“Coreification”: the latest manifestation of placing oneself and others into boxes, rather than accepting the world and humanity as messy, intriguing, absurd and deliciously incomprehensible.

humanity cannot escape it's own psychology of compartmentalization, because it's been so useful for us in our survival. I don't see it ever changing in the mainstream.

Cringe it’s as simple as if people want to understand fashion they need to categorize it and making a core is a easy and simple way to do it.

When I fall under the impulses of wanting to fit a certain aesthetic uniform under the basis of it "being cool" I try to think deeper about it. An example is how I love sci fi. To avoid being too costumey I focus on a slight abstraction like "cyberpunk in essence is about anachronism, so I should pair timeless peices with technical pieces." Rather than buying surface level sci fi looking pieces.

My opinion is that dressing in a specific style/core is fine as long as you are:
    a) Already part of the group who defined the aesthetic, i.e. started dressing that way organically
    b) Genuinely interested in the history/significance behind the aesthetic and want to know more
    c) Not part of the aesthetic but aware of the fact that they're just clothes, i.e. not letting them influence your personality/decisions
From what I gathered this video was more about a) and b), basically that you shouldn't be a poser and get into the lifestyle before the aesthetic, but imo that's not strictly necessary. Do people who wear bomber jackets need to join the army? Do people who wear cowboy boots have to start riding horses? Do people who wear Balenciaga have to become homeless? So on and so forth.
For me it's not that I'm trying to be something I'm not, it's the fact that trying to experience the lifestyle behind every aesthetic is not feasible, or those lifestyles are something I know I'm not interested in, whereas the clothing I am. At the end of the day I like buying clothing and wearing them, I'm not trying to embody the perceived personality behind every aesthetic, it's just a hobby for me.

    • @adamzick3318
      @adamzick3318 2 місяці тому +4

LMAO the balenciaga homeless got me.
I definitely agree with you, and I think what JQ is saying isn’t wrong, but it’s also very restrictive. Like the way you put it with the bomber jacket example, it confines your style rather than letting you explore yourself and what you find beautiful/appealing.
I do think some people take it too far, but it doesn’t have to be that serious.
I feel the same way, where fashion is definitely something that is a part of me but at the end of the day, it is a hobby. It doesn’t always have to be that deep.

The comment section on this video is really interesting.
While I do see the point in what you are saying, I think that point a) is actually a bit restricting in itself.
In my opinion the "started dressing that way organically" doesn't imply intrisecally that one must be a part of a specific group.
Maybe I am overthinking a bit here, but let me explain via an example: let's suppose a person starts getting interested in the aesthetic of technical clothes - let's be more specific just for the sake of my example: gorpcore - does it mean that person must then start hiking and must find a group of hikers in order to understand the essence of gorpocore? (stupid example, I know, it's but just to give an idea of what I mean).
Belonging to a subculture or group can influence a person's aesthethic (and more generally their identity), but exploring other styles that do not belong to your group is also fine. Maybe we cannot label it as something that started organically, but if that persons sticks to a certain aesthethic long term, then I think this is also legit even if you don't experience it within a group ^^

If you are a post-secondary student, I strongly recommend using your institution to access their library and online catalogue of academic books and journals to research fashion and subcultures. There are heaps of information available that are otherwise not readily available or very expensive to attain.

One of 9.1% sisters here. Important aspect of the core-ification is the indentity that comes with it. People in US from the way you build cities to the fact that it's an immigrant society makes you more prone to try to put yourselves in a box. If you can't describe in words who you are in a way that would make you similar to someone else are you anyone? The aesthetics are the last resort to feel any sort on community beacuse there are hardly any real ones left. Of course it's not only the US but you really dont help yourselves when you build your cities like you do. And thats why you all need to know what ethincty you are, becaue being just another white person isn't tied to any actual identity.

I think we’re just so desperate for a sense of belonging that we keep making trends after trends after trends. Because if there’s an aesthetic out there like business core and we like it,we want to meet groups of people that have that same style so we can feel like we actually do fit in and we’re not alone..And that we wouldn’t be considered as weird for having such a style because most are doing it. That’s my take on this whole thing and thanks for the video! You have a great way with words and you know how to explain something complicated in simpler terms :) keep up the great work. 💪🏻💪🏻💗

I may not know much about fashion cores but I feel like as a society we categorize objects and passions into cores or generalizations. Just like music, fashion has both good and bad, likes and dislikes, but nobody dresses the same way even if they follow the same trend. But I’ve always wondered why people love to hate. In a world of acceptance there seems to be an increasingly endless amount of judgment which appears to be a must to obtain an equilibrium. What I’m trying to get at is that in a society where everyone and everything is accepted why is it that I can’t wear certain clothes to school or why I get weird looks if I put my hair up when it’s hot out? Why is it that the image people put out into the world has to be them and they can’t change that when they are around people that only like who they present at school or at a party not who they are when they are at home in pajamas with bed head binging a show? Why is the world set up to where the equilibrium of acceptance and hate is skewed so far to the side of hate?

