I had been out of high school almost two years and had my whole life in front of me. I look back and wonder how did it all go by so fast. This is a typical song of that time. You never know how good you actually had it until it's all behind you.
Dick and DeeDee had great voices and wonderful smiles. The high falsetto voice of Dick in combination with DeeDee's trilling soprano voice was unique. Lou Christie, Frankie Valli and Gene Pitney we're doing similar vocals on their recordings at the same time.
Look at all those clean cut kids in the audience! Man, was THAT a different time! No stage rush, no mosh pits, just kids loving the music and the performers.
Loved these songs, and was fascinated by DeeDee. She always seemed like she was having a blast. Cute as a button, and seemed like a whippersnapper. Many blessings.
Yeah you took the words right out of my mouth, I feel sorry for the younger generation nowadays they missed out on the Creative Renaissance of our youth we knew as the 60s, The only sad thing is we're dropping like flies…
+Marrowbones I had a radio show for 12 years. Other than that, what can we do about it? Thank God for UA-cam to help spread the word! My daughter discovered 60s music pretty much on her own. when younger people discover older music, they're amazed that such music even exist, because they don't hear it on the radio, for example. The music then sounds like a symphony compared to the music out now, just check out the top 10 for almost any date before 1980 and it's completely different then modern stuff. I suggest starting your own educational shows or resources finding ways to expose it, I always wanted to start my own TV channel, and I actually met someone who was interested in funding it, ages ago. Any ideas? Today's technology should offer lots more resources/exposure.
Sixty years ago today on September 25th, 1961 "The Mountain's High" by Dick and Dee Dee peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Top 100 chart, for the two weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for those two weeks was "Take Good Care of My Baby" by Bobby Vee... "The Mountain's High" reached #37 on the United Kingdom's Singles chart... Between 1961 and 1965 the California duo had eight records on the Top 100 chart, one made the Top 10, the above "The Mountain's High"... "Who Put The Bomp (In the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)" by Barry Mann #8. "My True Story" by The Jive Five #9. "Without You" by Johnny Tillotson #10. "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" by Elvis Presley Note: Three records in the above Top 10 were recorded on June 26th, 1961 at RCA Studio 'B' on 1611 Roy Acuff Place in Nashville, Tennessee. Roy Orbison's "Crying" {at #4}, Elvis' "Little Sister {at #6}, and his "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" {at #10}...
Awesome song! This was before my time, but I love how they harmonize & both have great voices + beautiful smiles. They look like they're enjoying themselves.
This iconic tune continues to be a favorite. I was a sophomore in college when I bought their album - and I still have it. The modern computer is a marvelous invention. I can click a mouse and instantly listen to all of my favorite music! from the 1950's to present. Thanks!!
Strange thing; I was 4 years old when Thou shalt not steal came out, and I can even remember WHERE I was when I first heard it !! Loved this song then, love it even more now !!!
No matter how much stress I have to bare in my job at the prison--When I get home and listen to music like this it just dissolves all my troubles away. I'll have do some research on this
12/30/20- Sweet! Dee Dee's expressions tell joy and sweetness. Born in 1958 I grew up with this song The Mountain's High. Thought of it the other day after listening to Malt Shop favorites on cable TV and have had it in my head for days. Love it. Saw video interview of her on Tube, awesome.
Just started high school when this song came on the radio & my friends & I immediately went to the record store where we could go in the small booths & listen before buying. Well, my friends & I bought it. D &D were really in sync - one of the best boy/girl "groups". Thanks for loading.
This part corresponds to the *I was a lonely soul* part of the Kinks Tired of Waiting For You, both musically and lyrically. The English really paid close attention to us.
Suddenly it once again is 1962 and my girlfriend in High School complete with White Lipstick looked like a clone of Dee Dee Spurling What a Classic song!
Hard to believe it has been so many years. Dee Dee is my cousin. My dad was Paul Stevens and my sister went to see her when she was entertaining. She's the best.
Jacqueline Hardin I certainly remember this famous song (Mountain High) when I was a kid. Her voice is compelling and obviously makes the song. Still love it.👍🎸
I remember Thou shalt not steal SO WELL !!! I was 4 years old, believe it or not. As far as "Dee Dee" (Mary), I'd be willing to bet that every child had either a cousin or Aunt whom looked so much like her (great smile, btw)! I'll bet she was a great cousin !!
Great song, sweet couple and wonderful era. 1960's something I believe. I had a crush on De Dee. She is so wholesome and cute with a beautiful smile. RMC

