- OFF THE BEATEN TRACK (literally) in SPAIN - chasing the winter sun - Van Life Europe.
Well we've made it to Spain, and our long term followers will know, that whenever we come to Spain, there's trouble. This week we rely on the kindness of locals for a spontaneous rescue mission after driving down a road we shouldn't.
We also manage to park ourselves right in the centre of a parade and have to make a bit of a mad dash back to our campervan. Lets hope that sees the end of our van life problems on this trip to southern Europe, and fingers crossed our van life disasters won't be anywhere near the scale of our last visit 3 years ago, which saw us experience the ultimate van life nightmare!
One thing's for sure, van life is Spain is never dull! We do enjoy driving a campervan (or motorhome) across Europe, although I've got to admit, we are hoping for a quieter van life when we get to Portugal, provided we make it...
Who thinks this is just Lous way of convincing me to let her get an off road 4x4 camper van?!!

I am working my way backwards through your videos and just got to this one. I love how real you 2 keep it in regards to your relationship and your life. I’m a Director of Nursing somewhere in the US of A… and sometimes I get so fed up and in a rut in regards to the daily grind and routine of every day normal stuff! You two have been blessing Showing me how the same old shit happens to all of us and we should never feel sorry for ourselves and like we’re the only ones that shit happens to! Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall in the bar where the Spanish gentleman is telling the tale of how he rescued two English ladies + pets from the mud not once but twice! and had a multi language sing song whilst doing it 🙂 Fingers crossed that that was your low point of this trip. FWD vans are pants in the mud. The weight distribution is all wrong. stick a couple of carpet offcuts in the van to stick under the wheels if you get stuck. Attach 5yds of string to each, tie the to the back bumper so when to get going you don't have to stop until you're on terra firma. Keep going, loving the adventures.

What a diamond that Spanish gentleman was helping you out on that Long and Winding Road (Beatles 1970), such a Sacrifice (Elton 1989) using his car to get you unstuck from all that mud. I wonder if It's Not Unusual (Tom Jones 1969) for that track to be so muddy...ok I'll stop now!! Seriously though I'm glad it didn't put a dampener on your day and I loved the little festival you went to as it's always good learning about new things, traditions from other countries. Thanks Emily, Louise and not forgetting AJ and Miss Summer too for lifting my spirits.

Leave it to Emily to find a parade with free snacks! 😂
A plastic bread tray girls, one of the red ones. Cut the bottom out then cut in half. Keep then in the van to put under the wheels when yo get stuck.. 100% works in snow and wet ground too. Tie a piece of washing line to them and the towbar and you don’t have to stop to get them. Stop down the road and get them as you’ve dragged them behind you.
It’s really nice watching your videos, I’ve been watching others and I’ve decided that they’re definitely professional scroungers. Thanking people individually for their donations, this causes others to want a mention obviously. There’s one out there who has a free electric scooter, 2 electric bikes, 4 power banks and more… then a list of thanks for the cash donations and a happy birthday list.. hence.. people are stopping watching them ( it was takes about at the Manchester show) and how his MH must be over weight, hence the reason it’s always catching on kerbs and speed bumps.

The trick to not getting stuck is to keep your speed up. The faster you go through mud, the less likely you are to get stuck. Doesn't matter if the van is bouncing all over the place over the holes; just power through it

Use the rubber mats under your feet ! Put them under the tires , that works every time!

For a moment I felt badly about your cow-pie-road dilemma, but you both had me laughing so hard all I could do was enjoy! Your guardian angel reminded me so much of winter snow dig-outs that the sense of relief was overwhelming when you finally made it through - what a sterling human being he was. If you get a Nissan Turano for Ireland, I know I would only be able to think of her as "Delilah" ... how sweet and touching this episode was!!!

In my experience spanish people are very lovely and happy to help out a stranger (in trouble). this video reconfirms that. I hope you have learned a valuable lesson about muddy roads and 2 wheel vans! Good luck with your trip.

My experience is, if you’re wedged deep in mud, wheels spinning and treads full of the slippery stuff, it’s tow time. No amount of mats or carpets will do. Always know where your tow eye and hefty tow strap/rope are and seek out a knight in shining 4WD 😊
Fear not, you are not alone getting stuck in Spain while travelling in a camper!
I too got extremely stuck trying to perform a 3 point turn up a tiny mountain road! I ended up not being able to reverse and with my front bumper pressed up against the barrier with a drop off on the other side!
I ended up being pulled out by a tractor thanks to some amazing locals!
Granted, it did help that I speak Spanish due to growing up in Lanzarote 😝

It’s great that you manage to stay so good humoured during adversity. My other half would have lost the plot! It’s one of the things that makes me wonder if van life is for us… but I am yearning for it!!

We were driving alone an Arizona desert when the battery fell out of the MGB (which FYI is basically under the back seat and had rested out the floor of the car). That was a thank goodness for kindness of strangers' moment.

In rural Spain it is rare for people to accept money as thanks, most will take it as an insult (don't worry you're in the clear bc you're foreigners). I suggest, if possible, you have always some kind of cookies (shorbread would be good) or sealed food that can be given as thank you, that they usually accept and appreciate.

Lou a little tip drop the drive wheels tyre pressure by about 15% this causes the tread area to expand use second gear not first to start off AND IF YOU CANNOT GET OUT DON'T KEEP TRYING AS YOU WILL BURN OUT YOUR CLUTCH AND DAMAGE THE DRIVE SHAFTS as well as digging yourself further in.
I carry a set of heavy duty traction mats rated to about three and a half ton £68 Jolitac from Amazon they roll up when not in use don't go for the cheap £5 jobs from a well known high street automotive supplier about as much use as a chocolate teapot in a microwave it looked like your saviour was running his little Nissan Tereos (no longer available) on standard road tyres.
If you do decide to go down a dirt track again stop and walk down first (not after driving halfway) if you sink van most certainly will also you can check for any hazards
This year is gonna be a blast! Even Fanny got muddy. Minute 13:47, watched it like 5 times, Emily coming out so eloquent. Another mesmerizing episode of so many on the horizon. ¡¡ Pura Vida!!
