- TalkTV's Julia Hartley-Brewer clashes with Reform UK’s Ben Habib over how the party would stop illegal migration.
Rishi Sunak said “nothing will stand in our way” of getting flights to Rwanda off the ground, as the Government braced itself for legal challenges to the scheme to send asylum seekers to the east African country.
The Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration Bill) cleared Parliament shortly after midnight after peers backed down, ending resistance to the scheme.
The Prime Minister hopes the Rwanda scheme will deter migrants from seeking to cross the English Channel, but on Tuesday morning a small boat was seen leaving the Calais shoreline with French police looking on.
Julia: “Are you genuinely saying the policy is ‘we will let people drown to make a point’?”
Ben: “Let’s not infantilise these people!”

If the people jump into the water in French waters, then it's France's responsibility to rescue them.

His assessment of most of it was decent but he couldn't answer the most important point. How do you stop the boats? No British Navy ship is going to sit and watch as people drown it goes against their very nature as seamen. The Navy can't legally enter French waters so no way of taking them back to France.

I'm with Ben on this, and frankly Julia stretches the argument to bizarre lengths. Stop paying France, and tell them any boats leaving their shores will be returned. Yes, save people mid-channel, but having saved them, return them to France not England. And never forget, these boats are just a distraction for the 750,000 last year that came 'legally' via airports. My town centre is now unrecognisable from just 5 years ago and I really fear what this country will look like when my children are my age.

I think the thing that she is trying to point out is that just saying 'stop the boats' isn't a plan. We all know that the Royal Navy/Border Force are never going to leave people to drowned. We can't force people to turn around. His plan of giving them a boat that they can't damage is laughable, you'd have just given them something even more sea worthy. Reform do not have a plan for what they'd actually do at the border, that isn't their fault, it is just the nature of the problem. It's easy for them to criticise when they aren't in office.

Also when the French navy offered help to an overloaded dinghy, the occupants refused saying they wanted to go to England.
Just turn the boats around or put the occupants on the next ferry under armed guard. Maybe they'll try to sink the ferry. Whatever happens it'll cost the UK.
