2017 Kia Rio Review - Inside Lane

- This is the all-new 2017 Kia Rio and it aims to take on the Ford Fiesta and Skoda Fabia. The B-segment hatchback has grownup considerably with a mature premium design. Our test car was the First Edition equipped with a 118bhp 1.0 litre turbocharged engine. Kia claim 60 MPG combined.
The interior of the new Kia Rio is sculpted and mordern. First Edition cars get matte red inserts further boosting the design. A new ergonomic touchscreen infotainment display is fitted to the centre console. A spacious interior boasts a 325 litre boot.
The 2017 Kia Rio costs from £11,995 and goes on sale today.
Kias and Hyundais look more and more polished and refined with each generation. Fab review, smashing little car.

As I said, they have come so far from where they started. The past few Kia I have tested have been really good.

Just bought the threespec 1 Ltr turbo.Fab little car with nearly all the Gizmos of the special edition. I actually wasn’t keen on the red trim anyway! As most of my driving is in town didn’t want a sixth gear either. Very comfortable especially the heated seats!
Great review and this is on my shortlist when I change car later in the year. I like the fabia with the DSG gearbox, but the appeal of a long Kia warranty will certainly influence my decision. I also think this Rio looks very grown up - a really classy but subtle design. Full credit to Kia.

Beware of the DSG and DualShift. Both are trouble prone. There are 2000+ imported VW golfs sold in Taiwan, all of them are down for DSG and being expensive to repair. Even repaired, still fragile.
The crazy idea of dual clutch was from the acquiring of Bugatti by VW group. VAG did not make effort to design a good new engine matching the prestigious brand. They just bundled two VR6 2.8 liter engines into one 5.7, and rename it "W12" then stuffed it into Veyron to charge premium price. The design engineers came up with impractical idea of "two separate clutches to manage 12 cylinders by odd numbers or even numbers". They put dual clutches on 12 cylinder Veyron and tested on race track. The 0-60 time was shortened by 0.1 second. Those crazy engineers would not admit the "uselessness of 0.1 second" on street cars, instead, they claimed the DSG to be very successful and should be installed for "faster" gear change. VAG is a group so large to promote the DSG as a trend and fooled the consumers with its vulnerability.
Consumers response about DSG's weakness for being unreliable has grown gradually.
We will see the nude "automakers" when the tide fades.

@@calarthur that's a long story! I decided to buy a cheap, older Auris hybrid which was perfect for my inner city commute, but had terrible boot space, especially for a growing family. So I then leased an Octavia estate with the 1.0tsi and DSG, which I'm currently still driving. I have to say that it's a brilliant car which is far more sprightly than it has any right to be. The DSG is excellent, but even that is no match for the smoothness of the Auris. The lease deal was ridiculously cheap too and includes tyres and servicing!

I have to say I watched this review really carefully because I am a big fan of small, city cars. This car is my future car.
I own a Hyundai i10 from 2009 with a 1.1 (66hp) petrol engine and I am very satisfied. I have 261.000 kilometers on my kilometer scale without a single engine problem. I wanted to buy Kia Picanto that year but from some reason it wasn`t avaliable. I am thinking to buy a new car and the new i10 is ok but the problem with Hyundai is that they have this way of making a new models less attractive than the previous one. Of course, this is a personal preference but I like my i10 better than the new one in the terms of design.
Kia Picanto however looks amazing in this GT Line S trim. I see a lot of people here are concerned about the power of the enigne. I find it perfect for me because I am not very keen of 3-cylinder engines. I think they are not reliable such as 4 cylinder engines. I expect to drive as much kilometers with a new car as I did with my previous one and no find that 3-cylinder engine falls appart in pieces. Don`t get me wrong, I treat my car as a baby - visit to a official service every 15.000km (changing oil and etc etc) but I like to drive and the car is economical in fuel consumption.
Sometimes I could use more power and that s why this engine will be a perfect match. 3-cylinder turbo engine will not be my choice just because of the scare of reliability and price as well.
1.2 gives solid acceleration and I really dont need higher speed than 173km/h.

Nice review however my Fiesta ST-Line 1 Litre 140 bhp engine still beats this 1 Litre Turbo GDi. I love the kit on the Kias though. They are always so well equipped and I wish Ford had the same level of equipment. However I am more about the engine performance and Driving experience. Ecoboost engines are hard to beat though but how do you generally rate this against the Fiesta ST-Line if I may ask? Thanks 😜👍

Inside Lane Can't wait for you guys to review the new ST-Line 2017. Hopefully soon enough. Even though I have a 16 Plate Fiesta but still the 2017 model is better equipped more or less like the Rio. Anxiously waiting for your thoughts as I might upgrade later this year 😜. Thanks

What mpg were you getting on the review from 1.0 turbo? I heard the claimed 60mpg but would have liked review to cover actual mpg.
Very difficult to give a real world MPG figure as the environment and conditions vary massively. The manufacturers claimed figure will at least give you a baseline for comparison.

pashton76 Wet horrible day in the UK so condensation is expected. De-misters were off for audio reasons.
Inside Lane is the a/c noisy then? Great review by the way. Kia have come a long way. Can't help but think those rear lights are from a Golf though
pashton76 It's not that it is overly noisy, but we turn everything off to shoot a video. It just ensures that we get clear audio.
