In this episode, I share with you my thoughts on this absolutely ridiculous Mazda RX3. Considered as the Godfather of the rotaries, many of whom regard the RX3 as one of the best cars Mazda had ever made. Most owner's tuck their cars under covers for years to come but this car however, this example is built with purpose in mind. An unbelievable driving machine... I used too have an RX3 coupe 13 b bridgeport some 30 years ago. Cops hated it, i loved it. Now i have a XC Fairmont GXL 351.Nice car too drive. But shit, i still miss that rotary. I even converted a few mates who thought they were buzz boxes.

My 72 RX-3 12A (in 1975) , I could drop the clutch from 3rd to 4th gear at 90 MPH, and it would double-rear-wheel hop back and forth most all the way up to 115 MPH. Stock from the engine change by the factory from a 10A to the 12A.
I never lost a race, even with blown corvettes or a Kawasaki Z-1's... it was the "Space Ship" - like the USS Enterprise going into warp drive - it was the fastest car that has ever existed. The rear wheels would squeal as soon as the RPM's hit 4000 (cross-over to the 2nd set of retarded points) - I'd have to back off of the throttle just to maintain traction as I would rocket-launch by my opponent vette- going 3x the acceleration rate like they were standing still. There was plenty of room left over as it would peg out at 10500 rpm but could never go more than about 115 to 120 as it was so light that the nose angle would make it float up over 115. With ground effects on a calm day, I'm sure it would have done the 160 MPH on the speedo. God I miss that car...

So Sad these cars disappeared in the 90's due to racing and bad weather here also rusted away.
But i wonder why it has big rims? Wouldnt smaller rims be better in terms of unsprung mass and also acceleration and body roll?

I had 1980 Datsun 1200 Ute with 12A Rotary, with manual Gearbox.
When the engine blew up I Managed to source a 12A with Automatic 3 Speed, boy it did'nt have any Lag at all at Port Botany during 1980's before the authorities put Speed Humps. It sure did give the V8's a run for their money as it looked like a slapped.

How do you keep the seals from going? Mine went through seals all the time in the end I couldn't afford the replacements.. This ones 5 times more powerful than mine how the hell does he keep the seals intact.? Is there tougher seals you can buy?

@@POLITICALYCORRECTify there are ceramic seals available ..can stand up to high rpm amd high boost,but I modified my OMP as I discredit pre mixing,I rather run a modified OMP using separate resovoir full of specific grade oil(light ) to keep apex seal edge contaminate free unlike the some of the crap the omp can pick up from the oil gallery and decrease seal life
@@nealefrazer4247 ok thanks damn I went through 4 sets of seals in two years on my 13b bastards didn't even tell me bout ceramics. Probably coz I was dumb enough to keep replacing n they were making $1500 off me each time dodgy buggers. Not many places work on Rotary's anymore only 1 left in Melbourne sadly..
@@POLITICALYCORRECTify 1500 is good price for factory seals..try 3k for the very best Japanese ceramics on the market today,but longivity an the gentle touch on the inonel lining on the housings is a blessing ..
It's a great car but please remember it has a later model RX-7 13B engine with a turbo. It would not perform or have 600hp if it didn't have the engine upgrade. So you really can't say it's a 45 yr old car when the one of the main parts of the cars age the engine has been upgrade to a later model RX-7 FD engine.

Love the rig but id prefer a Cosmo 13B but the FDs are still insane. I own a 10A Rx3 Cosmo swapped GTX45 powered by a Jatco gearbox capable of 8 second passes 👍😎👏

That's awsome, a lot of my friends had rotary Mazdas back in the day ( mid to late 80's early 90's)
I very fortunate to still be around 12a,13b RE motors & old school jdm rides for nearly 30 years & still way more fun to build & drive than anything else, nothing comes close at all..
Well, 13b is not the ultimate. There is a 3 Rotor 20b and someone did a 6 rotor. So do your research.

I prefer THE rx4 74, i hade a 929 THE coupé with THE ordinärt engine in THE Early 90s.
And standard rx4 hade a better engine than THE smaller rx3.
I used to have a RX2 with a 13B engine. Stock standard and it went like stink.

How do you make a rotary so powerful without destroying the seals? Is there tougher seals you can get coz my rx7 went through 4 seals then I gave up. Now I regret losing that beautiful car so much. It's value now is ten times more than when I got rid of it..
As a previous owner of 2 rotaries, it saddens me to say that i wouldn't buy another one, and now that Mazda has practically ZERO interest in rotaries, the prices people are asking for them these days, simply are not worth anywhere near that...
