shout out! I'm also disabled, and here in NH. I really am enjoying the videos also. If you have a local historic society, they are often really nice about helping out with questions about local homes and history. Keene has murals, from a mural project (where a town is picked each year to have historic murals made), and it's a delight for people that visit as you can walk around town and just learn so much history from the beautiful murals.

Well, I think John Murray Spear sounds freaking awesome. If he really wanted to build an electric robot messiah and supercharge it with spiritual magic, I say they should have let him.
He clearly seems to have had some delusional thoughts and ideas. But when you look at all the new inventions and discoveries that were being made in the field of electricity during his lifetime, you can see why it may have seemed like magic to him, and have gotten the idea that it had the potential to usher in a new golden age. Also I love the way he constantly repeats words in his writings- you can tell he learned his rhetorical playbook as a preacher, and almost hear him banging his fist on the lectern for emphasis.

I don't know what drives you as a creator, but I feel a kinship with you.
I have a lot of difficulty with mortality and death, and often have been driven to create myself, sometimes to ensure I leave something worthwhile behind. Selfish, but, this thinking has led me to remember people who have been all but lost to the consciousness of their fellow man, but saddest of all, even their own loved ones.
Hearing you tell so many stories, I can't help but see something like this in you. The asylum graveyard of numbers. The residents of Dogtown. And in this video, of Mr. Spear, who I will never forget, and I thank you for that. Your work, which is much more than I think you credit yourself for, is truly an antidote to the oppressor of all humanity: death, in the physical realm, but even worse, in the minds of those who remain.
I have many of my own ways of remembering the stories of people and places, small, private, and generally in secret. You are a conservationist of the most wonderful sort for someone like me, and have found such a great calling to be able to have done it for the world to see. It makes me feel better, and in return, I will not keep you and your stories a secret, but share them whenever I can.
From one storyteller to another, thank you.

As soon as you mentioned progressive my ears perked up. In 1851 Herbert Spencer published his first book Social Statics. Human history was interpreted as a process of species and societal progress. People had witnessed great change due to the industrial revolution. The idea of progress was present within society, but it was Spencer who developed a synthetic philosophy that provided explanation. Spencer theorized that the universe and all life operated under the general principle of progress.
The connection to Spear is or could be; that a new great age is about to begin. This new age will be brought about by a spiritually powered, technological utopia for humanity. There were many utopian religious movements during the mid 1800s as well. Wishing it had worked - so true.

I've been watching a ton of your videos over the past couple days-- most recently this one and the one about the 6 day roller skating race-- and I just have to say thank you. This is probably going to make very little sense, but, as someone who went through a very violent near-death experience a couple years ago and who still deals with PTSD, it's been a struggle to still find meaning and beauty in the world. Sometimes, at my lowest points, everything good in the world has felt completely overshadowed by horror and ugliness-- by the knowledge that terrible things also exist.
But stories like these provide an antidote to that kind of hopeless poison, somehow. The way you tell people's stories, including the stories of people who've been forgotten or misunderstood, reminds me how much a life can mean. And it reminds me that other people out there *also* see how much human life can mean. It's a kind of comfort I've found very few places. So thank you.

Interesting, every time someone talks of Spear they focus on the weird part of his beliefs (the Golem machine if you want) and when mentioned, his social ideas are told en passant. It is incredible how ahead of its time eh was, how compassionate he was. I confess that I found the video boring at first but Spear character was so galvanizing (pun interned) that I needed to see it all.

There are people with similar outlandish and supernatural ideas of potential endless free energy sources today and while I can't say of them have convinced me any of their ideas have merit their sincerity and honest desire to help the human race simply because of their love for their fellow humans is quite touching. He sounds like an amazing man disrespected by history and I found this story incredible and your respect for his life quite touching. I am perpetually amazed at just how awesome and interesting you videos are and while incredibly sad there are so few people as smart and curious as you are, I'm just so happy that you exist and are proof that there are still humans out here just doing what humans arguably best. Tell stories and remember the (almost) forgotten.

some of what Spear was talking about reminded me of Nikola Tesla's more obscure beliefs and goals, such as using Wardenclyffe Tower to generate virtually infinite energy, and his general interest in trying to contact life on other planets (he supposedly received a signal from either Mars or Jupiter's moon Io).

