I have a 2017 Kia Rio base model as my commute car (drive to train station etc) and I took it on the freeway south from Sydney down past Nowra. It was just me with a few bags in the back. Boy did it surprise me, based on all the reviews I’d read I expected it to struggle. I was overtaking people with ease at 110 and if I wasn’t careful I was doing 120 and I’m not talking about on the downhills either. I left the gear selector in manual mode and if I hit an uphill that was too much I just shifted back to third like I would in a manual anyway. Honestly there’s no reason why you can’t take the Rio on the freeway, unless maybe you have 3-5 people in the car.

The gear ratio on the 4 gear in this 4 speed automatic is most probably 1:1. For highway driving a 5 speed automatic with the 5 gear with a overdrive ratio would give lower rpm, better mileage and lower noise levels. For someone who do most of the driving in a city, a 4 speed auto is fine.

Here in Europe the Rio get a completely new 1,0 liter 3-cylinder turbo engine. So frankly it look like the australian market is just being shortchanged by still pushing some very outdated engine and transmission technology. As for the transmission though just get a manual, why would you want an automatic in a cheap car anyway, its pointless.

fundiver198 you are very right. The 1.0 litre 3 cylinder sounds like the one we just reviewed in the Suzuki Swift which we really liked for that category, but it would be interesting to see how that engine performs in something a little bigger like the Rio.

why would you need another gear for going uphill ? the extra gears, 5th and so on, are for cruising. btw where is the hottest presenter - MARTINE ?

more gears will rev match with the engines better. say if you're going uphill in 90km/h and the 2nd max out @ 85km/h, in 3rd the engine speed may drop too low and you lose speed..... if you have extra gear or 2, the engine rev will stay higher to keep the momentum
