carrey does have some legit acting chops. Eternal Sunshine is pretty incredible, but depressing as hell. He also did a weird psychological thriller (Number 23) that was pretty good too. It's kind of a bummer he didn't flex a bit more.

    Watch the deleted scenes his "buddy" Marlin says in a sit down of the script tells Kristoff , " we can kill him right?" Kristoff just remains silent. By all accounts Kristoff remaining silent indicates that they would have gone for that idea I think this would have been after his baby would have been born and he / she would have been the focus of the show...

    I've flown a lot and lightning isn't an issue. My Father was a pilot for a major airline. The planes are designed to deal with lightning. He told me super casually that he had seen a ball of lightning quickly roll down the center aisle, front to back. I never witnessed that but always wanted to. What they say about one of the safest ways to travel is accurate. Cheers.

    I agree with all the comments recommending Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Majestic. I would also recommend Man On The Moon, in which Jim Carrey gives possibly his best acting performance (should’ve gotten a Best Actor Oscar win or nomination, imo) playing the legendary comedian and actor Andy Kaufman. He was perfect in the role, and as diverse and unique as Andy was, that’s no small feat.

    I've always wondered what a follow-up (not really a sequel) might be like. Who'd hire him? They have seen him flake off at work. What would he be like with co-workers who'd known him 'forever'? There's a chance he'd never have a job, never have real friends... the follow-up could be VERY sad.

    JL, I was introduced to your channel when I was looking up Kill Bill stuff. Love your vibe man, I got so stoked when I saw that you watched Truman Show. That movie is near and dear to my heart. One of my dad's best friends helped location scout/cater for the movie, so as a 11 year old I had no idea what it was going to be about but I got this cool sticker to put on my journal like two years before it came out. When I finally had the opportunity to see it in theatres my dad and I lost it. I've watched a ton of movies, but this is easily top ten of all time for me. Also the way your dog reacted to your emotions during the movie was amazing. That pup loves you and that shit makes my day. Did you say the editor is Blank? I have bad hearing, but he needs to get in there and introduce himself. Love and knuckles from Tacoma, Washington.
