Nobody knows perfectly what Gabrielle did during the war but she was not a nazi even if she had deals with them, it was more like a vendetta against the Wertheirmer family.

I love the designs of early Chanel I like how she was self made I love how carl lager felt changed and shaped the brand and to this day its one of my favourite fashion houses. but she did some pretty shitty things, I don't think the current brand should suffer for her mistake they should do more to acknowledge this fact.

Coco Chanel was a blessing to women because her styles were comfortable and available to any income. They used much less fabric and were often of knits...she put her fabulous jewelry, such as the black pearls given by the Duke, safely away and loved costume jewelry for everyday. I could write an essay on the effect she had just on my own grandmothers, who were born in 1885 and 1890. One was born poor in Tennessee, her life going through Oklahoma and Texas small towns. She was an excellent seamstress and looks lovely in the Chanel look skirts she made herself.
As for the Nazi issue...first off, there was a post war witch hunt that overdid hugely...often to import Nazis into the US to serve our government. Looking at the evidence available on youtube, she certainly didn't betray Jews to the Gestapo or anything truly horrible. If her Wehrmacht officer was asked by intelligence to get Coco to approach her old friend Winston Churchill on behalf of an armistice or peace agreement, that would indicate how much German command wanted to go behind the politicians (Hitler) and form a peace....a peace that would have saved millions of lives, freed the camps, prevented the "Final Solution", and saved Dresden perhaps even Tokyo from fire bombing. But, as we all know NOW, the construction contracts had already been signed and the bankers had already determined the war would be prolonged for their interests. There were others who wanted D-Day in 1943 and were argued down by the money interests and military industrialists.
My point is...don't believe the cover stories about anything. And enjoy Chanel #5...

The French felt guilty for not standing up to the Germans....as Simone Signoret joked, "After the war EVERYBODY was in the Resistance." (She actually rode a bike and delivered a note or something.) The witch hunts after the war were like the McCarthy witch hunts in the US....they went after and smeared the wrong people while the real villains were free and rewarded with good jobs and pensions, often in the USA. I have this from a Frenchman who went around changing street signs in the Resistance as a teenager.

This video does not change my opinion about this iconic woman who defied men to bring femininity to all women and prove we are more than a slave to men. I admire and deeply respect this brave woman who rose to an influential state by having guts and determination to allow women to think for ourselves. RIP Miss Chanel.

Chanel was a tough woman, and considering what I have seen of her biographies innately selfish, with little sentiment for others, so I am not surprised about the Nazi connections, but impetus for that association may have been due to a nephew or family member held by the Germans during the war; which may shed some light as to additional motivation if true. In any case, she knew poverty, rejection, humiliation, discipline, and was a loner given her life experiences. Above all she was a talented, bold survivor that has become an unforgettable icon.

Sure, if you had been yanked away from family at age 12, you might have been slightly hardened by that abrupt, horrific experience . Gabrielle was established in Paris. Do you think she wanted ANOTHER abrupt yanking out of her life placement?? She deferred to the H monster. She did not want to be bothered by him. Anyone claiming all this "informant" hype, probably does not know what it's like to set your art studio up and try and establish yourself, only to realize that bombs and war are about to demolish your creations. She had enough of destruction of her delicate feelings. She was a strong Lion and did what she had to do to keep Art alive. A LEO is a creator.

Chanel was a Nazi collaborator, but SO was most of Europe during World War II. She launched her new collection in America and the first collection actually failed, skewered by the French press and receiving a bland response from the American market. So when she did a second collection it debuted specifically in Dallas Texas. It was a Glorious Reprise of her box suit from the 30's, this time in tweed perfect for the New 50's market.,delighted with the success and the attention that Dallas gave for her return, a special collection is done exclusively for the Dallas market. Special note: Although she may have been a collaborator with the Nazi's, her original company was financed by Jews, and her new found success in Dallas was largely a Jewish market, mostly from women who remember Chanel hanging in their grandmothers closet in Pre-War Europe and how beautiful the clothes were. Chanel no5 was the fifth recipe that had the scent she liked the best ( it also happened to be here favorite number ) there are over 28 other recipes #19, #23, and #28 making it to market, but CHANEL No5 has been her Best Seller. There are many more facts that I have learned over the years having wokred with people that worked with her when she was alive. She is truly a SELF made woman multi faceted and complicated.

I was very young could not afford one.. But they were around in the stores and ladies wore them.my mother did.. Thanks for the video she said inspired me from a very young age.. I lived her clothes her life story.. She was a talented lady don't really have a comment about Nazi friends I didn't know about them too young.. Wasn't born yet.

regardless of Nazi association Chanel practically started the trend for the Little Black Dress, Her perfume is the most iconic and renowned fashion accessory of all time and throughout the decades since the 1960s the Chanel jacket has inspired past and future designers in creating the simple classy wardrobe for women. Her bitterness was probably caused by the death of her lover Capel otherwise she would just be like every other businesswoman when it comes to emotions and being in love. She has also inspired women everywhere in what she has done in the way of business, she is one of the first major business owners during a world largely dominated by men.

Gabrielle was given away. At an age where she felt HUGE pain about it. Her father did it. Her home was abruptly turned into an orphanage. She was transplanted to one. Where her overseers wore Black. Unless you read about Hitler and artists, you will not know what threats he gave to them. Coco was established in Paris, trying to build her design business. She did not want to be uprooted one more time. So she was pleasant to Hitler in order that he leave her be and not uproot her. Study what other artists had to do to be left alone by that monster...

    G. Coco Chanel was determined to continue her fashion edification at any cost , one way or another. She probably thought of the Nazis as enemies to her dreams and since she couldn't subside them she cleverly decided to join them to finish what she had started.

That Extrait perfume cost ($4,600.00) is for THIRTY ounces, NOT ONE OUNCE. It's a huuuuge bottle.....nearly 3 soda cans of perfume for that price! Seven and a half oz cost only $2,050. And that's still a huge bottle. Most large perfume bottles are a standard 3.4 oz. So 7.5 oz is more than twice that much. I don't know any woman who buys perfume in those large sizes. Her 30oz size must be intended for display only.

I really don't know what her connection with the Nazis was. (The people shaking hands with Hitler are the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, not her) Her detractors say she was a spy and collaborator, others say she wasn't. Its hard to say because it was before my time. I ask myself, what about Wernher Von Braun? What is the difference between Coco and he? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wernher_von_Braun The question is, was she involved in Nazi war crimes? I don't think so. Do I like her? I didn't know her. Do I like her talent, her work and the fact that women don't have to wear corsets any more? Yes, I do. The other questions? I guess that is between her and God and I will not judge.
