    The version I heard about Hikiko-san was that she was a girl that got abused and neglected by her parents. She never had any clean clothes to wear, her hair was always matted, she was literal skin and bones and she stank. Her classmates thought it would be funny locking her in the janitor's closet, but because she was so malnourished. She died there and now goes after bullies.

      @@FoxAkimbo 5:00 OMG I'm actually writing a book on legends of female monsters from around the world and I've been researching it for year and I have a theory on why the monsters are gendered they way they are. I think there's a reason in the East the monsters are female and in the west they are male. in the East these legends of monsters were a balance of male and female until the last 100 years when more and more legends of female monsters showed up and there was a huge jump in legends that were women around the tech boom of the 1990s. if you notice in the majority of the legends the monster presents as a beautiful woman until her true form is revealed. scary stories and legends say something about the society they are from cultural fears. the stories are metaphors. don't be so blinded by a woman's beauty or trust a woman because she's beautiful because you will lose everything. she will take your life in the monster stories which is a metaphor for ruining your life by taking your money or emotional energy. the internet and tech becoming such a huge part of society caused major upset in the male dominated society. women started owning their s*xuality and gaining confidence and becoming career focused instead of aspiring to be a wife. in a society where tradition is everything that is very scary. they are afraid of women. there's even a phenomena of men who are afraid of women and instead choose to live at home with their parents instead of marrying and having children. in the west as women have gained total equality with men and have had that since around the 80s we are afraid of men. men are the ones who commit mass shootings and the ones who are serial killers. men are the ones lashing out and who pose the most danger to society and strike fear in the people. that's why the monsters are mostly male. women aren't seen as dangerous or threats to the extent that men are.

    That’s quite interesting, never would’ve thought about west being mostly male and east being female.
    I’m guessing it could play into stereotypes maybe? Like over here in the west it plays into the fear of men being strong and overwhelming you, whilst east could be playing on the fear of something that seems innocent or harmless is actually super deadly. Like little kids in horror movies

      A lot of asian ghost stories I've read usually have fem or kid ghosts. Male versions are close to none. Maybe it does have something to do with the mindset of innocent = actually deadly.
      Or maybe it's to make it more believable. A lot of ghost stories involving kids and women usually have them die of sickness, childbirth, or smthn. You can easily believe it since it does happen, and quite frequently too. So your mind might go overdrive and believe these ghost stories and stuff.

    Regarding the bathroom setting of many stories: It's because you're so vulnerable there. Keep in mind that Japan also primarily uses squat toilets, rather than ones you sit on. That means that if something approaches you in the bathroom, you're not only literally caught with your pants down, but in a position than makes it harder to try to run.

    The whole "baba" thing in Japan is weird, because Slavic folklore has one called Baba Yaga, a witch who lives in a house with giant chicken legs. The Witcher season 2 had a version of it, as well as the 2019(?) Hell Boy movie.

    • @minimalbstolerance8113
      @minimalbstolerance8113 2 роки тому +18

      I found that interesting as well. The Slavic Baba, (as with Baba Yaga) is the affectionate diminutive form of "babushka", the Russian word for grandmother (so it would literally translate to something like "granny.") I don't know the etymology behind the Japanese word baba though.

    • @Kevinblue035
      @Kevinblue035 2 роки тому +18

      @@minimalbstolerance8113 it's the same, comes from "obaa-san" meaning "grandmother" so "baba" is a childish (or rude) way to refer to a grandmother, hence why there's a lot of witches and old had type creatues with baba or baa in their name like baba the with from dragonball or the legendary youkai yamanbaa

      We have Baba Yaga in Poland, and we also use the word "baba" to describe an annoying woman (usually older, but not always). Like, when you try to get something done at a public office and the lady at the desk is rude to you and acts like you're bothering her even though it's her job - you will often hear people say later to their friends and family "what a baba!" describing this type of woman. It's interesting to me looking at the difference between stories of eastern and western ghosts. American and European ghosts can be persuaded to move on or repelled by common holy symbols, and often aren't even particularly malicious. Japanese ghosts are almost always exceptionally dangerous and aggressive, but usually have one very specific key phrase or trick that forces them to leave.

    • @tovarishcheleonora8542
      @tovarishcheleonora8542 7 місяців тому

      Yeah, Japanese urban legends looks like as if bored teenagers where making up things to scare the younger ones. Or by parents to scare the kids away from doing certain things in some cases.

