Peter, your customer was EXTREMELY LUCKY that he hired you to diagnose the REAL ISSUE with his truck! I think you have a lifetime customer now, for sure!!
I JUST went through this. There was a terrible shudder under the seat during acceleration at low speeds. Spoiler alert: It turns out it was my tourqe converter. (2011 4Runner 180,000 miles) Let me tell you, before I threw in the towel and went to a dealership to get a second opinion, I tried everything. New tires, alignment, ballance, any suspension that was worn, all four ujoints were replaced and greased, drive shaft was greased, new fluids throughout. Everything! I took it to Toyota to confirm my suspicions. They quoted $3,000 for the torque converter installed. $6,700 for a new transmission installed. I did a simple drain and fill on the sealed transmission. Added Shudder Gard to my transmission fluid. POOF! The shudder (rumble strips sensation) is GONE. I do not usually believe in magic potions, but this one is a lifesaver! A few quarts of VERY expensive transmission fluid and a $10 tube of shudder gard is all it took to save me thousands. Just thought I would leave this comment in case someone needed some ideas for thier situation. 👍
Hold up, very expensive trans fluid?? Toyota WS ATF is like 8$/1L bottle at the Toyota dealer. My 4th gen 4runner needs 14 liters for a full replacement; It was like 140$ canadian after taxes.
The shuttering is exactly what I had in my 2007 4Runner and thought it was my transmission as well...thank you for the video...I will have them focus on U-Joints to see if there is an issue there.
Hi Peter I'm not a mechanic but I know enough to do most repairs on my 2002 taco when you were under the truck describing the symptoms the first thought were the universal joints I was right I've learned a lot from your channel thank you for taking so much of your time to make these videos have a great day my friend
I have this exact issue. I replaced the u joint by the transmission, but not the one at the rear end. I’ll get that done this weekend and see how that works. Toyota dealership said I needed a new torque converter. $3500.
If you were closer to Texas I would love to bring my car to you to have it looked over. A 07 Corolla just 700 miles shy of 300,000 miles. Keep up the good video content😊
If you have a boat, that u-joint gets dunked launching and recovering your boat on the boat ramps. If a u-joint boot gets dicey the water gets in. The differential vent is up higher but look and see how high and don't dunk the axle more than half way. The axle is quite warm after driving, gets quickly chilled in the water and sucks in air and water. I re-grease my rear u-joint as soon as I got home just to flush it and be sure.
Moral of this story is do not tell the mechanic (or doctor) the previous diagnosis made by others when getting a second opinion. Tell (or better yet show) them the symptoms and see if they come to the same conclusions. Anyone can be wrong and the more perspectives you take on a problem when analyzing it the better.
Wow outstanding investigative work. Attention to detail, that’s why your a professional. Really enjoy every single video. Hope your vacation back home is very enjoyable. Take care my utube friend.
Peter, it is so refreshing to see a true professional at work. I'm a new Tundra Owner (2021) when I need service, I think that I'll make the trip from Las Vegas to California, get a hotel and have you do my service. People ask me, why a Tundra after owning nothing but GM vehicles and trucks? My answer is," it make me smile I drive it".
Hi Peter. Loyal fan and follower. We appreciate your honesty and the help you continue to provide for us the need peasants. LOL. You have save me thousands of dollars in repairs by watching your videos and doing the work myself. Of topic but I have a question for you. I bought a used, one owner 2002 Sequoia with 215k last year. Previous owners said he change all the fluids but I don’t have any records of it. I’m about to go on a 2400 mile road trip in the next few weeks. Should I go ahead and do drain and fill transmission service, differential and transfer case or not? I don’t want to mess something up before the trip since I have no idea if the fluids were ever changed. Thank you in advance and please continue to enlighten us with your experience.
Im not really a truck guy, But I see you have alot of videos on tacomas. Im interested into buying a used toyota truck and getting it in mint condition. Love the videos sir, Thank you so much for educating us!
I also want to add, Yesterday i replaced my timing chain tensioner on my 2012 corolla S and I couldnt have done it properly without you peter. Thanks alot!
I had shudder on my 2007 FJ with 145 thousand miles on it. Would sudder going up hills between 35-45 miles per hour. Had my garage guy change out transmission fluid he did 4 or 5 cycles of drain and fill. Sudder is gone no issues after another 10 thousand miles. USED TOYOTA WS TRANSMISSION FLUID.
Great job diagnosing the problem! I was wondering if he had the transmission oil changed seeing as you said he had the wrong type installed? Thanks for uploading these videos:)
Great diagnostics, nice video. But one thing, BG makes quite good products, so I think your customer can use it until the next ATF oil change. I have BG ATF in my Volvo and it shifts nice with it.😊. Greatings from the Netherlands.
This will trigger all of those that consider aftermarket 'synthetic' transmission fluid as superior to Toyota's OEM fluid. If that's the spec that is called for, why use anything else.
I had (what I thought) was a transmission shudder on my 2014 Camry last year. My shop took a look and found a broken motor mount. Thankfully they knew what it was early on. It felt to me just like a transmission problem and it happened at about 35 mph.
I can somewhat understand the decline of the serviceable u-joint. At the end of the day, if people aren't going to grease serviceable u-joints regularly, they're better off with non-serviceable u-joints. This applies to all suspension components.
Fantastic! You were able to diagnose this so quickly. Some other shop might have charged him for an entirely new transmission. Did you recommend he change all of the fluid out for the correct Toyota fluid?
When the torque converter starts malfunctioning, you may feel shuddering and even slipping in overdrive. You usually notice your car shuddering because it feels like it's vibrating. Your car will vibrate even when you're not going very fast. The shuddering makes the car lag and is very noticeable. As automatic transmissions age, the lockup torque converter's ability to transfer torque smoothly can decline, and additive packages in automatic transmission fluids can deplete, resulting in torque converter clutch (TCC) shudder.
So many buy the BG unit, which is a good system, they want to sell, sell, sell the BG service. They overlooked a bad u-joint in their need to sell their money-maker service. I'm not so sure that aftermarket fluid causes functionality problems. The transmission will be fine. Someone puts the Toyota label on the fluid. Aisin makes great transmissions.
My transmission mount on my 98 4runner is extremely worn. Rubber is all cracked up. The main bolt through the middle is half out and bent..lol. loose. I get vibrations on the highway.
Great bit here Petr, but I have a question my friend. I see you diagnosing vehicles, but not much vids of you doing repairs. Any reason for this? Thx for all you do!
My Toyota service writer says my 2018 Camry is due for a transmission fluid change soon at 60,000 miles. The service writer said the filter is a lifetime filter, they only change the fluid. Anyone else have this come up? I have not called another Toyota dealer yet for a 2nd opinion. Thanks
2010 taco, when you come to a complete stop . Then let off break to continue driving . There a distinct thump . Feels like you just got bump by a car. Any suggestions? Thx
I’d say it needs an inspection of all the suspension bushings, also the brakes to see if disk callipers are loose or drum brake shoes are loose. I imagine the cause will become obvious once a proper inspection is done. Something is worn out or loose.
I have the same thing in my 09. At 180k the lower ball joints were creaking so decided to change balljoints, tie rods and stabilizer links. I didn’t do the bushings cause they are a pain to remove and install without a press. Not too long ago it began thumping and I’m certain it’s those stupid bushings I didn’t replace. Im sitting at 271k right now and it’s not getting any better😂
Check the slip yoke for a grease fitting and put a few (3-4) pumps of grease in it. Sounds like the slip yoke isn't moving freely and is binding up when coming to stop.
I cringed when you stated the customer had the transmission flushed, then cringed some more when you discovered they put the wrong fluid in there.. what a mess.. this reminds me to check my ujoints and grease the nips soon!

