  • Many fear that eating a plant-based diet without dairy will lead to weaker bones and an increased risk of fractures. But evidence shows those concerns to be largely unfounded.

    An analysis of thousands of people around the world showed that eliminating milk, cheese, and dairy from the diet is actually more protective for bone health in many instances.

    Dr. Neal Barnard reviews the findings of the analysis with "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room LIVE. He has what you need to know about maintaining strong bones and getting enough calcium in a dairy-free diet.

    Other Topics Discussed
    - Is cottage cheese better for bones than regular milk?
    - Does eating salt weaken bones?
    - Calcium carbonate in almond milk
    - Vegan alternatives to kefir
    - Is Greek yogurt healthy?
    - Can calcium supplements cause gallstones?
    - Is plant-based butter healthier than regular butter?
    - Plant-based probiotics
    - Is raw dairy a healthier option?
    - Plus more!
    Have a question? Post it in the comments or chat and we’ll answer as many as possible during the live broadcast.
    This episode of The Exam Room™ Podcast is sponsored by The Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund, which supports organizations like the Physicians Committee that carry on Greg’s passion and love for animals through rescue efforts, veganism, and wildlife conservation.

    I am 62 yrs old. Have been vegetarian since age 8 and vegan off and on throughout the years and now am vegan for 10 yrs. Never liked milk so I never drank it. Ate cheese sparingly. I have never had a broken bone or fracture even with a very busy life. Use to dirt bike, trail ride, race walk, hike, climb, lift weights, etc. Only recently did I fracture 3 ribs but they healed in 2 months. Being vegetarian/ vegan has made me stronger. Dont buy into the fear that the dairy industry and their lobbyist spread.

    I've been wfpb for 5 years, and have a diagnosis pf osteoporosis and osteopenia. Drinking 1- 8 oz glass of soy milk a day, for the calcium, along with eating greens everyday. I take no calcium supplements, but do take Vitamin D3 and B12. I walk, backpack, hike, and do weights, plus gardening. I am 66 years old, and have had no bone fractures. I try to give my bones "a reason to live," as Dr. Bernard says. Anything else I can do? And by the way, I love this show, and the sage wisdom all participants give here.

    • @CathrinCatherine

      Try eating wet starches instead of dry starches: for example Have more potatoes than bread, have more corn than oats. It’s all high-carb, all McDougall-approved, and satiating (and healthy!) but wet starches are lower in calorie density.
      Leave out all oils - try it for 3 weeks and you’ll effortlessly loose stubborn weight.
      You hold on to water on a high carb diet, so not all “too much weight” is necessarily fat but also stored water.
      Just because something’s low in calories, doesn’t mean you can eat all you want (quote by Tim Kaufman who lost like 200lbs on a vegan diet.) never binge-eat on anything no matter the calorie density.
      Those tips helped me a lot, maybe they’re helpful to you, too!

      Youre not supposed to eat too many fats on a vegan diet because the vegan diet is devoid of DHA. Some can convert ala and epa into dha on a vegan diet IF omega 6 fats are minimized and one eats flax seeds and some other foods. Scientifically what the vegans don't like to mention is that studies show many cannot even make this conversion.

      @@k.h.6991 Yes. Not only did he confuse the terms, he implied that fermented foods were unnecessary. I think Dr Bernard is a wonderful man and an esteemed doctor but I feel some of his advice is spotty in a number of areas.

    I listen to this whole thing but still can't remember if calcium supplements were ever addressed. Anyone know?

      Synthetic supplements can never duplicate the real thing - calcium from dark leafy greens!!!

    How do you explain the high rates of osteoporosis in the Japanese and Chinese who don’t use dairy?
    The answer about cheese and yogurt was a dodge.
    Original Kefir came from Chechnya and the best cultures still come from there.

    Has he read the book estrogen matters? Also, some ppl have hysterectomys in their 20s or 30s...you think no estrogen then, that is not what the science says. It helps with bones, heart, sex, and all aspects of aging.

      Yes I’ve reviewed a lot of the studies myself as I don’t rely on other’s filters and the bal of evidence esp for women 50+ max 5-7 yrs is good. Safer and more effective in low dose patch. As estrogen can incr cortisol levels which may effect blood sugar and inflammation levels maybe ask your MD about checking these markers. Also be careful w/vit E as Estrogen incr prostaglandin synthesis and vit E decr it. Estrogen can effect platelet activity - some sources say incr and some say it reduces. An MD/endocrinologist is the best source for this info.

    How are Japanese with fractures, considering they consume lots of sodium

  • @jamest681
    @jamest681 9 місяців тому +1

    Why would milk not be protective of fractures. We can all agree that calcium is important and milk is a good source of calcium, just like leafy greens are.

    • @broddr
      @broddr 9 місяців тому +2

      There’s no conclusive reason yet, but one hypothesis is the proteins in milk and dairy products. Proteins are broken down to their component amino acids in our digestive system. When we absorb that acidic nutrient our bodies neutralize it by releasing calcium from our bones. Leafy greens are alkaline and have much less protein per serving, so their calcium is absorbed without any need to release calcium from our bones.

    I'm a senior, having gone wpb for 2.5 yrs, I'm beginning to feel the mild effects of iron deficiency. It's pale under my bottom eyelids. Also some brain fog. I'm beginning to think I may have to either include some red meat in my diet or take a natural heme iron supplement at least for until those 2 symptoms are gone. Thoughts?

    • @sectionalsofa
      @sectionalsofa 8 місяців тому +2

      If I were you I'd get bloodwork first. If you are deficient in iron, supplementation is probably warranted. But you don't want to take iron indiscriminately because if your levels become too high that can cause other problems. By the way, legumes are good sources of iron (with vitamin c foods for absorption.) I'm 70 and was moving more and more towards being completely wfpb, but have recently added small amounts of yogurt/kefir, egg-whites and salmon as I feel that small amounts of added animal sourced protein is beneficial at my age. It is possible to consume too little protein, especially as a child or a senior, despite what some plant based docs say.

      You have to eat your greens and beans for the iron. Dr. Greger hàs a daily dozen food checklist app. Try to follow that to get all your nutrients. See if it makes you feel better. Blood work will tell you if you any nutrient deficiencies.