I used to constantly try to fit into certain aesthetics, basing my entire wardrobe and personality on that. when I really grew up, I just take what emphasizes my figure, what I feel comfortable in and what reflects MY preferences in the vision of beauty. Moreover, your vision of style can be expressed in details: accessories and personal changes in clothing

I think u will always copy even if you have the lifestyle thats is part of the subculture, people in groups will also copy each-other kinda like a peer pressure if u go to punk concerts u will see a lot of people with leather clothes so u will feel the need to get one to feel included we are humans and the most important part in our evolution is copying eachother/ learning, copying is learning, so if you search a way to stop copying other people, you are just lying to yourself every human copys and will copy, copying is what makes us grow mentally. we just have to accept and not let consumerism take over our fragile mechanism

Happy bday . I do believe women are generally more generally socially accepted to dress a lil more differently or “aestheically” whilst men are usually expected to dress more generically or simpler. It does also tie to the common stereotype of men into fashion “ all being gay” and therefore usually avoiding more flamboyant pieces of clothing. On that note it does make me happy to see ppl and men so openly into fashion like u, regards from ur 7(8?)% and from south america.

I get it. In the game I play which allows players to dress-up with different pieces of outfits, shoes, and other accessories, the avatar/character you play with can appear to be associated with a certain aesthetic or feel a different attitude by the ensemble they are wearing.
I don't take what what character wears as a statement or anything, yet they do give off a "core aesthetic" of something by one accessory I have it wear or the whole look it has.
The weapon they have can also have its appearance change. Being an MMORPG, that doesn't restrict players into classes but still allows them to be of a certain battle style adds to the overall look as well.
If I gave my character bunny ears (there are different kinds too), I give my character a "kemonomimi" (beast ear) core but I tend to have it wear casual street wear clothes, which gives it another layer.
    If I have it wear a magician's top-hat with a domino-mask and long-coat, my character transforms into a mash-up of clown/magician core.
If I give my character a helmet with horns, a long-sleeved garb which has pants and have it wear a pointed tail while it carries a staff; they have a "warlock" core.
I would also like to add, the different kinds of pets. Some are straight up vehicles you can ride but behave like sentient creatures. Others are animals like dogs, cats, horses. While the rest meet the fantasy theme of dragons, imps, etc.. Riding a dragon or a car while wearing a different ensemble of clothing can also change the core-aesthetics of the character.

appearing to be and being aren't clearcut in something socially produced like fashion. in many cases appearing to be is the same as being. if you appear to be intimidating to someone you are intimidating if you appear to be stylish to someone you are stylish, by being perceived in a certain way you literally become that perception in the mind of the person perceiving you.

I feel like your personal style should be an accurate bi-product of what you do, rather than your fashion dictating what you do. I dress the way I do because I have skated my whole life. I didn’t get into skating so I could dress the way I do now, I skateboard because I enjoy it, and the way I dress is simply a result of that.

As an ugly guy who tries to dress kinda niche it feels like Im set up for failure bc I either dress inauthentically and feel worse and get slightly more attention or dress more for myself which I was told would be ultimately better bc of confidence but ends up resulting in much fewer meaningful interactions despite definitely feeling better about myself. I hate to be so cliche but man there's rly no fucking chance if u dont have beauty privilege it really is just GGs

As one of the 8.5 gals, I really want to tell you that everything is alright, you’ll get the girl eventually, and that life is full of sunshine and rainbows but I’d hate to lie to you. All I say is that even as a mid-looking girl, I haven’t been approached because of my “exaggerated” style. Things are rough out here. Wishing us both luck 🍀

@@ferdaousselmoussaid8843 it can be really difficult to feel adequate! I'm sorry that u feel that way too, you nor anyone else deserves to feel ugly. Hopefully being true to your sense of style brings u the confidence and authenticity people say is so attractive!! Although I need to listen to that myself.. Wishing u luck too :)
