  • How do we know that Hills Like White Elephants, the classic 1927 short story by Ernest Hemingway, was about a couple debating whether they should get an abortion or not? In this video I explain why that must be the case, and help explain some of the subtle details Hemingway wrote to let us know.

Your video analysis was so insightful. The hat I most tend to wear would be a baseball cap, I wear it mostly when I do yard work or if I will be out in the sun for long periods of time. Look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Very well done review. Your analysis regarding the table legs was insightful and I’d never thought of it in that way before.
Heh, I wear baker boy hats, mostly.

Great summary and analysis! I don't wear hats much. I will wear a baseball cap to certain outdoor activities if the sun may be an issue, but that's about it.

Hemingway is the greatest symbolist of américain literature. White éléphants stands as dumb witness to the suffering the girl is supposed to undergo. Love, suffering favorite Hemingway thèmes...

I read this story in high school and watched a few videos of analysis on this. If this story is about abortion, why is no one talking about the girl drinking alcohol while pregnant? Could that be why the Waitress asked, “with water?”

this story was written in 1927. The consequences of alcohol during pregnancy were not yet known.

Well, Ms. Bookritique, I wear a fedora most of the time, but during the summer I like to wear either a panama hat or a boater. I'm thinking of getting a derby or a bowler to mix things up, but one day I think I might just fly my freak flag enough to start wearing a top hat, so I look like some dime store action figure knock off of The Penguin.
    Hey, you asked...
Great video, looking forward to the next one!

How do we know they aren't talking about a lobotomy? Especially with the nuances of being "happier" or "simpler". Idk, that's just where my brain went, especially with the time period

that was my take! something about when he said "they just let a little air in" - i was thinking how they used to just stick some clippers up the nasal cavity and clip the cortex bridge. alright - glad to see your comment. i'm feeling a less silly now!

I love hats and have a collection. I usually wear a flat cap for casual dress. When I’m dressed more formally, I wear a fedora.
