Good: Talk about your concert experiences without putting someone down, saving seats for someone, feel free to sing and dance your heart out…
Bad: Pushing people in attempt to get closer to the stage, constantly talking during performer’s set, putting your phone up for a long period of time, booing…

    2 rules I always follow:
1.) as obvious as it sounds, if someone falls in a mosh pit, help them back up
2.) it’s okay to film parts (like 15-30 seconds of 1-2 songs an artist). There’s no need to go overboard, sticking to your phone the whole time takes the experience away

I recorded a couple of times either intros or some songs for 2 or 3 shows when phones started to get "good", then realized I never looked at the recordings except for when I just got back from the show then never again. I've seen clips of bands and artists, like Dave Grohl berating fans at a Foo Fighters concert for having their phones out at the concert. The concert going experience has obvious reflections of what is wrong with society. Im not saying that people shouldn't take videos and take pictures. It's just apparently, people need to learn how to be decent human beings in public, because it is sad that people would much rather have 15 minutes of fame, and virility, from complete strangers than an actual campfire conversation with family at Thanksgiving.
P.s. My thing is when going to a concert, take pictures, but most importantly have ACTUAL FUN, wailing songs at the top of your lungs with what the band and/or artist is singing on stage. Engage with the band. But NEVER overuse your phone at a concert.... same thing goes for sporting events, movie theaters, etc

Also I agree with you. I've seen guys in front of me constantly posting to Facebook and getting literally no engagement. It's really dumb! You don't have to document every little detail of a show you're at, especially when people on your friends list generally don't care about the act you're seeing. It also becomes a pain to delete years of these posts when you hopefully decide to clean up your social media for a job interview. It also adds to the cringe when you look back at them years later!

This actually gave me an idea for a comedy sketch, thank you for giving me inspiration man!
As for my two cents on the topic, this may sound boomer-ish, but people who would rather live their lives through a screen than being there in person makes me glad I'm not super reliant on my phone or social media all the time.
I find it funny (not haha funny, but more so depressing) that those people types of people would often see the artist/band through the Internet, but when they decide to go see them performing live in person, they go back to seeing them on the small screen. Therefore, creating the exact same metaphorical distance between them. Especially when it comes to how concerts are priced nowadays, they paid a butt-load of cash just to show off to "everybody" and try to be the center of attention.
The whole point of going to a concert is to be a FAN, not paparazzi.

  • @karacoconutag
    @karacoconutag 2 роки тому +1

Agreed! I'm a big proponent of taking a singular shot at the beginning of the show, and then putting your phone away for the rest of the performance. Constantly questioning if what you're seeing now is better than the shot you took a few minutes ago. Or, just take none at all! I look back at my concert singular photos regularly, but I'm sure if I took several or many photos of each concert, I've never revisit them at all.

If I were running a concert, my strict policy for the concertgoers is to either use the phone to only take pictures, keep their eyes on the concert, and not update their Facebook or Twitter on a specific band or artist on a minute-by-minute basis. If you can't be courteous and considerate to other concertgoers, then I don't want you at the venue that I'll be performing in, if I get any gigs. I know that would alienate several patrons, but that's to ensure the enjoyment of the concert from other people. This policy is inspired by a similar policy from a cinema chain called the Alamo Drafthouse.

When you are handling your phone you're only paying half attention to the actual performance. The performance is gone while you are trying to fuck with your camera. Your attention is not even really there.

Now with cellular distraction in visual, audio, and spiritual realms it is fragmented and dissonant. Watch an old stones show filmed in a small venue, or deep purple show. Whenever I’m at concerts I always take videos. But it’s always the the first minute or so of maybe my favorite songs, then I’ll put my phone away and enjoy the rest of the song. If I’m close, I might also get more videos or pictures of cool or unique moments, and I actually do go back and rewatch videos I’ve taken of some of the best shows that I’ve ever been to pretty often, because I actually do kinda cherish some of the memories I’ve made. Sometimes I post on my snap story, and sometimes I don’t. Whenever I do, it’s always a short clip of each band that I see. Last week I saw Alice in Chains, Breaking Benjamin, and Bush, and I didn’t even think to put AIC on my story, even though I did put Bush and Breaking Benjamin on my story, and AIC was the band that I was most excited to see. When I was at the Hella Mega tour last year, I took so many pictures and videos because Weezer and Green Day are my 2 favorite bands, and seeing them on the same night was incredible. Next month some friends and I are going to Firefly fest in Delaware, but we only bought one day passes for the day that MCR is headlining because most of the bands we want to see are also playing that day. I decided that I’m gonna go back the next day alone because Green Day is heading, despite not caring much for the other bands on the lineup, and rewatching my Hella Mega tour videos is what convinced me do do so.

