I always think it's the coolest thing ever when people get involved in the outdoors for the first time! Took my coworker, an immigrant from Ethiopia, on his first hike this summer and I could not believe the smile on his face. Keep crushing guys, you're inspiring!
Dang, there's a lot of hate on this video right now! I think it's really cool, they're going out there and trying to get people involved in outdoor sports, and that's awesome.
Marshall; I think its great that black athletes are finding another venue in which to cultivate their abilities and talents and form supportive communities. I think its great that blacks are becoming a part of this amazing and challenging sport, which for much of its history has been populated mostly by white climbers from Europe and North America, but also Sherpas and Nepalis. But it would be even more encouraging and uplifting to see blacks participate, succeed and lead in advancing new techniques, if we did not characterize the sport's history, or people's stereotypical reference points as being hate based. It's not! I have backpacked with and climbed with blacks, indians, asians and mexicans, and you know what never comes up as we test ourselves; as we belay one another on the side of a cliff; as we coax and encourage and applaud one another? Race! We're just folks enjoying God's amazing creation together and racial hatred and prejudice is never a part of that. If I make friends with black climbers and backpackers who are reaching out to other blacks to introduce them to the sport (a really great thing) I would hope that they would welcome me, a fellow white climber and backpacker, just as they would another black climber. What I love about climbing and backpacking is that we are able to enjoy together, something spectacular, something exhilirating that most people will never experience. We love, respect and admire pro-athletes from every sport, most of which are dominated (disproportionately) by remarkable black athletes. I expect that as more black people cultivate their strength and talents in climbing that they will also come to hold a dominant position in this sport, as well. It would be disappointing to me if we allowed divisive racial politics to even become a part of our larger community. By the way, I would also never join a club called "White-European" mountaineers. For me that would be racist, and it would deny me the privilege of knowing and sharing the outdoors with people from other cultures and backgrounds.
It's too late, and I'm too tired to go into details, but as you may or may not have known - blacks and other minorities have been oppressed in America for hundreds of years. While slavery was abolished 150 years ago (we have 110 year old people...not that long ago if you think about it...) and segregation ended just 50 years ago, the idea of racism, oppression, and peoples civil rights being taken away back then and now - are still fresh in peoples minds today. As it is inscribed into the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Due to this oppression of minorities and blacks, due to the laws, the politicians, the prison systems, the housing segregation and redlining - blacks have been unfairly treated and because of this; most blacks and minorities have crappier lives growing up. This means less money, less access to new programs and hip new toys. Less instances of both parents being home, and less grooming on how to be a decent human being whilst growing up. People, places and things like BET, BOC, Black History Month, Barack Obama, Womens Month, etc are put in place so that minorities can have something to look UP to instead of meandering around or accepting what is in the cards for them. It encourages them to grow, to get up to go out and do something, to try and succeed with others have failed and to never give up. And most of all; that we're special, just like the rest of the world and don't mean any less. (because, as I mention again - that until 1965 blacks and whites weren't even allowed to vote, share the same theater, restaurants or anything else in the south - re: NOT SPECIAL). Anyhow, I'm tired. Garrettthief I respectfully disagree. Your brain (and mine, and everyone else's) sees in colors, and class, and stereotypes without you having to think about that. That is what is has done for millions of years. It is an evolutionary imperative that allowed us to survive by distinguishing safe from unsafe, friend from foe. You can't turn that off, you can only be aware of it, or be oblivious about it. Sincerely wish you an awesome day mate.
Where in the video they talked about socio economic class?
This is nuts. No one is saying black people shouldn't climb?!! It is just that their own community supports sports like basketball more, which is totally fine. But why do these people have to pull the race card every time their is a issue in the topic of minorities? I totally support more diversity in climbing and become extremely happy every time I see a black climber in the gym! I love higher diversity, but why and how in the world can u talk about oppresion sooo much? like I am sorry, but we dont have slavery or institutional laws preventing black people from climbing. This is a shame for the black people who had actually suffered through racism. I seriously dont agree with people saying that their arent enough black climbers because of racism!
"these people..." this is exactly why
I stopped the video at ten seconds. The first words out of his mouth are what divides us today. Just climb, just hike, just get out and do it. No one cares about your skin color.
firewied “no one cares about your skin color” yet racism, colorism, and culture prejudice today in 2018. You may bat care but you don’t speak for everyone. I applaud your understanding and mindset. But you’re only one person
Please, so now even climbing is about race and racial division?
