While this really is being marketed towards women, in my testing it reduced my split times for follow-up shots by enough that I have begun carrying it personally as well. The lower recoil gives less flip and allows me to achieve a sight picture more quickly. I highly recommend!
As I was listening to them explain, I wondered why this wouldn't be good for ANY shooter. I mean, aren't we going for good performance and low recoil anyway?
brad h - some people are very picky that the penetration depth meets the FBI 12”-18” range. I suppose quick follow up shots and 10”+/- penetration has its validity for choice as well... I’m still considering it in these ammo scarce days ((Covid19 2020). And of my wife wanted 9mm over 380 then this would be a good option for her too. After all, I’ve Sound I don’t like 124 grain +P out of my already snappy P99.
I shot this today with my Springfield Armory Hellcat. It's a snappy pistol with Critical Defense but the Lite was much less snappy. I got smaller groups with the Lite too. Bullet placement matters so I may get another box of the Critical Defense Lite & carry it. 75 rounds & no fails. This is replacing my Federal HST which jammed twice in 50 rounds.
One of the guns in my EDC rotation is my Glock 43. As I’ve gotten older and arthritis has adversely affected my hand strength and resilience, I have found Hornady’s Critical Defense Lite (9mm) to be of immense help. Noticeably less recoil and faster succeeding shots. Fun to shoot! And ballistics tests indicate it is essentially as effective as regular Critical Defense (and most other respected JHP loads) with regard to penetration and expansion. This is a very fine round.
I bought some of this for my S&W 637 and it actually makes it fun to shoot. The water bottles I shot actually were blown up more from the Lite ammo than the regular Critical Defense ammo.
Great video, I'm thankful to say I've shot and known the precision of Hornady for decades. Great to see a video inclusive of men and women involving gun safety. Awesome!
I don’t care if it’s marketed towards women i think it’s great in my micro 9. I wouldn’t run it in my full size pistol really but for smaller pistols it’s a nice option
Don't let the marketing fool you...these result in faster and more accurate followup shots then 115g. Many competitive shooters use 100g for a reason, but if you have a smaller subcompact handgun these are good for edc.
When you buy ammo during the pandemic you buy what's available and find out what it does later. That's why I'm here. Bought this a few months ago and now trying to see what it does.
I tested the 100 gr Lite through my SAR 9 and was constantly getting jammed up. Put the same ammo in a Tarus G2C and had no issues at all. With the regular 9x19 Lugar ammo the SAR 9 has no issues. The Lite is also slightly shorter than the 9x19, but as I said with a smaller pistol it had no issues.
@@nashvilleoutlaw They performed well enough, but I am likely to stick with my normal self defense loads (Speer Gold Dot). I like carrying what our local law enforcement carries for legal reasons. If my wife had a 9mm, I would definitely keep these in stock for her.

I carry Critical Defense in my single action armies as ccw guns. While my snubbies are all 357's I only carry 38+p as I am much more accurate. muzzle blast and flash aren't going to necessarily going to stop a threat, hits on target are. just hope never have to use them for intended purpose. great product for handguns as not easy to conceal a rifle.
I tried out these bullets on my brand new G19 and G26 and it didn't go well. FTE and stove pipe galore. For some reason, my brand new XDS 9MM had no issues with it. I guess I'll try the heavier ones and clean my guns out and try again. FMJ ran fine through all three guns (brass and steel case). My friend right next to me with his brand new G19 had the same exact issues with this bullet (also a G19 generating 4). They are very easy to shoot now (almost as easy as a 22lr)
I carry several self defense CCW guns from time to time, a .38Spl, .380ACP. and 9mmPara. I use Hornady Critical Defense ammo in all of them, I am anxious to try the new light loads.
I can tell you this....they are massively loud if you are in a situation that you cannot use ears. I have shot the 38 plus P and the Lite and the lite is just this ear rumpling crack. As far as expansion and all of that I have no idea on soft targets and that concerns me.
Looks like this test was done with a compact/4” barrel. Wish they would publish results for a subcompact/3+” since that is what’s gonna be more common for purse gun.
Critical defense is already a light recoiling round for 38 special. They're 110 grains as opposed to 125-130 grain hollow points. Way lighter than 158 grains that's for sure
Thanks for building these rounds! I run a mixed stack of rounds, but these are always first because I don't believe that "self-defense" means that I'm supposed to try and make sure that I murder someone if they're having a bad day and experience a lapse in judgement and self-control. Most situations that require deadly weapons (guns) for self-defense are over after the first few shots, and I believe in forgiving and loving your neighbor. God forbid, but someday that might be me making a simple mistake and finding myself as the target of an over-zealous "self-defense" shooter.
@@Sillybilly1b tasers are more lethal than firearms due to the fact they affect the whole body rather than a single point. If it accomplishes the same thing in regards to defensive capability with lower recoil, why would you make anything else? If it doesn't, why would you bring to market something that was sub-par? Do you just make a heavier recoil round for dudes who want to have a junk measuring contest? If a heavier bullet and recoil can punch through tougher materials like car doors and such, do you expect women to never have to take those types of shots? So many questions.
Really want to see how this round and the critical defense 115 grain work out of a 16 inch barrel. I need a round for home personal protection that does not over penetrate & I think one of these are it but can’t find any tests with these memos and a 16 inch 9 mm barrel.
Tommy TwoGun Yeah except this ammo is not designed to pass the FBI tests. This is a low recoil round designed for concealed carry which is totally different than the FBI tests designed for law enforcement.
You really don't need 12 inches to make a round incapacitate or kill a attacker . 8 inches of penetration in gel is normally in most cases enough for self-defense situations. In law enforcement the requirements need different standards for different roles . So in civilian self-defense those should be adequate. Not saying it's the best ,but if that what you can handle then use it .
You aren't in the F.B.I. unless you are??? Agent Mulder is that you? The F.B.I. needs to shoot through various barriers and be able to shoot through one shoulder and hit the heart. That's where that 12 inches came from. It's not some arbitrary number that everybody has to meet or the ammo is useless. It's for their needs. 9 inches is more than enough. A heart is less than 2 inches under the skin.
Problems with Hornady 380 ammo. Bullets not properly crimped. They push back into the case even from being in the magazine of an LCP. I took them apart, and one had no powder! Can’t rely on this stuff if you really need it.
The FBI test requires 12-18 inches of penetration. This penetrated 9 3/4 inches, so it failed. In other words, it does NOT have the same performance as the critical defense line. Why did Hornady post this video? Hornady would probably have better results with this load using a 80 or 65 grain bullet.
To shoot though your heart is 5-6 inches front to back. This’ll work. If you’re a smaller individual, as many women are, you appreciate the lower recoil that will KILL your opponent. Look at the results. A 9mm of any weight is not necessarily a one shot kill. Who shoots an opponent 1 time? Three or five holes even six inches deep is going to leave even a druggie incapable of harming you. Final bought. The FBI isn’t in charge of what we shoot so who gives a hoot except for owls?