This reminds me of two musicians who have very strict rules with cell phones at concerts. One is Jack White, who does what a few stand-up comedians do and has his audience put their phones in a Yondr pouch before the show so they can be in the moment with the music and not play on their phones. If you want to use your phone, you step outside and have a staffer unlock the pouch, but you have to put it back before you re-enter. That happened when I saw the Raconteurs (one of Jack's side-bands), and I'm positive it'll happen with Jack's upcoming tour. I'm not sure if other musicians actively do the Yondr pouch thing, but I at least know Jack does.
The other is Maynard James Keenan, who puts things throughout the shows for all 3 of his bands that you're prohibited from using your phone period at the show. There were signs all over the place about that when I saw TOOL right before the pandemic, saying you'd be removed from the venue if you had your phone out during it. I've also heard stories of something similar at Perfect Circle and Puscifer shows... with people actually getting ejected from them. Now, with some TOOL shows, he apparently does a thing where he'll let you take pictures/record the very last song (I'm not sure if he does that for the others too), but he's apparently very strict with the phone thing too.

So I wanna have fun & remember the special events. I don't wanna look back & only remember what it looked like through my phone. You miss so much doing that.
In October 2021 I went to my 1st post covid show & it turned out being the best I'd ever been to. My favorite band member when scanning the crowd stopped & stared directly into my face for what felt like awhile but was probably only 3 seconds & if I had been on my phone I wouldn't have that memory & would have missed so many others from that night.

This is how concerts should be handled IMO, especially in a standing crowd or small theater setting. Stadium concerts are a much better place for phone filming, as those behind you are slightly higher up. Even then, I'd keep the filming short.

My general thing is that I'll take a selfie or two before the show starts, and I'll record a short clip from any songs I really love, maybe even the majority of it if it's a particular favorite, but my personal rule is that I won't watch the show THROUGH the phone. I press record and look at the screen for a sec to make sure the angle is okay and then I leave it and watch the stage with my own eyes.
As you can imagine, that footage often doesn't end up looking too great, but like you said, I really will only watch it occasionally. But any recordings I take really are only to remember it by. I hardly ever post about personal events and stuff like that on social media. I'll talk about it to some friends on Discord, usually just saying how great a show was after the fact, but I never really post anything.

It's sad how people are willing to spend up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars to go to a concert just to spend the whole time on their phones recording. Not only does that take you out of the moment but it also creates a barrier between you and the artist. As a muscian, it definitely takes something out of a performance when I look into the crowd and all I see are statues with their phones up. I would much rather see people dancing or moving around than filming the performance any day. Just enjoy the show and be happy with the memories, a few pics or vids here or there is fine, but please don't be phone zombie.

But especially for bands like rage against the machine who haven’t toured in god knows how long because who knows if this is going to be their last tour. Instances like that when there is an artist that’s an outlier and I feel like I need to record more than one song or something. Other than that I’ll just get one for each band.

Sometimes I take a video if it's a song I have a really special connection with, but for rare occasions.

I'm just not into taking videos with my phone in general. When I first got a decent digital camera, and later an iPod Touch/iPhone with reasonable enough video quality, I enjoyed the novelty of being able to record entire songs at concerts I went to, but I'd generally save it for the smaller shows (when the sound would be more stripped down and there wouldn't a huge audience hollering through the entire thing), and even then I'd only record one or two songs that were personal favorites and/or rare setlist appearances. I generally figure these days that if a song's popular, there are going to be TONS of amateur videos of a band playing it, and even if it's a deep cut, someone will probably put a better version of it up on UA-cam than I ever could with my crappy several-generations-old phone and shaky hands. So I mostly just take photos at what I think are iconic moments during the performance, I'll put the phone away for long stretches of time in between, and 90% of what I get is gonna turn out to be crap later, so I'll post the few pictures that actually turn out halfway decent to Facebook for (if I'm lucky) the three or so friends who might actually care that I saw a certain band, and dump the rest. If a band or a venue does not want phones out during the show, though, I'll respect that.
As annoying as it is when you see people with their phones recording EVERYTHING, the flipside of that is that it's nice to go on UA-cam and find out how a band pulls off a song that you really like live, whether they change up the arrangement, how it went with a special guest at a certain show, that sort of thing. Or if you're really lucky, you'll find old (and actually watchable) footage of a show you were at years ago. That came in handy not too long ago in a Facebook group where we were each posting lists of favorite songs from concerts we'd actually been to, and if possible, including links to live footage instead of just the still frame "videos" of the studio versions.

