Good to see someone still does things the easy way with a hub tamer
Friebe1000 The plate & bolts? Only works on non abs vehicles. =(
I enjoy watching you work Thomas. You always make it look easy.
Haha... it's the editing and the "simple" stuff that I record. You don't want to see what I don't record!!!
Thomas EXOVCDS Yeah you always say that but I got to believe there is a lot of skill involved!
cool plate. My VR6 has the bonded in axles, they don't budge. Not looking forward to having to do the bearings one day
that's a nice plate look into getting one of them the hockey stick is a great bit of kit nice vid mate
Thank you!
Bearing installation video / link is in the description.... for a mk4 VW (same procedure for the mk3 / A3 in this video). Hub removal options link is also in the description.
Thomas EXOVCDS Those are a real pain if you factor in rust (NY resident here). Both the snap ring and wheel bearing were bonded to the steering knuckle. I'm soaking the parts now in Acetone/ATF. Here's hoping the bearing comes out because the puller isn't working at all. Hydraulic press time?
Brent Adriance Yup... sometimes we need the hydraulic press as well.
I wonder if you could make a tool similar to the one from schley to press out the bearings? Maybe 2 very large sockets and a heavy duty nut and bolt to go through the center.
There are other "similar" tools... image search for wheel bearing puller. The other video (listed in the description) has links to such pullers in its description.
I don't recall you using that plate to pull the hub off and that looked a lot nicer than using a slide hammer. The bearing looked like it was really in there, but as always you make it look easy. And what's going on with the jack hammer guy; it looks like he's two-timing by having two girl friends :)
+stuzman I use the plate when there's no abs ring. On the next generation A4 /mk4's you can't use that plate.
The older I get the more I hate friggin' snap rings. The last one I worked on (A/C compressor clutch) was just a royal bitch that I couldn't find the right pliers for. IMO, the market for snap ring pliers sucks! (ranting...) Thanks Thomas, you yanked those two rings right out of there! = pro
When installing the bearing, it is pulled against the snap ring... it took me a while to realize that the bearing moves slightly away from the snap ring when hammering against the snap-ring. After that, the pliers work well, but still use a screwdriver to lift it out of the groove. =)
Wow serious hammer time with dancing girls !
Party time!
I like that way better than a slide hammer . 👍👍
It's gentle!
What was that little plate you hammered in before removing the snap rings?
It was just a puller plate of the right size.... by hammering against the spring, the bearing moves slightly, which frees-up the snap-ring.
I do a lot of bearings thats a good tip. I learn something almost every video you put up thanks Thomas
I'm curious why you separated the ball joint at the stud, rather than the three bolts that hold the base in! Alignment concerns? Personal preference? Part of a larger scheme to take over the planet? :D
rhkips Yeah... less worry about alignment.
Fair enough! That tiny little bit of play in those bolt holes can tweak the toe just enough to create a pull to one side. ...Not that I know that from personal experience or anything! ;)
Thinking about replacing my mk3 jetta tdi without abs front driver side wheel bearing to save myself some $$ and it’s finally getting nicer out so i can work on it haha. any special tools needed? just curious.
I'm pretty sure all tools are shown in the video.
1994 VW Jetta?
I think it was 96 or 97. 1994 is close enough! =)
I bet those girls twerk during installation. 😂😂🍻
Guess we will never know! LOL
😉
Cheater :) We , the humble people, take it down into a hydraulic press :)
In some cases... our press also gets used!
