I like livestreams to watch later.... while I do something else, like dishes, or dinner. I think most livestream hellos at the beginning are just because they are waiting for people to open up their channel. You could be different and open up by sewing and that would give us a peak at what your project is. I rarely watch live, unless it happens while I have my youtube on, while I'm sewing or housecleaning.
I appreciate your honesty, about your knowledge, and I enjoy watching you decide how to do something....

I am 100% right there with you about the livestreams. I do a couple lives each month and as people pop in I’ll say Hi. People like to be recognized but to sit there and just say for 10-15 minutes is painful. Or to stop every 10 minutes or so to silently read the past comments 😳. I always toss in an upfront apology. Sorry if I don’t see you pop in. Then I say hi to my lurkers sometime during the live. I’m usually live for a couple hours so I take drink breaks. I announce It and tell everyone to hydrate with me. That way maybe less people will be annoyed by my “loud” swallowing. You can wait until after the live to eat and please please please don’t chew gum during any videos. Why do people do that? . I’ve noticed that I stumble less on my words during a live than a standard recorded video. Plus most people get It. There’s no script so I’m not trying to remember what to say. I just wing It 😆. I fill dead space with random chatter. Like asking their favorite ice cream flavor? Did they go to a lake during the summer as a kid? Do they sew quilts etc. if I’m really blank I might cheat and say let’s listen to the hum of the sewing machine for a couple seconds. It gives me a chance to refocus and get back on track.
I hope you do go live. I think your livestreams would be fun to hang out at. I tend to listen while I work but if the conversation is good I’ll chat for a bit here and there too.

I like LIVES but I agree I hate when it takes 10-15 minutes to address and acknowledge everyone. Because everyone knows it’s a LIVE and they shouldn’t feel ignored or left out just bc their name wasn’t called 🙃 AND on LIVES it seems as if ppl talk on and on about the same thing. It doesn’t bother me if they snack here and there bc sometimes they last kind of long. It would be nice to get the audience involved with what’s going on and allowing them to give suggestions and/or opinions. Just my thoughts 😊

I LOVE lives! UA-cam is my TV so when a live is announced ahead of time, it allows me to « schedule » it in so I can attend. I follow a few garment sewists who live stream on a regular basis and they’ve been able to build up a community around it which is a lot of fun. It was super fun to see you during last week’s « conference » and I look forward to seeing what you implement on your channel. 😊

Please, please, please! Have a couple people make quilts from your patterns before you print them! Having other people put their eyes and hands on them can make a real difference! I recently bought a kit and the cutting directions made such a waste of fabric! It makes me very cautious about buying patterns from them again, even though they have some great patterns! Pattern testers can make a world of difference!

I think on some of the livestreams, they are oblivious to the things they are doing, but you cannot please everyone. I don't like to wait 15+ minutes to get into the comments. I do appreciate the interactions with the people coming to the channel to watch the livestream because they may have legitimate questions and comments that are not answered on a regular video.

Miss Mirium, you do what you have to do. I understand. I'm interested in your live stream; however, it turns out. No worries. it'll be great. Love your honesty and personality. Both our sons are in their 30's, so, I'm not adverse to communicating with anyone really. I watch a lot of Utube videos, as I have insomnia. So, I'm usually up most of the night. The give-a-way was great. Congrats to Diane! Although, I'd love to win, it's not really necessary for me to win as I have a lot already. I inherited my grandmothers and mother's sewing supplies, fabrics and sewing machines. I also have some of my great-grandmother's sewing things. I remember back in the '70's patching my jeans with grandma's quilt block fabrics. I loved it. I hand sewed them on and wore it with pride. You, my dear friend are a breath of fresh air and a wealth of inspiration. Happy thoughts :)

I completely agree with you about people saying “hi” to everyone on lives! So freaking annoying! Two people I watch regularly are ByAnnie and Angela Walters. They have another person who collect the questions that come in during their live show and they answer them at the end of their segment. They read the question out loud and answer them. I realize you may not have that option, though. Thanks for not saying hi to everyone and spending time reading to yourself what they have written!

When I worked in a library people would say “oh must be nice to read all day”. Jokes on them….I was definitely not being paid to read all day. I can see how the non-sewing part can take up so much time. I hear a lot of creators talk about the giant time block for editing and narrating being something that most people don’t think about when they’re just watching content.
I think watching the planning and matching in real-time would be interesting and helpful. Fabric Cafe has a “fabric matchmaker” series where viewers send in a fabric they can’t match and Fran puts it together for them. We all love looking at fabric and dreaming up projects.

