We need to be sensible with all materials we use. But great to see china is totally going EV.

  • @TaranAadarsh
    @TaranAadarsh 19 днів тому +79

The whole situation with the Chinese EVs and stuff kind of annoys me. Not because China's supposed to be bad or anything like that. It's just that most of the rest of the world feels like it doesn't even want to catch up to the Chinese brands...
Some companies are working towards it, but so many are just so stubborn and stuck that they don't want to do anything to actually improve. They just keep forcing ICE vehicles and going back on EV plans...
I just find it annoying that most companies around the world aren't really willing to provide such cool cars. And after so much talk of becoming less dependent on China and whatnot, we're back to depending on them if we want an actually cool car that doesn't cost an arm, a leg and a brother or something...

    • @ericawong2135

Totally understandable and reasonable comment. What if I told you that the legacy automakers have all acknowledged that they CANNOT beat China in EVs and that they know it's too late. If you accept that as a fact, what should they do now? Does that better explain why they're doing what they're doing?
Some recent articles to consider, "Ford Chairman admits US can't compete with China on EVs", "China’s EV competition is so fierce that Volkswagen ‘cannot keep up’", "Elon Musk Warns That Chinese Automakers Will “Demolish” Western Rivals Unless Trade Barriers Are Established".
A Goldman Sachs analyst wrote recently (sorry can't find the article) that all legacy automaker CEOs have realised that they cannot compete with China.
The most obvious immediate solution is to put up barriers to entry in domestic markets as the USA has done and as the EU is contemplating. The other is to put out propaganda to confuse the consumer as the US and Japan are presently doing.

@@ericawong2135 that's an interesting view, but I believe the matter is quite more complicated than it appears. Legacy car makers are not exactly doing nothing. Many of them, having realized it's too late to catch up with China, are signing deals to cooperate with Chinese EV automakers. This will allow them to produce legacy brands cars based on Chinese EV platforms.
There is also another major thing to consider: EV charging infrastructure. This is a responsibility of Countries' governments. If a Country has an underdeveloped chargers' network, how can EVs be expected to sell well? Why should legacy carmakers invest their billions on EVs that they can't sell properly because the infrastructure is not there yet? In this regard China did a great job preparing a decent charging infrastructure, making it actually convenient for people to own an EV.

Living in China I've seen a transformation in those 5 years that took Hyundai 25 years. And today I see the same scale of transformation happening again. Fast forward a dozen years, BYD has literally turned into the 900 lb gorilla of the EV world, and GAC Aion and SAIC-MG are now huge hitters in the EV market. Even JAC is doing okay, if not as good as the other 3. That JAC T9 Hunter certainly looks pretty nice.

Yes, and no... currently world-wide production isn't enough to meet demand (which is why world-wide EV sales are continuing to grow healthily). Thus, if Chinese EVs aren't sold in the US, they'll be sold in other countries - and offset the same number of vehicles (and given the low average milage of 'merkins, probably offset more emissions)...
Thus in terms of impact on emissions in the short term, it's pretty minimal. However, if EV production doesn't take off in the US in the next 3-4 years then it will start to become an issue - and fast.

There isn’t a climate crisis, that’s just bad science which has been massively overhyped for money. And I’d there was, and if tiny amounts of CO2 made any difference, EVs wouldn’t be a solution.

I really like a lot of these Chinese EV's. That Smart, or several small 2--door fun or cabrio EV's.
For those huge 7 seat behemoth EV's, I see little use. Specially for over 60% of the world population. . . . the 1 or 2 person households.
When you have 4 kids, a dog and a canary, yes. For the masses, no.
And, as cheap as they are in China, the prices are often more than double when they sell them in the EU. Around €30.000 and up, is the standard.
All these promises for affordable Chinese EV's with at least a decent 300km range, for the masses are still fake stories.
Except for the EU build Citroën ëC3 EV. That indeed starts below €25.000. We bought one this week.
So China . . . . and Tesla . . . .you are all to late with your bla bla about a €25k affordable EV.
