  • Stefano Zambon (CTO at Elk) - “Don’t fear the hardware: turn software plugins into hardware instruments with Elk”
Elk Audio OS is a Linux-based operating system for embedded devices that combines excellent real-time performance (down to 1ms roundtrip latency) with ease of software development.
With Elk, you can turn one or more software plugins into Hardware processing units and manage sensors, displays, and everything else starting with a few lines of code. Directly supported plugins format are VST 2, VST 3 and LV2, plus it is straightforward to generate plugins using frameworks like JUCE or high-level languages such as CSound or FAUST.
This short talk will present a general overview of Elk and practical examples showing how fast you can make a hardware prototype using Elk. The hardware used will be a Raspberry Pi 3&4, using the Elk Pi audio shield and the HiFiBerry hat.

Whay happened to rack extension compatibility? A few years ago yhere was a page on reason studios aka propellerhead mentioning a collab to make re´s into hardware, but no news on the reason site, and on the elk site between the logos from the technology they use like vst2, vst3, ableton link, bluetooth etc the re logo is disappeared. Do they not work together anymore? Also what´s the chance of the elk audio os becoming THE music os for desktops? I would love another option than flakey windows os that fks up stuff every update, or expensive mac hardware. I would love to build a monster pc with a super light weight audio os, maybe just a browser for updates, and an audio player but that´s it, no printerdrivers, no updates every month but let´s say stable ones every 6 months. I have the experience that if you install the super lightweight w10 os with the program that disables most services is the closest thing we have now and it feels like your computer is double as powerfull.. that guys would be awesome, i know that´s not your main target, but would be so cool. Also virusses and malware would become a thing of the past because who will write one for an os that would probably be for 0,00001% of the population. It really would be a dream come true, and would make our computers a lot longer usable..

Hi, so i have already complete quite a few of your videos however i do have a question regarding this one in particular. So it is in the ELK documentation that you need elk-juce port in order to build for this microcontroller. With JUCE 6 it is stated that it supports headless audio plugins but it is missing some default binaries that are not loaded by default to fully support running on ELK.
In order for me to develop something that is supposed to run both on desktop DAW and ELK i would need to use elk-audio Projucer and framework? or can i use JUCE 6 and then recompile developed code through their port?
Sorry if this is noob question.
Great content and keep it up. Planning on supporting you on Patreon soon (sorry for not being there yet)
    Best regards, Gonçalo Correia
