    That was the most frustrating thing I've ever listened to... I get how deep the meaning was, but how many times did he say how simple it was. 😭

      the girl felt numb at last,in contrast with earlier being irritated by the man's words. so sad. I can feel it almost the end of their relationship.

    "Four reales" is actually said by the woman/waitress. "Reales" are a type of Spanish coin, and she's telling the man and the girl the cost of those two beers.

    "The man called 'Listen' through the curtain. The woman came out from the bar.
    'Four reales.'
    'We want two Anis del Toro.'" (p. 212, The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway). Why does the waitress say "Four reales"? Spain replaced the reales with the peseta in 1868. Does she really mean, 'for real?' And if so, what is for real?

    Can't really understand whats so special. I don't get why Hemingway doesn't explain what's going on. Even knowing what's going on through context clues this isn't an interesting story. The voice actors don't do a good job at what the real emotion of this situation. meh. I'll try some other Hemingway but to me very boring and obvious promotion of degeneracy.

    • @macfly6237
      @macfly6237 9 місяців тому +1

      The story is about abortion. The title and the call back to white elephants is about The White Elephant in the room. “A White Elephant in the room” just means an obvious truth that’s so embarrassing and undesirable it can’t be addressed. Thought the story the man is coercing the “the girl” to get an abortion after getting her pregnant. He even makes allusions she’s not the first woman she’s gotten pregnant. Throughout the story he calls her girl instead of woman because he doesn’t truly love or care about her. The short story of you wanna get deep is about how the “girl” has no power or say with her pregnancy. Even when she asks him to shut up or go away, he doesn’t and she relents because of her situation. He has all the money, he speaks Spanish, and has their luggage and possibly their passports.
      This is actually one of my favorite Hemingway stories because it talks about abortion and kinda puts you in the shoes of the girl. The conversation is very passive aggressive and harsh coming from the man.
