  • An overnight hike in the rainforest of Mount Superbus, the highest mountain peak in South East Queensland. Overnight camping at the Superbus South campsite and a morning visit to the Lincoln Bomber plane wreck before returning home.
    In the early hours of April 9, 1955 an RAAF Avro Lincoln Bomber crashed into the side of South East Queensland’s highest mountain. The plane was en route from Townsville to Brisbane transporting a sick baby when it crashed into the side of Mt Superbus and exploded. Tragically, all 6 people on board were killed. More than 60 years later, the southern peak of Mount Superbus still bears the scars of this tragedy.
    Shot with the Sony A7C (16-35mm F2.8 GM) and DJI Mavic Air 2.

    I have hiked up there 3 times in my 20's. Is a very medium walk, and once when I was 12 years old. Not difficult. A few places like walking up steep stairs. I first hiked there in the late 1970's as part of a boy scout group. For reasons unknown, we brought down a bunch of pieces of the plane wreck, including the main Pilot seat and instrument panels. Of the pilot seat, on the aluminium was the unmistakable stains of the burnt flesh of the pilot.

    • @AaronGrayOutdoors
      @AaronGrayOutdoors  5 місяців тому

      Thanks! I have been up there a few times now, it is a fantastic location. I am certainly amazed at how much of the plane wreckage still exists up there, given that some of it has been brought down. That pilot seat would have been disgusting.

      Thanks heaps!! Between Mt Superbus and the Superbus-South campsite the track was a little vague in places. I maybe lost it twice but was fairly easy to pick back up. To Mt Superbus is a piece of cake. I hope that helps 👍

    We were just up there the weekend before with the kids to do Lizard and Steamers. Great part of south east Queensland. Did you get stung by any gympie gympie? There is so much of it in the burned out areas.

    • @AaronGrayOutdoors
      @AaronGrayOutdoors  3 роки тому

      Love it up there. Lizard Point is amazing too. Yeah, got a little sting on my hand whilst setting up a camera shot, but I am pretty used to gympie stings by now. The gympie overgrowth on Superbus is still pretty tame compared to some other areas on the Main Range. We found some massive gympie forests around Mt Huntley that were almost impenetrable whilst attempting the Main Range traverse a few weeks ago.

    Great video mate, subscribed! I’m planning on doing this hike soon. Can I ask where you parked and started your hike from? Did it take long to reach the designated campsite? I understand there’s more than one route. Did you use a certain map app? I’ve been looking at a couple of options. I’ve read about the pink ribbons on the trail. Thanks for uploading this, keep up the good work! Swagging With Ben.

    • @AaronGrayOutdoors
      @AaronGrayOutdoors  3 роки тому +2

      Cheers! Appreciate that. I started the hike at Teviot Gap (from Bretts Road) which is generally the best access route with an overnight pack. From there you climb directly up to the top of Superbus via the shoulder following a very obvious and worn trail. From Superbus North to the campsite at Superbus South the trail is a lot more vague and a GPX is recommended. Allow at least 4 hours to reach the campsite from your vehicle (2 hours to Superbus North - 1.5 hours to Superbus South). I use Gaia GPS for navigation. I hope that helps 👍

      There is a rough pad and the entire route is taped. Navigation experience is recommended though!