May I ask what GNU means?

    • @Bronythepony
      @Bronythepony Місяць тому +2

@@dinosinspaceIt’s a reference to the Terry Pratchett Discworld novel Going Postal. In it there’s a system of semaphore towers which function analogously to a telegraph system in our world. The code GNU indicates that the message being sent should turn around and be retransmitted at the end of the line, essentially keeping it in permanent rotation. There is a tradition among the semaphore operators to transmit a GNU signal with the name of a dead colleague to keep them riding the system as “a man is not dead while his name is still spoken.” Good book. Good series. Give it a go if you like fantasy hijinks.

You have a great channel, the topics and way you cover them is very unique. Are you a historian by any chance? This feels like the sort of thing a professional historian would do, but instead of presenting them on academic publications you do them on UA-cam.
What an amazing man Spear was, despite being a spiritualist, despite being religious, he was arguably one of the most progressive people in existence at the time. It is kind of disappointing that this man existed about 200 years ago, preached about the equality of sexes and race, about the human rights everybody inherently has, even prisoners, and today we still debate about those same things, though of course we have advanced a lot since then I still feel like we haven’t done enough. If Spear were alive today he would still have a lot of work to do.

Spear sounds like an awesome human being, thank you for humanizing him and telling us his story. It's unfortunate he got caught up in Spiritualism since so many of his important social ideas were lost in the nonsense. Based on the description of the aftermath of the attack in Portland it almost sounds like he received a traumatic brain injury at that time, which could have played into his later belief that he was receiving messages, which would be all the more tragic.

He definitely had something not right mentally with everything related to spiritualism, but the strength of his convictions is strong and just. The world he envisioned is one I wish I lived in.

I think you vastly overestimate how busy we are. We are all sitting around waiting for your next hour long video.
Television is nose diving into the toilet. There’s shit movies being mass manufactured.
The world is starving for good content and entertainment. This video was beautiful.

Really interesting story. I wonder how he must have felt coming back after the attempt at creating this wondrous source of energy failed. That's always what I think of when i hear stories like this, what the people might feel after and how they continue their work.

What a wonderful man! I think if he truly healed people it is because he was true, childlike and purely unselfish.
He did what we all should do if we can-instead of complaining about something he did what he could about it. Don't like homeless people? Pick someone and give them a home if you can! If it doesn't work out keep trying. When I housed a whole string of homelwss punk rockers not a single one stole from me. They knew I had been a homeless teen punk too so they respected that. I didn't just get lucky, they were family to me. Take care of people your heart goes out to and if one of them succeeds they will probably help someone in turn. I've seen it with my own eyes.
I have a new addition to my all time favorite people list. Thank you so much for inttroducing me to him!

The closing statement really hit me as someone who'd heard the story and just laughed at him for his silly machine. I wish it worked, and I wish more people listened to him.

What an amazing researcher and presenter you are. Thank you. ..... I can't help but compare Mr Spears story to that of the incredible Nikola Tesla. Born more or less at the same time and both with a passionate obsession of electricity although with very different personalities. One can only speculate as to what the two of them could have come up with. I will now remember Mr Spears as I will you and your channel. Cheers.

An embodiment of the Beatitudes and a model for the way a true Christian should behave. Such a shame his kind is so rare.
...and it's also a shame his creation didn't work.

What a wonderful, fascinating human being! And I'm sure I never would have know about him if it wasn't for you and your great channel. I feel like he must have just spent most of his adult life on a constant daily search for ways to help those most in need and if nothing else I admire his determination. I wonder how his energy-woo beliefs would have played out had he been born in a different time?
I conserve archival documents for a living and the sort of primary history research you do reminds me why I care about what I do. Because I'm sure there are still some life stories as worthy of telling as John Murray Spear's but they need to be discovered by the historians who still visit the actual archives and because people before us thought to retain the original documents, even the ones that don't seems so historic at the time.
Anyway, I love your work and I'll be sharing and looking forward to all future updates.

"Away, AWAY, with those old customs."
We do so much damage to each other because of the inertia of custom, and it's modern incarnation, nostalgia.
