the sony vx family is (still) famous with skaters because of many reasons but the main ones of the top of my head would be: 1. the handle on the top is great for using with a fisheye to get a low angle clip 2. the microphone (especially on the vx1000) sounds amazing for skateboarding, something about the crunch the wheels make on the concrete is just so satisfying 3. the 3ccd sensor makes the footage look phenomenal, nothing you can edit with a normal clip will top the classic vx and its colors, saturation, hues, white balance, sharpness, etc
I still use my Sony VX-2100 on a regular basis, basically identical to the PD-150, but without the XLR inputs. The original battery will lasts months before I have to charge it, it amazes me.
These a very nice, great quality camcorders. I have the follow-up model, the DSR-PD170 (based on the VX2100) in my collection. Equipped with a 16 MB Memory Stick for those great VGA photos :D

Wow it even has licensed Faroudja video processing. Remarkable that the tape drawer still accepts/elevates/ejects a cassette after all these years. Fixed by jumpering the motor back and forth a few (20 ) times with 1.5 volts and reset micro.
I just received this camera -unfortunately in a bad shape. I came across your video, that helped me a lot and found the manual online. I have therefore a question about the tapes: According to the manual: "You can record both on mini DVCAM cassettes and on Mini DV cassettes using your camcorder. When you use a mini DV cassette, set REC MODE to DV SP in the menu settings..." and later: "If you record in the DV format, the transition of a tape may not be smooth. We recommend that you use mini DVCAM cassettes and set REC MODE to DVCAM in the menu settings to obtain reliable clear pictures." To make things clearer I can record in both DVCAM format and in the DV format (SP mode) never mix the different formats in the same tape, preferably use Mini DV (cassettes) when recording in DV Format/SP Mode and Mini DVCAM cassettes when recording in DVCam Format, right? What would happen if I use a regular mini DV and record in DVCam Format? And where can I get these professional mini DVCam cassettes? Greetings from Sweden!
There's no consequence to recording in DVCAM mode on MiniDV cassettes. Most of my cassettes are MiniDV, and I record exclusively in DVCAM mode. It will yield better reliability on both types of cassettes. The manual probably says that just so you keep track of your recordings and don't accidently try to play a DVCAM recording in a MiniDV device by looking only at the tape type. DV has been obsolete for years - I don't know if anyone is even making tapes still. eBay is probably your best bet.

4:38 If you kept having problems with drop-outs on MiniDV, HDV will be even worse for you. Since it records in MPEG2, a drop-out will not only make loose a frame or two, it will corrupt a whole GOP (group of pictures), that's around 10 frames! 5:17 You are mixing up DVCAM and DVCPRO. S, M and L size cassettes are part of the DVCPRO system which was Panasonic's DV-based professional system. Sony's DVCAM only had the small and large cassettes that were the same as MiniDV and fullsize DV (these large DV cassettes were also available on the consumer market. They are not compatible with DVCPRO L size). 7:04 CCDs are no longer used in any modern camera aside from some special applications. All modern camcorders since around 2010 use CMOS sensors. They are indeed cheaper to make, but they also have a different readout method, which has the advantage that bright lights no longer cause a vertical streak across the picture - and the disadvantage of rolling shutter. Still a Bayer filter is required, so there are still 3CMOS systems for better colour reproduction. 9:47 Indeed there is full resolution colour information - until it's recorded. Being based on DV, DVCAM applies a method called colour subsampling. 4:1:1 for NTSC and 4:2:0 for PAL. This means for each pixel only certain colour information is recorded. The chroma resolution on DV is always lower than the luma resolution (that's why chroma keying always looks so bad on DV). This by the way is one of the things that makes Digital Betacam so much better than DV: It not only records digital component rather than digital composite, it also applies only 4:2:2 colour subsampling (4:4:4 would be no colour subsampling, HDCAM SR can do that). 10:14 Broadcast quality it is - but only for ENG work. In the studio you would always use a higher quality recording system such as Digital Betacam (Sony) or Digital-S (JVC). 16:08 All you have to do to make the camcorder accept a dynamic microphone instead of a condenser microphone is turn off phantom power (+48V). 22:58 Sony still makes InfoLithium L size batteries as a lot of their current professional camcorders still use them. And these days there are so many no-name accessories such as video lights that also use them. I think it's safe to say, InfoLithium L will be available for decades to come.
@@DrCassette I have an adapter coming in the mail, so in the meantime I just connected it to the positive and ground pins for testing. That would be nice if that's all that's the problem. The microphone is functional, but you have to yell at it to register on the level meter at all.

Yep. OBS doesn't support DV cameras unfortunately, but if you use a DV-to-SDI converter and an SDI capture device like an AJA U-TAP, it will work. A cheaper but lower quality method may be to use a composite capture device like those sold by Elgato.

Awesome win! I have the PD170 myself.. ua-cam.com/video/SJPLUYTmpkA/v-deo.html Funny you say about DVCAM having less dropouts as for me both the PD170 and PD100 (I had that's given up now) have had way more problems with break ups. Funny enough its also the DVCAM tapes I most have problems with! My PD100 only liked normal DV Sony tapes and recorded fine on them.. but when I tried Sony DVCAM tapes I had break ups! So strange.. I guess though as you said most people used normal DV tapes to be cheaper and maybe after years of them the cameras just don't like change. Good thing about your camera and mine the PD170 can record in both modes where the PD100 could only record DVCAM mode. As for sound yes my PD170 auto mode is very low sound and also its shotgun so its doing a good job of getting the sound in front of you not behind, I might try the flipping the mic backwards to hear me better for UA-cam recordings. As you said in the video the low light is great.. I have recorded a thunderstorm on mine and was amazed how good the low light is, its better than a lot of much more modern units.
I have found that mounting the microphone backwards, pointing towards me, yields way better audio for UA-cam purposes.

Funny you say about DVCAM having less dropouts as for me both the PD170 and PD100 (I had that's given up now) have had way more problems with break ups.

The filters themselves appear brown in color. At least, all of the gels and lens filters I've seen do.

Telling you, the noise performance is insane.