    • @maledictionwolf
      @maledictionwolf 6 місяців тому +3

      While the ones on this list are aggressive, most ghosts are considered harmless or even benevolent in Japan. Partly the reason for the ones on the list seeming more aggressive is that belief in/the presence of ghosts is considered normal, and they're expected to be either neutral or benevolent, so the scary ones are more prominent in legends because it's their being different from the norm that makes them notable. Neutral spirits are average, and therefore not that interesting.
      Compare that to the west, where ghosts are considered rare, so any ghostly presence becomes notable, leading to lists of legends including more of the neutral or benevolent spirits because the presence of spirits by itself is unusual enough to be significant.

    I've done research on the Teke Teke!! (And a number of other female Yokai) There are a number of different versions of her story, including ones where she was a school girl, an office worker, a drifter, etc. But there are some other details that weren't mentioned above that I usually include in the story when I'm presenting my research on it:
    -It's believed this happened in Hokkaido, and that this specific spirit came into circulation around the 1950's, post world war two, and as Japan was modernizing.
    -While some methods of avoiding her include telling her where her legs are, there are other methods including telling her her own name, so she knows she has not been forgotten, or answering the question "do you need your legs?" With "yes, I'm using them right now"
    -in some tellings, she appears in your dreams, others she calls you on the phone. How polite!
    -sources debate on whether she is the only Teke Teke, or if she creates more of her kind from her victims.
    -"Teke Teke" is actually onomonopeia! It's the Japanese sound for her nails on hard wood floors.

    When you’re in the bathroom, you are invariably in a very vulnerable state-with your pants around your ankles, in the shower or tub alone, possibly naked. People are more likely to leave you alone even if you were to make any noise because of the “shame factor” associated with bodily functions. No one wants to think about that, much less witnesses it, except for some kinks tees out there in certain conditions. There’s also the fact that the bathroom is one of the most dangerous places in the home where you are more likely to have an accident and injure yourself without any kind of help from supernatural forces. So when you add them into the mix, it’s a perfect storm.

It also has to do with being “in and out” at the same time, since toilet drains go to a sort-of unknown place beyond your house or school.

    Japanese bathrooms have 4 stalls with the last stall being closed to public use as the number 4 in Japanese sounds to close to their word for death. That is why a lot of buildings in Japan skip the number 4 in floor numbers. Like how American buildings don’t have a 13th floor.

I remember some day finding out about the Japanese death poem called tomino's hell in a UA-cam video and me not being a strong believer I decided to read both the English translation and the Japanese one (supposedly after reading it you either lose your life or get misfortune) and later on a lot of fights and even one of my family members was sent to jail for something I'm pretty sure he had nothing with it, and till this day the tension in my family has not ended. 5:00 OMG I'm actually writing a book on legends of female monsters from around the world and I've been researching it for year and I have a theory on why the monsters are gendered they way they are. I think there's a reason in the East the monsters are female and in the west they are male. in the East these legends of monsters were a balance of male and female until the last 100 years when more and more legends of female monsters showed up and there was a huge jump in legends that were women around the tech boom of the 1990s. if you notice in the majority of the legends the monster presents as a beautiful woman until her true form is revealed. scary stories and legends say something about the society they are from cultural fears. the stories are metaphors. don't be so blinded by a woman's beauty or trust a woman because she's beautiful because you will lose everything. she will take your life in the monster stories which is a metaphor for ruining your life by taking your money or emotional energy. the internet and tech becoming such a huge part of society caused major upset in the male dominated society. women started owning their s*xuality and gaining confidence and becoming career focused instead of aspiring to be a wife. in a society where tradition is everything that is very scary. they are afraid of women. there's even a phenomena of men who are afraid of women and instead choose to live at home with their parents instead of marrying and having children. in the west as women have gained total equality with men and have had that since around the 80s we are afraid of men. men are the ones who commit mass shootings and the ones who are serial killers. men are the ones lashing out and who pose the most danger to society and strike fear.

      Interesting theory, thanks for taking the time to share

    • @Biocchi
      @Biocchi 2 роки тому +4

      That's really interesting and I wouldn't be surprised if that's a reason why that is. I also wonder if it might have something to do with the idea that women are also seen as less of a threat to men physically and less likely to overpower them. When you think about it, people's first experience of safety and respite tends to be from their mothers. As such, perhaps this makes for greater impact when it's revealed a woman is the monster in these folktales.
      I could be wrong, but just curious :v

    • @WhitneyDahlin
      @WhitneyDahlin 2 роки тому +4

      @@Biocchi I didn't even think about that! I think that definitely plays a role in it! In the west mothers are seen as protection, as nurturing, as loving, but in the east mother's play more of a disciplinary role and push their kids to study a lot, there's a phenomenon called tiger parenting that is very common among Asian mothers. Schools are very competitive and universities are very competitive in Asia and they won't let you in at all unless you have really good test scores. Unlike here in the US where the majority of universities will let you in and take your money pretty much doesn't matter what your test scores are lol. So in Asia a lot of the mothers are constantly pushing their kids to study and get the best test results from the time they are in elementary school! A lot of kids spend all day at school and then spend 4 hours at after school private tutoring, and then have almost no time for themselves when they get home. I bet youre onto something! When I was rereading my comment just now I also thought about how catfishing is very common. Where you know bad people pretend to be beautiful women online and steal men's money and even kill them rarely. So I wonder if that plays a role in why there was a big jump in female monsters around the tech boom as well.

