- Matthew Searle, the chief executive of a missing persons charity helping the family of Jay Slater, says he plans to talk to the home secretary about how to deal with amateur detectives.
Mr Searle says online comments and speculation about what happened to Jay were the worst he had seen in more than 20 years in the job.

I agree with the above. Although the mother pretending her son is missing as part of an elaborate scheme to pocket the go fund me was a bit harsh. Understand Jays a wrong-un, but got to feel sympathy for the hurt she must feel of a missing and presumed dead son

The mother is just trying to milk as much of the gofund as possible. repatriation costs are max 5k and say she spends 10k on funeral still shes left with plenty of money but shes just wrote on the gofund that any more donations welcome to me thats just being greedy your son has been found obviously not the outcome we wanted but hes found and looks like people have donated more than enough to cover the funeral and the repatriation costs then why keep asking for more? Lots of unanswered questions about this whole story. Some of his actions might have had consequences he never envisioned. The main one should be what was he doing before and after he left his friends and ventured out on his own.

The true crime community aren't discussing these cases for the families to read - they're discussing within their own online communities, per their interest in true crime (and missing people) cases. Maybe it's time for online communities to become private and gated. It's the job of mainstream media to report on accurate facts, so people have somewhere to go if they're not sure about what some social media post is purporting.

My condolences to Jays family, I have been following this since he first went missing and hoped for a happy ending, I have been appalled at the comments made from people that should know better forgetting about his family and what they have been going through. Rest in peace Jay💔
Please stop this ridiculous gaslighting, Mark Williams Thomas was working with the family and he put out a request for information on social media, people were legitimately responding to that request. A senior ex Met police officer also told everyone to 'assume it is murder until proven otherwise.' Mark Williams Thomas always said accident was the working assumption but he was remaining open minded due to other information he has received.

So, not only was Jay a plastic gangster that thought it was funny being in court for trying to slice up someone with a machete, he was a drug dealer, a drug user and went missing on holiday after robbing someone of a Rolex watch. No mention is being made of whether he still had the watch when he was found but is Searle thinks it is 'impropper' for us law abiding people to question whether he met his end at the hands of those who wanted their watch back? Maybe we should be asking how much of the donated £60,000 Searle has pocketed to pontifate at us.

He wasn't a good boy, he was involved in an horrific attack, used a machete. It is not surprising that people have questions. He is not a sympathetic victim, sorry but he just isn't. dont know about this guys "charity" but when the bosses of so some so called charities are on hundreds of thousands of pounds salary and take half the donation money as expences the charities need to be publicly held to account and criticised in the comments on social media so people can make a more informed opinion before donating just look at the RNLI lifeboat charity that is allegedly just now a taxi service in the english channel when people donated to the go fund me page for this missing person the public i believe was not fully informed by the main stream media about this persons criminal history that might have influenced their donations by not revealing it people were commentating about his criminal history that might have been relevant in finding him and to make the public more informed which is a important part of social media

Sadly, though not at all fair, the family left themselves open to negative comments.
From what's been reported, and verified, Jay was quite a "character" and not in a nice way. He made some very inappropriate choices, and kept highly dubious company, but no matter what, he did not "deserve" to die.
It's very sad that his young life ended the way it did, and without doubt the tragedy will haunt his family for the rest of their lives, but perhaps it's now time to stop reporting on Jay, his lifestyle, and now his death...it's the only way to stop the vitriol