Dee Dee, NRRArchives found it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this song as kid and I love it now... 1961 I believe #2 on the billboard charts. I seem to love songs with mountain themes to them . Over the mountain, across the sea. By the great Johnny and Joe 1956. That is my 1# mountains song this one is #2. And Ain't no mountain high enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell 1967. My #3 favorite. I'm so glad NRR found this rare footage thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I love to see the artist perform their song. Thanks Dick and Dee!
Deana: You're absolutely correct that it is a treasure to be able to see the performers while they sing. Back then if you didn't see it when it was first broadcast you didn't have much of a chance to see the artists again unless they had another great single. Ahhh, the miracles of movies and video tape. And BTW, Deana, you're as cute as a button yourself (that's a compliment, 1960's style).
Awesome: #2 US Billboard hit in 1961 and #17 in 1965 respectively. They did record with and open concerts for Mick Jagger/Keith Richards' The Strolling Bones from England to California.
Just heard this song on some old timer radio station. I like the hook! I always like the fact that it's an interracial audience. Shout out to Dick Clark
I just saw a short clip of Dick and Dee Dee singing this song on a top100 songs of 1961. I was only 10 that year and I remember it well along with almost all the other songs on that list. Had to come find this video so I could once again fall in love with it - and Dick and Dee Dee of course. Thumps up!

Yeah! the 60's I was a kid growing up during this time. It was fun watching the groups on ABC, Shindig, Hullabaloo, Hollywood Palace, Ed Sullivan. All of these shows are gone. This was the style during that time and the clothes was still conservative but decent looking. Music has evolved and look what we got today.............
They had a unique sound during the early 60's and I still enjoy listening. This UA-cam video is much easier to reference than placing my old 33 1/3 record album on the turntable / (Go Sunset Bisons Class of '62)
Great song with knock you out singing and martial drum rolls galore. Dick sang the highest and lowest parts including the falsetto, and Dee Dee sang the middle notes.

They were great together, oldies radio don't play them enought or at all!
I don’t know just how many times I’ve played this record. I will never get tired of it ❤👍
Dee Dee is simply a never ending bundle of enthusiasm to watch
Agreed, again and again
A woman with the bouffant was always a turn on and with the little bow in it just added to her attractiveness.
Dick and DeeDee had great voices and wonderful smiles. The high falsetto voice of Dick in combination with DeeDee's trilling soprano voice was unique. Lou Christie, Frankie Valli and Gene Pitney we're doing similar vocals on their recordings at the same time.
She did no high singing AT ALL.
That falsetto "trilling" was Dick over dubbed on his natural voice.
😊😊
🎶🎶♥️ Beautiful memories......♥️♥️🎶
Dee Dee was my heart throb when I was a puppy... she still has the magic to this day!!! RIP Dick..
Look at all those clean cut kids in the audience! Man, was THAT a different time! No stage rush, no mosh pits, just kids loving the music and the performers.
Those Africans in the audience must be Uncle Toms.
Loved these songs, and was fascinated by DeeDee. She always seemed like she was having a blast. Cute as a button, and seemed like a whippersnapper. Many blessings.
Dee dee was awesome until she teamed up with Hillary to sell innocent children according to the nazi tumpster
Jesus Loves You! John 3:16
She does seem happy here and on all of the album covers.
Dee Dee's beautiful eyes and smile ...... unforgettable.
May Dick rest in Peace!! GOD BLESS HIM!
What a time to be alive. An explosion of new artists and GREAT music.

Love the songs, and the suit and skinny tie. A look that never goes out of style!
Just the best group ever. Just too bad they did not record more songs for prosperity and later enjoyment. Rest in peace Dick!
They have 5 albums. What do you mean you wish they recorded more than 5 albums? Lol. We're extremely lucky they even recorded 1 or 2. Silly comment
Fun fact: when Dick and Dee Dee used to perform the circuit in California and Britain, they toured with the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones.