I see this all the time at not just concerts, but every sort of live event. I've even seen people do this stuff at movie theaters, which is even more annoying since you're asked multiple times to put your phone on silent or turn it off. Anyway, I might take a couple of pictures when I'm at show, but that's it. Otherwise, my phone is in my pocket and I'm enjoying myself. I feel like those people who just watch the show through their screens are not only distracting other people, but they're also just wasting their own money. They're depriving themselves of the full experience. People just don't want to remember things anymore. It's all about the social media clout and it's pretty depressing.

You can imagine how many phones were out. But concert etiquette, at least for me, mainly falls under moving forward because a lot of us had to keep our spots and we were there through 4 openers in 3 hours and people were like "can I move forward? I gotta meet up with my crew." And I hadn't seen them at all until half way through $uicideboy$ set. That is what mainly urks me at shows.

Even with my kid, friends, and family, it's not about constant photos to show others or get lost in a cloud. Live for the moment and the now. Jump on someone and crowd surf, bounce around, have fun. It's seemingly dimming down over the years little by little. I've seen well over 300 bands in little life.

There's a whole subgenre of concert etiquette on heavy music (on smaller venues) that I think it's really interesting and it's a good example to borrow from. The whole "If someone falls down, pick'em up" or "dont raise your elbows too much on a circle Pit" are probably products of years of violent incidents and injuries that passed through generations as some sort of culture of it's own, so nowadays most people that are aware of those rules, are also pretty fine with following it. I believe that the cellphone recording thing will follow similar steps from now on. As these rules are being written, some years from now they will be just normal concert behavior for most.

It's normal to post about going to see a band on social media - I've actually managed to find friends who are also attending that way - but posting constantly about it and taking long videos are actually going to rob you of enjoying the experience first-hand, which is always going to be more fun than watching it back on your phone. I take the odd short video at gigs but having enough battery power in case I need to make a call on the way home is a lot more important!

My concert etiquette with taking pictures or videos is a little out there. Generally, when I go to a concert, I like to take one or two videos of my favorites from that band, and I mean full videos. I know there are many people out there that will take videos they’ll never watch again but I find myself going back to my videos a lot. And, 90% of the time, the videos are for myself, as I rarely post them. If I am fortunate enough to see the same band multiple times, I don’t need more videos of the same song, so I naturally hold my phone up less. That, plus a couple of pictures is enough for me, as I get a lot of the experience of a concert, plus nice memories to go back and look at again.
With all that in mind, I am also guilty of taking too many videos at the occasional show, but even then, I’m not holding my phone up for the entire show, maybe just a couple extra songs or just small clips.
Lots of people will take way too many videos of a show, but generally it doesn’t disturb me much, unless they’re severely blocking my view or they’re literally recording the whole concert.
And as an extra note, I like being in general admission, but I don’t like mosh pits. Despite that, if a mosh pit “ruins” a video, or I can’t bother to take a video because of one, so be it. I can’t stop them and they’re enjoying the show in their own way.
Basically, I don’t ever want to be the asshole at any concert, but at the same time, I cherish the ability to look back at some of my own videos of my favorite shows, so regarding this whole situation, I’m torn somewhere in the middle.

I'm an avid roller coaster enthusiast, and I unfortunately see people doing this on moving amusement rides from time to time. Of course, it's worse on amusement rides because unsecured phones and cameras are safety hazards, especially on rides that have rapid changes in speed and direction like roller coasters, and are thus not allowed on most rides. Of course, some kids choose to ignore the rules and try to take videos and selfies on moving roller coasters. I've had a couple rides where I had to tell kids who were sitting in front of me to put their phones away for the reason specified above.

At times when almost every single band or artist barely ever come to Malaysia to play for us, and when I couldn't afford a plane trip just to watch them play in any parts of the world, I started to appreciate the fans and concert-goers for sharing the experience on UA-cam a little more. Especially those that actually recorded their entire tracklist with good quality videos and audios.
But at the same time, if I were to get the chance to go to one (at all), well I would be lying if I say I would never pull my phone out and record. But I don't think I would pull my phone high up until it ruins the view for others.
I've seen one comment here where a band doesn't allow phones at their shows, and if it's within the rule, I have no problem comply to it and hope that my memory won't fail me.
In the end, it's all about manners and courtesy. If given the chance to record, try not to be an s/o to others that want to enjoy the shows without seeing those phones sticking out like sore thumbs. If there are rules apply to this matter, then we should at least respect the rules.

