- Ashima Shiraishi is 14 years old. She's also the first woman and youngest climber of either gender to climb a sport route with a difficulty grade of 9a+ (5.15a). We spent a day with her in New York City as she discussed her ambitions and embarrassed grown men in the gym.

Her dad is the best part of this video. So chill, eating his snacks
I see her and her dad sometimes at my gym and everyone stops climbing to watch her. it's so mesmerizing.
Gap bhadya
She's so humble yet so confident in her abilities
She has Ryan Honnolds vibes.
Omg how sweet can someone be???? Love her already!
I hope she realizes how rare and special it is to have a father like that. beautiful souls, both of them
You can see the inspiration in peoples' eyes when they watch her climb :)
Simply a testament to what natural ability + healthy parental support + discipline can achieve. Very impressive skills, indeed. Skills that will continue to develop, evolve and improve over her lifetime and climbing career. I can see why people stop and observe her ballet on the climbing wall. She is literally dancing on the wall and ceiling !
+Adam Shaiken stop brown-nosing.
Im an okay climber, every single time I go to the gym and get stuck on a problem. A random girl comes and flashes it (gets it first try) while I watch astounded. Every, single, time.
Stop comparing yourself to others, and you will climb better when you shed your ego.
@@Yosef9438 I don't think he's saying it in an egotistic manner, or comparing himself in a negative way. I think he is just making an honest comment on how impressive it is that girls often climb so well.
Same 😂
She is such an adorable and sweet girl. She makes proud just watching her :)
Her cute smile is contagious.💕
+Janel Crawford Yeah, she looks like a really nice person.
Simp
I really wish i got into rock climbing at a younger age. My dad never was into this sorta stuff. I hope i can get as good as some of these ppl
im starting today and im 16 and hope that i will carry it on 😂
Zachary Saxton I started when I was 11 and and im still 11 and climb v0-v6. I'm really close to 5.11s too
Paul Hanson Same! I started when I was 11 as well. I am now 13 and climb vo to v8
I started 3 months ago im 12 at 5.10ds
Grace Sawin yay same! Do you compete?
Talent talent talent. All this talk about talent!
I mean, of COURSE she's an incredibly talented climber, but I'm pretty sure that a fair share of her accomplishments are thanks to hard work.
True. She's worked hard to get to where she is. It's not just talent, but also years and years of pain, success, failure, and triumph.
And how about the coaches she has had along the way. This video made it seem like she was self taught or something. Definitely NOT the case. Obe Carrion for example. He was a competition boulderer who coached her for a long while.
sure there was a lot of work, but also a lot of talent is what is making her such a complete climber. I guess no one would be as good as ashima even if they train the same amount.
BlueBerryKing was thinking the same thing
And th fact that she weighs 80lbs
I'm sure I'm not the first person to suggest this but she should really market those capri pants of hers. They are distinctly part of her identity and I'm sure with her growing popularity they could make her and any company prepared to associate them selves with her a pretty good bit of pocket change.
+neil adlington her mom makes them :)
Her mother makes her clothes for her. I'm sure if climbing becomes a big enough sport, an investor will come in and help her open her own clothing line.
With the Olympics including climbing now, you can bet it's not a matter of "if", but "when"
she seems so kind and has an amazing talent. Can't wait to see where her career takes her. She Earned a fan here
These mini-docus are just incredible
She's so zen up there! Beautiful to watch.
And her dad brushing her hair and pulling it back for her warmed my heart. ❤️
i've tried some basic ass climbing and whats surprising is that even though it looks easy man i gotta tell you, that shit was hard
She's amazing. Part of me wishes that she and her father spoke more about the fun and adventure of climbing. They spoke more about "pushing the sport" and "achievement". I think her smile is a hint that she's enjoying herself, too.
Vice, this was shot beautifully. Keep up the good work!
I met her today and she was really nice!!!
And I met Donald Trump
Her dad is cool as fuck
her dad IS cool as fuck!
Dustin Smith Her "dad" is cool as fuck?!?
can I just say, I love how this was shor
shot*
+Lauren Great audio
It's a race between Ashima and Alex Puccio to see who will be the first women to climb V15. Can't wait to see who gets it done, so inspiring!
+V- Impossible : But Alex is full grown women while Ashima is a kid. A kid who is still growing. I'm affraid that in few years she will be unable to hold a pencil in her hands or tie her shoes :-( As a hobby climber I know parents of a boy who were at the orthopedic surgery asking for needling of their sons joints just before competition. By the way, orthopedist refused and told them he will call a social worker on them :D
Ashima
Cameron Lane well ashima has won that race now that she's climbed horizon
Love to see this coverage on vice. Nice.
she's a northface sponsored athlete too now
She has talent true. But let's not forget all her hard work either. Keep at it, you are amazing!
MUCH RESPECT Ashima ! ! !