Sure wish you lived here in Texas! We could really use a good Toyota mechanic.
Petr, Judging by your location, the shudder is more likely a series of minor earthquakes than a faulty Aisin transmission. 😉
Awesome Job Peter!! You make me wanna check mine on my 2013 Tacoma.
Excellent video, too!
Excellent video - very helpful and educational!

I had a similar issue with my 2nd gen and it was the carrier bearing and a seized needle cap. Great find!
...great diagnosis Peter....would like to see you do the actual replacement of the U-joint....thanks for posting... 🙂
Exactly, good man! You cannot listen to what the customer thinks it is. They always think what they want. But they are not ASE
I have the exact same issue - I'm changing all my U-joints and the carrier bearing as well!
Your awesome buddy, may God Bless you in your daily work.
Another great video. Thank you,
Great info I hope this is what is wrong with our Tacoma!
awesome work peter, wish you were in Ct!
Great info as usual 👍
Great Video
Thanks 😊

That truck was really quiet inside. That engine is purring. Go Toyota!
Excellent troubleshooting Peter! Makes me want to go out and lube my u-joints and driveshaft!
Very good video! 👍👍👍
Great video
Nice diagnosis Peter 😎

Good catch

Thanks Peter, for this interesting video, interesting problem.
GOOD INTEL SIR
Diagnostic rule number one. Look for the easy stuff first.
I got lucky took it to get oil changed and it was missing transmission support bolts
Interesting the 2WD has non-serviceable u-joints. The 4WD Toyotas have serviceable ones, something many lazy mechanics skip.
I can somewhat understand the decline of the serviceable u-joint.
At the end of the day, if people aren't going to grease serviceable u-joints regularly, they're better off with non-serviceable u-joints.

FINE BUSINESS!!! We hear an accent in your English and are trying to guess your ancestory? Where were you born??? CHEERS from Westcoast Canada!
👍👍❤️

Similar happened to mine. Except the needles were ground to red dust…… was really scary when I saw how bad they were….

Install a transmission cooler and change transmission oil every 60k miles, you will never get shudder on any AISIN built transmission.
where is your shop

I am in the Chicagoland area and was wondering how to contact you for work on my Toyota, is there a good email I could reach you by?
Could be a drive axle out of balance, as well, perhaps?
I hope you got him to let you flush the crap fluid for Toyota fluid.
Terrible to turn that into a girl truck with the automatic- but lot's of girls drive those type of trucks.
I cringed when you stated the customer had the transmission flushed, then cringed some more when you discovered they put the wrong fluid in there.. what a mess.. this reminds me to check my ujoints and grease the nips soon!
