  • Ashima Shiraishi is 14 years old. She's also the first woman and youngest climber of either gender to climb a sport route with a difficulty grade of 9a+ (5.15a). We spent a day with her in New York City as she discussed her ambitions and embarrassed grown men in the gym.

    Simply a testament to what natural ability + healthy parental support + discipline can achieve. Very impressive skills, indeed. Skills that will continue to develop, evolve and improve over her lifetime and climbing career. I can see why people stop and observe her ballet on the climbing wall. She is literally dancing on the wall and ceiling !

    Im an okay climber, every single time I go to the gym and get stuck on a problem. A random girl comes and flashes it (gets it first try) while I watch astounded. Every, single, time.

      @@Yosef9438 I don't think he's saying it in an egotistic manner, or comparing himself in a negative way. I think he is just making an honest comment on how impressive it is that girls often climb so well.

    Talent talent talent. All this talk about talent!
    I mean, of COURSE she's an incredibly talented climber, but I'm pretty sure that a fair share of her accomplishments are thanks to hard work.

      And how about the coaches she has had along the way. This video made it seem like she was self taught or something. Definitely NOT the case. Obe Carrion for example. He was a competition boulderer who coached her for a long while.

      sure there was a lot of work, but also a lot of talent is what is making her such a complete climber. I guess no one would be as good as ashima even if they train the same amount.

    I'm sure I'm not the first person to suggest this but she should really market those capri pants of hers. They are distinctly part of her identity and I'm sure with her growing popularity they could make her and any company prepared to associate them selves with her a pretty good bit of pocket change.

By the way, orthopedist refused and told them he will call a social worker on them :D

      +mjoto Well said :)

    • @cctdot120
      @cctdot120 8 років тому

      +mjoto well if it isnt a creator, what is nature? a person? it obvoisly needs a brain so athiests always contridict themselves

    • @ChrisProuse
      @ChrisProuse 8 років тому +10

      Cedric C I think you're missing his point. And atheist don't contradict themselves - they believe in scientific truth instead of man-made fairytales written in a book. People once believed the world was was flat, the solar system revolved around Earth, and Zeus god of the sky was responsible for throwing lightening bolts - those are all contradictions. But talent is a wonderful intersection between genetic aptitude and adapting to a particular environment over time. Though as mjoto eloquently put it, who cares - talent at this level is a rare and admirable thing that deserves our appreciation and respect.

    • @cctdot120
      @cctdot120 8 років тому

      yea, what makes something adapt? you missed my point. you dont have to beleive in the Bible to believe in a creator. there isnt anything there to make something adapt.

    • @ChrisProuse
      @ChrisProuse 8 років тому +7

      Cedric C Each time you learn something new, you build new neural pathways in your brain - actual neurons and brains cells aligning themselves to suit the environmental stimuli you're being subjected to - that's adaptation.
