- It's the holiday season and it's time to automate our home's lighting to be useful, decorative, and fun. This time, we'll be using Govee's new Christmas String Lights to decorate for Halloween, Christmas, and other holidays!
These are some very flexible smart lights for Christmas and Halloween, and they have many use cases because of how they're built. I'll show you how they can be integrated in some DIY Christmas Decorations, some DIY Halloween Decorations, and how you can use them to brighten up the trick or treater's night! So these aren't just Christmas lights, they're the #GoveeHolidayLights we've all been after.

Fun stuff, Brian! Thanks for the video! I might have to look at them a bit closer.
Thank you Hugh! Enjoy your weekend!
This is the coolest channel I've found in years. I love automations, and I'm so happy I found your channel. I use google routines and Hue automations, and I'm always looking for new ideas. Great content!
We've been trying this new sort of format! So glad you like it!
We used to wrap lights around our stair bannister but rhe new cat decised to chew them. I might give the govee ones a go as they seem a bit thicker and more robust than the cheap wire ones we had before
These are definitely more robust than those basic ones you get off of Amazon, butI could see a cat getting excited about these ones too
Good stuff Brian. Thank you sir.
Thank you sir!
Glad to see your DYI skills are on par with my own. Lol
Lol I’m not the craftiest
Just in time, thank you
Thank you!
"YOU...LIGHT UP MY LIFE" !
LOL!
Brian how do I turn off the 4K developer options on my fire stick I saw in your other fire stick hack video?
Developer options has changed, I actually don't know where it is at the moment
Thanks!
Thank you Big Bear!
Hey buddy. So I have two Smartthings hubs v3. They have weird unfound stuff in them and other oddities So today I was going to wipe them both and start over... They have been in use for 3 maybe 4 years? I figure clean slate? What do you think and could you suggest an easier approach? I was just going to go and forget everything then factory reset and start again... Ideas? Thank you!
Hello! The one thing that's easier to do now vs later is to unbind or remove Z-Wave devices. Do that before you wipe the slate clean. Everything else is just fine to blow away like that in my experience. :)
Thank you for your quick response!!!!

Can these lights be connected to each other for long runs of 200 feet or more?
Nope, they're one and done
Hmmm I don’t know I have seen people connect multiple sets of these. But I haven’t personally done it so I don’t want to give you false hope. But from watching another person’s video of installing on his entire house and incorporating the curtain lights for the garage door it seemed like they were able to connect together in some way.
Maybe just look up some videos
@@EchanteDante can you possibly send me the video you speak of? I haven't been able to find many video on these specific lights..but I did see one where the last light in the strand just ended as a light with no connection wires. But I wonder if you can splice them in together.
I loved the way Brian said the gift light he made only cost $16, but factor in the cost of the lights and it’s 🤯 so exspensive. I like the effect of the lights, but Xmas decorations in October should be made illegal. Great video, awesome ideas but I couldn’t justify spending that amount of money on basically Xmas lights. You start putting up led lights like this and the energy usage starts to creep up. Here in the UK it is still very expensive for electricity.
I can go one better than Brian and Xmas, happy Easter! 😂🤣😂🤣
Happy Easter!🤣🤣
I location option available
Sorry don't know what you're asking
Can you turn off sections of lights?
example: If I have 33 ft set and 11 feet is on on bush, want up to 11 feet up to off, and the next bush is the 3rd 11 feet during Halloween. Why not 2 11 feet? Reuse! 33 feet during the holidays. The clicking triggering sections around 12:15 seems like this wouldn't be an issue.
How is the power consumption compared to "non-smart" LED lights? (maybe with each color lit individually, then a mix (one color each, not a mix on each chip) to approximate regular LED lights?- if you want to be extra thorough)
How is the home assistant integration (is it over wifi? my 'Govee Warm White Outdoor String Lights, 48', H7012 (48ft) & the related 96' (H7013)' only pair with the HA integration that I found over bluetooth, which my Synology lacks, so they are Google Home & Echo/Alexa only, not HomeKit/iPhone/MacOS)? How about matter/HomeKit?
Do they offer local control? (Wink hub burned me on that before I even setup my smart home... Plus cloud based integration means that companies can go out of business or killing a product & server... not that I see Govee becoming insolvent anytime soon. )
Sorry for so many questions- feel free to answer only one (I'd rather that than no answer). Anyone is welcome to answer.
P.S. If anyone knows, how to attach my Synology DS1821+ Home Assistant to my Govee H7012, please share. While I'd be in Bluetooth range of the lights that I'm considering, the NAS is outside of range for the festoon lights. I'm not sure if there is a work around for this. I had a RPi 3, but my wife lost it when we moved and they're too overpriced to consider just to get Govee working with Home Assistant. I have old androids and I plan to add android tablets as control units,, but I don't think they'd be any use. I also have ESP8266 NodeMCU (I believe they have bluetooth) and ESP8266 Wemos D1 Mini (I don't think these have bluetooth)
Ideally, I'd use the Govee WiFi
Hey Stephen, yeah lots of Q's!
Lemme start with the easy ones. The others I may have to leave for someone else.
1. You can turn off sections of the light through the Color Feature (static, multi color displays) and the DIY (self-created effects), but not for the main effects. Ie. Christmas.
2. I didn't measure the power consumption for these to compare, but I've measured Govee's LEDs before. They are not the most power efficient company out there today, but they are far from the worst. Smart Features consume more energy obviously, but only when being used. Otherwise, think of it like an extra 0.5 Watts to maintain connectivity.
3. Local control is somewhat available, but not as you might expect. Bluetooth connectivity is available and there is an API for other potentially local controls. Govee is not a completely local platform by any means and I'm sure I'll get called out 100x for any nuance I miss but some things can be done locally, others cannot.
@@AutomateYourLife you tempted me into getting a 10 meter/33' string for my daughter to try out for Halloween decorating (Halloween is her favorite holiday).
I think I'll wait for the 66' if Govee ever decides to embrace Matter and local control, or at least Home Assistant, (maybe it'll be an early Christmas present for me, lol)
Tell me how it went!
Did anyone else have a dead Pixel? One light was displaying a different color...
Send it back!
@@AutomateYourLife yes sir!
Wait.... what Amazon subscription?! Are you just talking about how they want to charge for when Alexa becomes a lot more capable with AI in the future? For whatever reason, I got the idea you meant this is something that's coming between now and Christmas!
Yeah. When Alexa becomes really smart with AI, Amazon says they will charge a subscription.
The problem is what they consider smart AI probably won't be what we consider Smart AI.
Yeah so they’re putting a lot of Guard Features behind a paywall soon. That could have left us without the ability to run routines based on geolocation
So, when Alexa is actually reliable? I hope they don't all go this way. I got used to Google Home, Echo, or Siri (Started with Google Home, Echo was free, got a bunch more of both near free, then needed a HomePod Mini... actually my favorite, but $100, even $90 at Sam's) turning off the lights 85% of the time. I guess I better work on those automations and look into the voice assistant on Home Assistant... just to be safe@@HansAramburo I just can't pay a subscription fee to turn on my closet light.
@@AutomateYourLife Ohh, okay.
Dang. Out of stock on Amazon.
Oh really?? Bahhh!
Xmas treein october ? Really ?
lol yaaaaa...what you don't have yours up Philippe?!
Brian you know we're going to have to report you to Martha Stewart.
make it orange or orange & purple?
Some of us like Halloween. We don't put up Christmas trees until 11/1@@AutomateYourLife
Lol I only did it for the video folks! My kid made me tear it down so we could put it back up together later in the year!