She is so humble and inspiring, I've always wished to have an opportunity like this, often climbing tall trees and even though of as an act as I climbed to the top of a pole in a city park once as a child. Watching these videos make me very happy and nostalgic!
Thanks for more of this gifted climber.
Now I know why I feel like watching her dance as she climbs. It's her dad's influence. Graceful.
This is great! Climbing is such a fun activity, climbing played a huge part in my last few years in college. Such a great atmosphere
Aww what a sweetheart! totally made me miss climbing even more. Most certainly an inspiration :)
I climbed for the first time like a week ago and my forearms still hurt..
Zelios That will happen. When you start to climb more the soreness will go away sooner. It's all just apart of climbing.
Zelios do your arms still hurt?
Emma Malka well I mean it was 3 years ago, so not anymore thankfully.
Zelios hahaha ik it was just a joke
@@zelios2361 Real question is did you keep climbing
So much respect.
This human was designed to be great at this. If its God if its nature... Does not matter because it is beautiful to watch talent. Talent has no face, race or gender. Talent is beauty.
+mjoto Well said :)
+mjoto well if it isnt a creator, what is nature? a person? it obvoisly needs a brain so athiests always contridict themselves
Cedric C I think you're missing his point. And atheist don't contradict themselves - they believe in scientific truth instead of man-made fairytales written in a book. People once believed the world was was flat, the solar system revolved around Earth, and Zeus god of the sky was responsible for throwing lightening bolts - those are all contradictions. But talent is a wonderful intersection between genetic aptitude and adapting to a particular environment over time. Though as mjoto eloquently put it, who cares - talent at this level is a rare and admirable thing that deserves our appreciation and respect.
yea, what makes something adapt? you missed my point. you dont have to beleive in the Bible to believe in a creator. there isnt anything there to make something adapt.
Cedric C Each time you learn something new, you build new neural pathways in your brain - actual neurons and brains cells aligning themselves to suit the environmental stimuli you're being subjected to - that's adaptation.
She's blossoming into a lovely woman. Her voice is so soothing
wtf
Creepy
Her dad stretching with her, doing her hair, and coaching her... so cute
Love how she hasnt changed her hairstyle. Keep rocking the bangs for life.
Woooaah, her arms!!
free 4x porno domican girl
i think we forget what we are caple of when we let thoughts get in the way "i cant" "why even try" she is a testament to just shutting off and doing. just do it
Dope! Love this kind of stuff
i like her speaking voice. 😅
went rock climbing for the first time and that shit is really hard and frightening once you reach the top.
She is amazing. I just started climbing for fun and I have never been so sore. Its such a great hobby
Ashima is my climbing idol. She's so interesting to watch, and she is soooo good. I watched a video she was in when she was 8, and even then she had it. She is one of the reasons that I climb, because I want to be as good as her.
she looks sooo calm and peaceful.
She's so modest..
You go girl!
Amazing girl.. and father!
'We spent a day with her in New York City as she discussed her ambitions and embarrassed grown men in the gym.' ahahahaha gotta love Vice
so dope, respect!
Her smile is so natural so beautiful
She makes it all look so easy 😂 it's so graceful
it's a nice video👌and you tell that she has a high IQ on how to position herself on every holds and reach the top of the boulder..👏👏
Would be great to have more parents supporting their kids in this fashion.. she is lucky to have a father like that
いっつも励まされてます。
応援してます。
She’s such an inspiration
amazing!
Well spoken and apparently well raised, hard to come by these days. Cheers Ashima.
i wish i had started climbing when i was longer but there was no where to learn until now
That's amazing! Ay was I the only one who got scared real quick at 5:03 then saw the guy land and was like, oh those people standing are on the same plane lol.
I'm visiting NY and just went to the cliffs!
I cant believe she offered the crew cookies. Thats so incredibly nice
you have a good head on your shoulders ashima. keep doing what you do best. =]
I love the sweet climber, love the climbing club, love the video!

You are incredible
Her dad is so cool.
So cute her dad did her hair
Is there a place to find out what pre-climbing routine Ashima does? and the stretches that her dad came up with for pre-climb?
And now she is like world champion at the age of 15
Wow she is already a sponsored pro. Very impressive what she is doing hopefully she has a long career!
Holy crap she supplanted Sasha as the best female sport climber in the world? Holy crap, she's like a female Ondra or something.
rushthezeppelin Sasha has never been the “best” female climber
great !
I just went to Brocken Boulder
U know, I sometimes wonder why I rock climb even when I'm absolutely terrified of hights
I think we know it's because it's kickass. Super fun on the way up and there's a cool view from the top. If you're doing it safely and fail, then you have a goal to work towards.
Nice!!!
anybody now what the track at the end is??
what model of evolv shoes she is wearing
I recently started climbing and I want to be like her someday
If you are older than 14, your chances are slim
Nice kid. Made me relaxed.
Too gooe