When I go to a show, I am into the show: I am up dancing and singing (not aloud, obviously) and enjoying myself. When the person behind me taps me on the should and says they can't see because I am up enjoying myself (I'm 5'2, not tall), and they are sitting in their seats, it's all I can do not to call them out their name. Blond Jon! I have a huge rule against having your phone out a the entire time at a concert and I usually try to pass that along with whoever I'm going with, typically they have a similar mindset so it's not usually a big deal. The only time you'll see my phone raised in the air is when it's being used as a makeshift lighter. Another big rule I have is to actually stand up and dance a little for the openers, like I understand conservating energy for the headliner, but I feel like its rude to not give the opening acts any type of reaction or if the crowd's being a real dick. It's understandable if you don't know every word or don't wanna scream your head off, but to just dance a little. Like I remember back in 2018 when Paramore was touring on After Laughter and they had Soccer Mommy and Foster the People open for them and Hayley having to make some kind of announcement to respect the opening band while Soccer Mommy was performing.

My general thought is I am cool as long as you don't get in the way of others. Like my dad likes to record songs here and there for him it is more on the memories/remember (he has never posted anything he has taken kinda funny really). But anyway sometimes he "bullies" me into doing a song here and there so I do my best to make sure I am not blocking others view or bothering with the flash no real point to it. I actually have one of the pictures I took as a desktop background now lol, if I do post something it is more one picture and the day after (or several I don't pay much attention to social media) and more as an excuse for me to talk about the concert again.
Anyway ya just as long as you are not in the way of other people I am fine.
Side thought I find it interesting that when talks of being in the moment of the show people never bring up drinking or drugs. Like I had gone to shows where my sister was not only so drunk she didn't remember them at all but I had to carry her back to the car. I saw Kraftwerk recently and the amount of people just smoking everyone out at during that concert was .... annoying. Weed and my brain don't agree with each other so the end half of that show was nothing but torment for me because of it. Kraftwerk were great but it did actually ruin it for me having to spend most of my time from completely losing it because the drug everybody loves makes me violently paranoid.
I assume that for both of those scenarios it is just a matter of time, people have always done it so it is an ok expected thing. Filming and pictures is different when there was a high cost ceiling few people did it but now everybody can and for whatever reason though I know most watching the people doing go with social media attention as appose to anything else (and they can be right just sometimes it isn't). Which I find kinda funny cause back in the early 00s for people that filmed and posted it it was always done so people who weren't there can enjoy it but that was still at that point of high cost ceiling for doing it.
Alright sorry for rambling I just have many thoughts on the subject and I am a very poor writer, I am cool with a lot as long as it isn't in the way of others and filming and pictures tends to be at the bottom of my personal "annoying the fuck out of me personally at concerts" list.

Don't get me wrong: I have taken a few photos and videos, but I feel like it detracts from the experience. I paid to watch a good show, not to focus on getting a recording just right to watch later. I'm very in the moment when it comes to concerts. Besides, the few times I did attempt to record at a concert, the audio sounded terrible. I'd rather experience something great to remember later than have something to prove I was there. That's just me!

On making video, I think it depends on the show and the culture of the fans. With The Warning, there’s an international fan base and people really like watching video and especially live streams of the shows. So it’s very common to film a whole show and people will watch those uploads. It helps that most of these are small venues where sometimes the person with the phone is just a few feet from the stage. In this case the band is cool with recordings. Personally I prefer to experience a show mostly without the phone.

Being at the show and remembering it by memory is better than actually looking at the footages. That goes the same thing for any other form of memory that you have like Christmases and birthday parties.

I saw that some concert venues have got these packs that are supposed to hold your phones in them and keep them in there during the concert.
My school got them as well (which is how I found out about it) If a place adults are supposed to go has to do something to them that people usually do with minors, that's shows a lack of maturity in some people.

when my mom went to see Jack White they did something similar! I'm hoping when I see MCR its not that bad but I only take a few pictures and record bits of my favorite songs or some of the funny banter between the bands and the audience.

I am guilty of hitting the REC button at shows haha. I always uploaded them to my Instagram story, and took millions of pictures as well, but come to find, I don't even look at or watch them! 😄
I still post videos of concert snippets on my podcast's Instagram stories as a means of sharing the name of the bands and basic networking.

5 clips of no longer than 10 seconds each maximum per concert and I never hold my phone above my own eye level. I know others will still think this is excessive but I love showing off all the shows I go to!

I use to film a lot at concerts when I was in my early teens. I film one video for each band now and I’m so much happier to be in the moment. Also Ice Nine Kills is insane live I adore them