I apologize in advance if I sound grumpy, because I DO enjoy your content and have been lurking for a while now and will continue to show up. But this just struck a very specific cord with me and I want to make sure you hear from "the other side" so to speak.
So I'm writing this as someone who consumes a whole LOT of Twitch creative content AND UA-cam... and who livestreamed for YEARS and had hundreds of people watching me cross stitch. I've only recently started making YT content, but do at least have a little experience there as well, though I'm mostly a consumer here.
I always find it interesting that people who start on UA-cam and get introduced to livestream hate on it so much. The greetings and occasional pauses of livestreams. "How boring!"
But there are different TYPES of livestreams. Both overly produced 'shows' that do not interact with chat at all and are just putting on a show that happens to be scheduled and minimally edited. And then there's the individuals just sitting in front of their computer doing what they would normally be doing just in front of a camera and chatting with people online.
And for the second type of streams, that IS the draw. Actually seeing the full process in real time, being able to ask questions, getting to know the streamers and having them recognize your name and genuinely be excited to see you in chat each and every time. Seeing mistakes and corrections in real time is also really beneficial to someone learning a new craft or art. I WANT to see the real thing, even if it IS just someone buckling down into focus mode for a few moments to finish something.
Most of my viewers were working on their own crafts or projects while 'watching', or just have it on in the background at work. So the awkward pauses or never-ending streams are almost a good thing. And the same goes for me when I watch streams. I'm working on my own project while someone else works on theirs. We're just two friends stitching and bitchin' (plus dozens of other chatters). "No one wants to see that." Me. I want to see that. And so do thousands of others. And we're not watching livestreams JUST for the streamer, but also for the others in chat. I tend to prefer smaller sized streamers with less than 100 viewers so that it feels like a proper community, but there's plenty of reasons to watch the bigger ones as well.
As a watcher, I sometimes find UA-cam videos TOO condensed. I didn't get to see that tricky part of a project, or the part I specifically was interested in. I don't get as much of the creator just rambling about whatever topics come to mind as they work. I don't get to make suggestions and help shape the course of the project. It sometimes feel too produced. But when I do want straight and to the point tutorials that's where I go. I used to comment on UA-cam a lot, but over time have started to not bother on larger channels because I'm less likely to get that personal response. Or even responses from others in the comments.
There is a place for BOTH Edited video and low production livestreaming. And a completely different mindset and culture around both. And there's no reason to disparage one or the other just because it's not for you. =/ Prefer edited videos? Just don't show up to the livestream! That's it!
As a creator, though they're completely different workloads too. I haven't made a ton of UA-cam videos so far but editing is TIME CONSUMING. Getting different shots, hunting down music, splicing in B-roll.. it's a LOT of work. (And I'm terrible at it, lmao)
But streaming is also mentally EXHAUSTING even if you're just "doing stuff in front of a camera". Sure you don't have to edit it after, but you do have to be "ON" for hours and actively engaged with BOTH whatever you're doing on stream and keeping up with and interacting with chat. The occasional 'produced' livestream for a special event is all well and good, but that can't be the norm when livestreaming platform unless you have an established brand and are doing it full time.
And while going quiet for a bit or taking breaks to eat (Good gods mute yourself please though lol! That's what break screens are for.) are more acceptable in live because you're STILL HUMAN; This unrealistic pressure from yourself and the loud minority complaining about the realities of livestreaming telling you to be constantly entertaining is absolutely harmful to mental health and why so many streamers burn out after a while. :(
tl;dr. I do hope you'll consider livestreaming, but go easy on yourself and not expect to be constantly entertaining. But instead to take it as an opportunity to get to know your community.

Thank you so much for your in depth insight! You’re very right, there is room for both types of content. I’m hoping to strike a happy medium between the overly structured and completely unplanned lives. I’m sure alot of it I’ll just have to figure it out by doing it 😂
I was pretty shocked with the many comments I got how people dislike lives, but it’s funny. They were the only ones commenting, so it really doesn’t give a clear picture of how the lives will go (if that makes sense.)
I do see the value in lives though to be able to really grow and nurture community, and that will always be the goal, that’s why I said multiple times “if you don’t want to watch, you don’t have to!”
Again, thanks so much for your advice! I really appreciate it! 💖🤗
