- Max Payne was one of the most foundational shooter games of the PS2/PS3 generation, and so we're examining the final installment in a somewhat thorough and (hopefully) entertaining way.
It is one of the darkest shooter games of all time, and a quintessential 'ugly' game. Viewer discretion advised.

One thing I've noticed is Max actually switches weapons faster when you use the weapon wheel with focus active, like the animation plays at near full speed despite everything else being slowed down. I think it's trying to get you to play reactively, emptying your magazine down to the last round and then scrambling with whatever resources you have available to find a solution. But the enemy behavior encourages you to shoot very proactively, disabling them with easier shot placement to give yourself time to be more precise with your follow up and conserve focus for desperate situations. There's a sort of back and forth flow to the contrast between the two playstyles. Once you realize how to take advantage of these systems it makes the genre a lot more enjoyable even if you're not very precise
You're so good at making these. I think you could become one of the greats of videogame essays and retrospective. Stoked for more
