Hiking the Western Arthurs Traverse - Tasmania's most spectacular and arduous trail

- Hiking the Western Arthurs Traverse from Alpha Moraine to Kappa Moraine in South West Tasmania. The Western Arthur Range is well known for its challenging and arduous terrain, amazing views and spectacular mountain peaks. I spent a week hiking the Western Arthurs range, passing through Lake Oberon and climbing numerous abels and mountains in the area including Mount Hayes, Mount Sirius, Mount Orion, Mount Alderberan and Mount Scorpio.
On one of the nights, we experienced a brocken spectre from a knoll just outside of Lake Sirona - an amazing but rare optical phenomenon.
The Western Arthurs is the best wildness hike I have experienced yet!

Aaron!! Mate!! Sensational video!! Beautifully shot and put together!! What an absolutely amazing adventure in incredible country!!! So jealous!!! Love it!!
Thanks bud! Really appreciate the great feedback. Tasmania is pretty incredible; it is so different to mainland Australia. Cheers 👍
Great video Aaron.
It brought back fond memories of when I did it in 1987. I rate it as my best hike ever (that includes all the Great Walks in NZ) because of the duration, remoteness, difficulty and spectacular scenery.
There were no duckboards and tent platforms back then. I don't recall the tracks being anywhere near as distinctive when I did it.
Like you, we had great weather. We carried 14 days of food to allow for bad weather, which we didn't get, so we had to make a decision: to walk out early or stay for the full 14 days. We chose the latter, camping at each site for 2 nights.
There was no such thing as lightweight gear back then. I carried 34 kg and I only weighed 66 kg back then.
Thanks David! It’d have to also be the best hike I’ve done to date. I can imagine it was much tougher back in 1987- not only due to the tracks but the gear loads. I think my load would have been in the 16kg area. I can’t even imagine carrying 34kg 🤣. Hoping to get onto the Eastern Arthurs next year!
loved it. magical views. thanks
Thanks. I am glad you enjoyed it, cheers.
Breathtaking Aaron, thanks mate for sharing nature's best.

Thanks mate, appreciate it! Hope you are enjoying your time in Norway.
Insanely beautiful memories mate. So jealous!
Thanks! We had a fantastic time up there 😄
You captured the traverse so well, really took me back on some amazing memories. Great video ⛰️🤙
Thanks! Appreciate that 👌. What month did you do it in? We did it back in early March.
@@AaronGrayOutdoors pretty sure we did it early April. We have the luxury of time on our hands so we waited for the best weather window!
Leaving for Hobart today... Absolutely pumped yet nervous. Thanks for sharing your experience
Amazing. It’s a fantastic walk, enjoy!
@@AaronGrayOutdoors Can confirm - torturously beautiful. Hardest thing I've ever done. Seeing Oberon coming up from Square Lake was unreal
Awesome video for our wonderful hike. Thank you Aaron.
Thanks Ling. It was a fantastic hike!
@@AaronGrayOutdoors Warched the video again, I am so going to do it again next February or March!
Thanks Ling! I would love to do it again one day but might wait for the full traverse to reopen first.
nice video and welcome to van diemens land 👍🍺😎
Thanks mate! Love myself a bit of Tassie!
Awesome mate esp at 12:30 awesome shot...welcome to my backyard.....that pose on top of the peaks I think someone uses them as there thumbnail 😉👍😎🍻 good video chill music....
Thanks bud! It was such an unreal hike. Heading back in Dec/Jan to tackle the Southern Ranges!
Hi Aaron, I've been really impressed with your videos of Girraween. And now you have done videos of some great hikes in Tassie. This video is so much better than the garbage photos I took when I last trekked Western Arthurs. I hope you get some more footage, the view from Mt Ann summit would be great to see, and Frenchman's Cap is amazing too. Keep up the excellent work.
Hey Chris, appreciate that thanks! I have another video of the Tyndalls Range in Tasmania coming soon.
Unfortunately I probably won’t get another chance for another Tassie trip until the end of the year. Mt Anne circuit is definitely high up on the list, as is the Southern Ranges (Precipitous Bluff).
Cheers for the feedback 👍
@@AaronGrayOutdoors Oooh PB! I remember getting blown off that in 100km/hr winds back in high school. The Scaparia is murder. Keep up the great work.
Got to the end and recognised Jess and realised you did it with her. Very jealous of your trip! One day I'll get there!
Thanks Kate. It's an incredible trip! Haha, yep Jess was part of our party :)
Nice to see another Slingfin out there. Have done the WAT twice in a Portal.
Nice! It’s a brilliant tent. Haven’t seen anyone else in Australia using one yet, but definitely glad to hear there is another. Cheers 👍
Done well mate seen the same scenery in weather done well 😊🤠
Cheers! Thanks.
@@AaronGrayOutdoors I'm yet to do it...my mate done it before I done cradle....I stay away from high spots ATM
Hi Aaron, great video! I think you met a group of us who were doing Teviot to Spicer’s recently (2/9/23) when we were on Panorama Pt having lunch. Was that you? Some of us are planning to do the WAT in Jan. How does it compare to Teviot to Spicers (more technical I know and high chance of bad weather)? Apart from overnighters up Barney (maybe via Logan’s) are there other things we could do in SE Qld to prepare?
Thanks! Yep, that was me. Awesome, I hope you get good weather! Whilst it has technical climbing there’s a well defined footpad / cairned route the entire way. There’s also plenty of water which certainly helps. Yeah, probably Barney. Have fun out there!
I thought I recognised you. Thanks for your reply. And good to know the trail is well-worn. Thanks again for the great video. I hope we can be just as lucky with the weather!
Arron, sensational, a billionaire of life, money and possessions trail far far behind. Good work. Cheers.
Thank you so much! Appreciate it 😊
Very nice. We were one day ahead of you. :)
Oh haha! I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. We really couldn’t have asked for a better weather window. Thanks!
What are the things you are wearing on your ankles for?
They are gaiters. They protect your legs from scrub and mud and offer additional protection against snakes.
@@AaronGrayOutdoors Gotcha. Are snakes pretty prevalent in this area?
They are around but we didn’t see any. As with most hikes in Tasmania, gaiters are generally recommended.
@@AaronGrayOutdoors Cool. Would you say more so because of the snakes they are recommended or just because of the shrubbery?
Mud and shrubbery is there main purpose. I hope that helps!