    The gendered differences are very likely related to how either culture is socialized. Both styles of occult legends center around the dynamic of power, but power means different things within different contexts.
    Essentially, Japan is a culture with heavy emphasis on social conformity. So their fears could likely gravitate to the consequences of falling out of social order. The subjects of such often being women. So their horror stories would essentially revolve around "curse" dynamics.
    While western cultures are heavily individualistic. With an emphasis on individual responsibility. So our horror stories often revolve around a greater threat of power that takes ours away. Hence why most of pur monsters focus on "strength" and "class position".
    Now this "west" is really only greater European countries, nordic cultures have horror stories involving the ocean and the unknown, and mezo American tend toward family roles and unknown animal hunters.

    I would love it if the origin of the Sunakake Baba story was that centuries ago, a bunch of rowdy teenagers in the Nara prefecture were stumbling home and made the mistake of trampling over some old lady's flower garden. She then comes out waving her broom, throwing sand in the teenager's eyes and yelling whatever "Get off my land!" translates to in Japanese. The next morning, the teens are too embarrassed to admit that they got chased away by an angry granny, so they agree that if anyone asks what happened, they say it was a yokai.
    Also, I nearly died laughing at the Tonkaraton entry, partly because I agree with you: a mummy riding a bike waving a samurai sword around is pretty hilarious, and partly because the mispronounced name "Tonkatron" sounds like the most pathetic Decepticon Transformer ever.

    The bathroom is a place of vulnerability in a lot of stories. It's the same reason that even in American horror films, there will be jumpscares in bathrooms, the same reason bullying scenes happen there. When something goes wrong in the bathroom, you remember that. And I believe the reason the bathrooms are always in schools or public places is because of the fact that not only are you vulnerable in those stalls, but you don't know anyone around you. You are in a small box, with your most vulnerable areas revealed, and you don't know anyone in the other boxes around you.
    It's the same reason some people get surprised when someone knocks on the bathroom door, you never expect it and you never think about what's outside till it is to late.

    Just a fun little tidbit for if you are still wondering about the bathroom issues. Japanese culture (according to what I have learned through Koji Susuki books) is that spirits specifically Yurei or angry spirits need 3 things to stay in this world. 1) A tragic and sudden death, 2) a powerful emotion (fear, anger, sorrow) and 3) water.
    lots of water in the bathroom!

    Oooh interesting video! I love myths from Japan, Yokai are so so intriguing and it's cool to see what's similar and what's different to Western myths/cryptids!
    I know you mentioned local 58 in the NNN broadcast entry, and that is a super cool ARG, but I don't think it's too similar to the NNN broadcast :0
    I remember learning about the Teke-Teke and red paper, blue paper myths years ago and they used to freak me out soooo much :')
    As usual, love the vid! The right amount of info, humour, and facts!

    As I am from Japan originally, most of our urban legends are women because women are seen as innocent and unable to hurt people. Creatures then disguise as women so that they are more easily trusted and can lure people better.
    Also, the pronunciation was done well! Better than most!

    Idk why but I feel like the reason that a majority of urban legends, or Japanese urban legends specifically, happen in the schools' bathrooms is maybe because there's much more negative energy there than other places. I mean for instance, from what I've heard, students in Japanese schools have a high rate of being bullied, and most of those people who are bullied, their safe corner is the bathroom. So the negative energy from all the hatred, rage, or any other negative feelings in particular gets higher there.
    Ps: just my opinion, I could be wrong. This is just what I think.

    Btw for the school mysteries thing,, what you described is an anime (Toilet-bound Hanako Kun) and the seven mysteries for that anime specifically. From what I can tell some schools in Japan have their own seven mysteries that are each different depending on the school. basically what I'm saying is the anime has basis in reality but not every school follows that exact formula. I may be slightly wrong tho considering I'm not Japanese

    One of the reasons I believe why there's so many urban legends involving spirits in restrooms is because a LOT of horrible crimes that have happened in Japan are in restrooms which is why most of the spirits that haunt them will kill you no matter what. In fact, last month I found a video analyzing a crime in Japan where a man was buried under a public toilet... I would rather not go into details but you get the point.
